Reposting in response to the last thread where I was arguing that it's very likely that the game will have combo variety and freedom once people get time with it by comparing the baseline combo system to Marvel 3:

Marvel 3 Magic Series:

In addition, switching characters mid-combo in DBFZ is something you can just do during your air combo instead of having it be a gambit the opponent can break. It's a lot more consistent to bring in a heavy-hitter mid-combo once your point opens the other guy up.

The most base level of combo structure in DBFZ has more depth than Marvel 3's. UMvC3 had a very complex combo system under the surface, so I feel like DBFZ can easily have a lot of variety as well. There's a lot of moves that lead to long juggle states that I'm not seeing a ton of conversion on.

My webm is posted every thread, and yes the basic structure is simple, but there's so much you can do after Hellzone here instead of Light Grenade.

There's moves like Taiyoken, Cell's Bearhug, even Goku's repeated kicks that have extended juggle/stun states after that people aren't utilizing yet, and very few combos have made use of assist extensions to boot. Shit, most people haven't even grasped how to use their Smashes or character switching.

I don't think there's anything to worry about, it's pretty obvious the game has enough conmpetitive meat to it and lot's of areas that could really blossom up in that regard.

I really hope that we continue to get actually competitively viable licensed fighting games. Pokken was great,, and DBFZ looks fantastic; and the more of them we get the more of a chance we'll get experimental mechanics since these tend to stick to traditions left, which is something the genre could really use. Pokken in particular, in regards to the current conversation about combo complexity and variety, has a lot of unique mechanics that encourages that (the way it's attack height system works and the phase shift system)

It would have been neat if DBFZ had each character start in their base state, and a whole unique mechanic for transformations in that regard.

Black is literally only a Goku clone in terms of his face and hair; even his clothes and expressions are different. Merged Zamasu likely has more, but I honestly think that back when the game was greenlit and the roster was being put together, Black had been around a while while Merged was maybe at best just happening; there was potentially more to work with from Black at the time they were putting characters together.

Besides, Goku Black in and of himself is popular, and I imagine just paying Masako/Schemmel for another character is cheaper than getting Zamasu's VA (looking at it from a business perspective).

It's a fast and semi-safe 50-50, more of a 60-40 considering how it can additionally be used for instant cross-ups or just empty jump mindgames. Your opponent can try punishing it but at close range and short notice they won't land anything substantial. They can block low or high, with the low block option becoming safer after the first 10 frames, and in most cases they'll be at a disadvantage by virtue of trying to react.

Some other 3 on 3 games offer 1 on 1 online modes, like KOF14.
Because it's a team game, the inputs are made simpler on each character. It's not like you're gonna have to learn 3 guilty gear characters here. A big mistake people make is getting in over their head trying to learn combos when they should really be learning how to play the game at a basic level. Don't need combos on any of your characters early on if you can block everything and punish with throws and heavier attacks/specials.

What does popularity have to do with who is getting into the game? The game's roster will be split into 3 categories for the most part:

I have no clue who they'll pick for the last category, but if 16 is any indication, it could be anybody with half-decent relevance with at least one fight to their name.

Also, I'd like to note that Nappa has an SH Figuarts before a lot of other characters. The line has a bunch of Gokus, Vegetas, Trunkses, Gohans, Piccolo, Krillin, Frieza, Cell, Beerus, Whis, 16/17/18, and Broly, and now Nappa. I'm not sure why he was chosen before any Buu or Ginyu Force member, but the fact that he was has to count for something.

For the record, I don't care about Nappa much as a character. I just think he'd be fun to play. Same reason I'm excited for Broly; not because I like the character, but because I'm a fan of big characters that hit like trucks.

I think there's a big disconnect in how people see the Saiyan Saga. It was my first exposure to the series like a lot of Americans, but I think people in Japan and anywhere else that got OG Dragonball before Z saw it differently. Considering the timeskip into Z in the manga was basically immediate, stuff like:
>Goku having a brother from space that's evil
>Goku and Piccolo needing to team up to defeat someone
>Goku DYING
>Characters established in Dragonball like Piccolo, Tien, Krillin, etc. getting blown the fuck out despite being competent and formidable opponents prior to this
all had a lot more weight to them, I'd imagine. The issue is that after that Saga the characters that mattered slowly trickled down from all the Z Fighters to just Goku/Vegeta/Piccolo/Gohan/Krillin by Namek and then by the end of the Buu Saga it was pretty much just Goku/Vegeta with a powergap between them anyway.

I think a lot of people that see the Saiyan Saga before original DB see guys like Tien and Krillin getting curbstomped and think that they're worthless when it was honestly a good way to make the Saiyans the most formidable enemies in the series up to that point.

I think Videl has an outside chance. If you're going for uniqueness she would be total rushdown with zero ranged options (Piccolo proved the Special button doesn't need to be ki), and you could pull enough from the Great Saiyaman arc and her fight with Spopovich alone to put together a very hard-to-pin down character with command dodges/runs and counters and shit.

Cell has had a lot more play than Buu, and honestly at Gamescom he got more play than Gohan. He seems like a character that can work from pretty long distances but can also get in; there's a bunch of tools there but none that inspire keepaway, so I guess his gameplan is to always be doing something to attack and capitalizing on things, which isn't too different from Frieza outside of Cell not having many horizontal projectile options compared to other characters (his Level 3 is his only beam outside of his angled beam assist IIRC).

I think the thing people are sleeping on the most is how many combo options he has out of the Bearhug from Perfect Combination; there is a HUGE arc the opponent falls in where they're in a juggle state, and you can do damn near anything off of that.
