It's just yet another case of global collective consciousness slowly but surely tackling yet another old dream of many gamers and devs at the same time now.

Remember how people used to describe about their dream deep-sea games years ago? And then we suddenly got a handful of sea-exploration themed games.
Same thing's going on now, but this time it's the already ages old case of people getting tired of fake "8-bit pixel art" graphics, and demanding retro style 32 and 64-bit graphics instead.

Yeah, I have a feeling that the hardware limitations of older systems actually caused the artists to produce aesthetics that we simply don't see any more.

Ocarina of Time, for example, is constantly criticized for not aging well, but we have to remember that the art was not designed to be viewed above a 240p resolution, with outdated texture filtering, and odd dithering to help with transparency. The ports to newer systems ironically make the game look worse IMO, because it's rendering the game at higher-resolutions, using modern rendering techniques.

Yes, technological limitations, primitive development tools, and even the primitive display technology + connections of the era did greatly affect how the games were designed AND ended up looking for the end-consumer.

I personally think OoT's aged damn fine. Partly thanks to its not-so-realistic, borderline anime looks.
I have, however, noticed that the game loses quite a bit of its color-depth when played above 240p. As if its gamma would go up or something.

Exactly.
People were outraged when Kojima Productions was shut down and their IP kept as an hostage. But nobody even batted an eye a decade earlier, when TS experienced the same fate.

It's even sadder knowing that many ex-TS people found shelter from the Kojima Productions soon after their disbanding.

Yeah, Hulett was a cunt, and unfortunately he managed to spawn a lot of crazy followers for himself, many of whom worked on the western SH titles. It is VERY worrysome when the directors, producers and writers of the new games spew out shit like "I didn't really like SH1, because 2bh, I didn't get it. That cult and demons shit is sooo boring, man!", all while trying to convince people that they're now "taking the series back to its roots!" with their yet another SH: The Movie - The Game release.

>I can't remember the details from Team Silent but I guess it was more of a "that's a shame" and the team just moved on in silence
That's because there was no details given. No big press conferences. Not even a notice to fans. All the sudden, TS was just not making games any more, and a bit later some bits and pieces about what had happened started leaking to the press via 2nd hand personnel.

In a hindsight, the break-up wasn't that surprising. Konami practically HATED Team-Silent and SH. The team was considered to consist of the studio's B-tier artists and coders, and they were only given a task of creating a blatant competitor for the megahit of the day, Resident Evil.
Thank god the team quietly rebelled and made something a bit more original and spooky instead, even sacrificing their own free time and health to deliver the first games.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

>Protips

-Never play below Normal difficulty.
-Replaying them all is recommended.

>Lowpoly flat textures is so lazy and ugly.
I disagree to an extent, but I guess it depends on how it's done. Indie devs could really benefit from a low detail style that isn't explicitly retro, otherwise they have to deal with the problem of creating TONS of "content" to make the world feel coherent.

It's kind of the same idea behind hand-drawn animation -- backgrounds have lots of detail because you only need to draw them once, but some elements, like characters, have low detail. If animators didn't do that, they'd spend their whole lives animating a small number of shots.

Older games didn't have this problem, since you maxed out the system before ever approaching your artists' content creation limitations. It's all about being economical.

But that's true to everything. People grew up with superhero movies, grew up in the industry and can now do their own superhero movies. At the same time, we have people who never saw or care for superhero movies and yet they're making it cause its where the money is.

Not very.
It rather relies on the flattering comparison to RE when people look at screenshots, but the gameplay is basic and very unengaging, imagine Resident Evil where you can do everything correctly but still get fucked, and lacking any care or intention in layout or enemy and item placement, coupled with even worse writing.

Darkness and noise filter hiding flaws
Using PS2 to the full on environments.
Focus on what people tend to notice the most (faces) on character models.

Look at the image, at first it looks amazing, even modern. Then you start to scruitinize it a bit more and see that well, actually, some textures look PS2 tier.
>>
>>388877309

Bunny hopping is fun as fuck you faggot. I don't think people realize but jumping is the most fun mechanic in gaming, full stop. Doesn't matter what game, jumping is always the greatest mechanic. The better and more complex and involved your jumping mechanics are and the more control the player has over the jumps, the better the game is.

Every game is better off with the inclusion of jumping, every game that has gimped jumping has been worse off because of it.
>>
>>388877309
it's a matter of preference really. Some people (myself included) like the feeling of shooting fast and moving fast. It's perfectly fine if tha'ts not your thing, I'm sure you can still enjoy the game without having to learn any of that stuff. You can chill out, my guy. There are enough games out now a days to cater to everyone's specific tastes. You do you, and let me do me.

Addendum:
>Why design your game to purposefully be broken like old games?

This is actually a really good question. Honestly, even if I wasn't into bunny hopping I love it when a dev takes an idea (whether that be something of the original dev's design or something the community cooked up) that was only partially touched upon and then fully elaborates on the concept. You know, really explore what can be done with the idea if it was given free reign. Sometimes this experiment doesn't work, sometimes it does. Either way it's useful data, and I respect devs passionate enough to try out these niche risks

I noted on release that MGS:TS looks like a dentist's office. It's mostly the bland texturing. Everything looks smooth, plastic and lacking grit. MGS looks downright dirty and poorly maintained. Without knowing differently, I would assume that TS is set in some futuristic ship and everything is made out of some techno-plastic polymer. MGS2 had a similar issue, but it was mostly set in Big Shell, which was a nice new mostly metal/plastic building and Arsenal Gear which really was a futuristic techno-base.

I do like the character models more though. They seem pretty accurate. They probably spent the most time on those.

No, it's not the same as quake 1. I wouldn't have fucking typed what I typed if it were the same. Why does every dumb fucking kid here always have something stupid to add?

Quake1 is designed for unfiltered textures
Quake2 is designed for bilinear filtered textures, look at shit like the fucking hand and weapon textures. they are DESIGNED TO BE BLURRED.
>>
>>388893225
The game was is full of non power of 2 textures which would get resized in openGL and degrade visual quality. Half-Life and Quake 1 are the same way so it's clear that "designed" with texture filtering means jack shit.
>>
>>388895537

doesnt make a difference

hl: designed for filtering
quake2: designed for filtering
quake: released before a bilinear filtering consumer level card was available on the market

stretched textures is an infinitely smaller concern than broken looking weapon models etc which are expected to be filtered by the visual designer

The fun thing about Legends is that it predates games like Ocarina of Time by almost a year, and yet it had things such as specifically-drawn facial expressions for specific scenes and angles. Mostly notable with Tiesel. Combine that with simple textures for a fake cel-shading look to nail the anime aesthetic. They really used the tech to their advantage for what was a relatively early PS1 game that flew under the radar.

maybe argue this against somebody who wasn't there and didn't own a rendition verite and voodoo 1. Everyone wanted to get away from linear textures as much as we possibly could. in historical perspective, it was a bad move for Quake, but for every other game it improved how they look.

the weapon models are *clearly* not designed for unfiltered because they look worse than quake1's when unfiltered.

but by that definition tf2 would be the better game because it still does have bunny hopping it is just much harder to pull off and therefore "more complex and involved". you also have jump crouching which makes maneuvering even more complex (which quake for sure didn't have), and many different character options to manipulate your vertical movement such as the boston basher for scout, the detonator for pyro, even the wrangler for the engineer

That is not low-poly at all, the trees alone have way too many polys. The REAL problem with calling it low-poly is that we have no real limitations on textures so the painted texture will actually look painted and not pixelated.

>Are the latest patches for the PC version better than original PS2 now?
Depends on your milage, and I'd remind you that MOST criticism towards the PC ports is always aimed at the SH2, which has had the most issues (on modern machines). SH3's PC port is perhaps one of THE best PC ports ever, and its "fixes" are quite secondary when it comes to overall experience.

The modern fan-fixes are piss easy to apply and remedy majority of these complaints instantly. Not only are the PC versions way easier to run on any PC-like entity made in the past 15 years, something that cannot be said of PS2 emulation, but you can literally crank them up to 8K resolutions if your machine's beefy.

The PC ports have per-pixel dynamic lighting, in contrast to the blocky per-vertex lighting on PS2, which is especially noticeable via the flashlight's beam. SH2's PC version does NOT however have the "soft shadows" PS2 has, but if you can live with Doom3 / FEAR -style "hard and clear" dynamic shadows, the PC port of #2 won't disappoint.
The fog has been a major concern of many in recent years, but the "new" Fog Fix lets you crank up the thickness of fog even ABOVE that of PS2 version. Not that the difference was really THAT noticeable in the first place, unless you literally compared them side-by-side, not to mention majority of the game takes place in dark indoor areas.

Then there's the sound and the recent fad of claiming that it'd be awfully low quality (in SH2) compared to PS2 original. True, the audio IS more compressed. However, the difference is mostly negligible, and again near impossible to tell apart unless you're comparing them side-by-side, on 1:1 the same audio settings and devices.
One thing the PC port also has over the PS2 version is the capability of allowing the users to mod-in higher quality AND 16:9 optimized CG FMVs. Not necessarily a huge difference, but something pixel-hunters may appreciate.

t: oldfag SH-fan with both the PC and PS2 versions.

...Adding on to this, that IF you however do have a legit PS2, the games, and a good CRT television with stereo speakers, playing the PS2 originals will give you the the most authentic, original experience. You don't really "miss" anything, unless you're such a graphics whore who cannot handle early 00s 480p visuals anymore. Obviously, setting up PS2 and its games is way easier too, if your hardware works.

Personally, I started yet another replay of SH2 just weeks ago, this time digging out my old PS2 slim, and plugged it into my livingroom's 40" 1080p LED TV. And I must say, I was pleasantly surprised how damn GOOD these games still look this very day, in their original form. I'm extra glad that my TV has a fine, deep black levels, as that's something the CRTs used to have over the flat screens for years.

>>
I have probably only played a handful of games in this thread but looking at late 90s early 2000s pc games just gets me so nostalgic. I love how n64 games look, they have a certain grit or feeling of floating in empty space to them that really enhances the atmosphere. Really felt it in banjo 2 and conker was so murky and depressing looking. Early xbox games also give me this vibe. I just wish i could go back and see all the advancements again. The jump to 360 was massive
>>
>>388911640
Well son, 40 inches translates into 100 centimeters. That is one whole meter.

1080p means pixel resolution of 1920x1080, aka "FullHD".

LEDs are these teeny weeny light bulbs that consume very little power compared to some older tech, and can produce very clear image.

Thats just bullshit dude. I got a 360 with gears of war 2, ninja gaiden 2, battlefield bad company, and sonic unleashed. Gears 2 sported tons of chaos at all times with a lot of blood and gibbing. Ninja gaiden 2 had so many enemies, arms, and blood spurts flying on screen at once. Battlefield BC still has the best audio I have ever heard in a game because of how dynamic it is, and the grainy filter used along with a strong color and special effects gave the game a depressing, gritty, murky vibe while being humorous and serious at the same time. Sonic unleashed depicted never before seen speeds at that level of detail with that level of complexity in backgrounds and particle effects

And then there was kameo....i got fucking kameo to. I dont remember much of that game but it was pretty for a launch 360 game. All i know is i was way more impressed going from xbox to 360, than n64 to xbox. Not to discredit the 5th gen jump though but christmas 08 was fucking MAGICAL for me

So you missed all the good stuff during 6th and 7th gen?

Pretty much all you described was very "meh, been there, done that" during 7th generation. Yeah, it was cool to see consoles to be able to render bumpmapping and dynamic lighting in wider scale, but all around nothing too fancy compared to the Team-Silent's PS2 titles or anything on PC from 2004 forward.
>>
>>388912726
Well lets see. My fist console was an n64. Then i got a gamecube and xbox...i used the xbox way more. The gamecube honestly was not that good. Graphics wise the most impressive things i remember playing is star fox adventures and mario sunshines water. Most of my play time was on the xbox and i would play with friends on xbox live. That tiny team of developers would not have the time, resources, or passion to create a huge sprawling level with interesting geometry. So instead they'll use a few set puzzle pieces, let a computer swap them around, and give their game unlimited replay value.

I swear, you edgy contrarians think you're being clever and unique just because you hate the newest 'trend' without actually examining its pros and cons. Modern indies use procedural generation because it can make a tiny game have hundreds of hours of replay value, especially in the 'rougelite' genre that you see so much of.

not really on topic but could someone post the recommended thief fan missions
>>
it bugs me that if you had a competent team that could keep to an art style, you could easily pump out a game that had hundreds of weapons or hundreds of cars or just thousands of houses to duke it own in. just make it singleplayer so balance is that big of a deal, or co-op only or what not.

hes doing Poweslave (exhumed) as well which is great because the dos version is fucking unplayable. strafing is completely broken.

weird game cause completely different versions came out on PS1 and the saturn..

that game was a clusterfuck of lost potential. setting and stuff was sick, especially the metroidvania elements too, but it had some 1hit kill traps and god awful platforming...

criminally underrated PS1 game because of difficulty spikes and awkward controls

art, music and game design is 10/10. emulate it so you can autosave and not get mad at some parts. devs later went on to make the equally fantastic bugs bunny platformers like Lost in Time

Because even though they may mimic the look of an older console, its still running on a modern engine and thus has higher requirements.

Ballistic NG is a game meant to mimic the look of the old PS1 Wipeout games, but still has a requirement of 1GB of RAM because, again, modern engines simply need more resources.

isnt that why the first level dies? its a "follow another car tutorial to learn the basics" and it just never works because something goes wrong. now that you mention the speed and ai fucking up im sure of it, but its been like a fucking decade since i played a version of the game that worked right so maybe im retarded. not a crash crash, just, game fails to continue
this dude and his car, you follow em. its a shame because i was a total shitter at the time and age and didnt do anything but the deathmatch mode with silly combos and i really want to play it proper and finish the campaign and really play the game. such a neat idea as well that could use a great remake
