As a tank I make decisions on how to pull based on DPS input. If they can't damage their way out of a dungeon, they don't get big pulls because it's just unnecessary stress lost on shitters. As an AST, parser is invaluable to distribute cards properly. I don't care if you're a samurai if you can't break 2000 you don't get a sun. When running with good players timers plugin helps me coordinate cooldowns because there's no need to spend any more time in expert than necessary.

Any time somebody scoffs at using optimization in any context, easy or hard, you can just tell they're the kinda casual brainlet that's killing this game, that you encounter in DF daily, that shit up your day under the guise of "having fun". Having fun is reddit's way.

It's excellent in 8 man content, same as it was before. You do have to manage your mp better than before (not a high bar since you didn't have to at all in 3.X), and when SB dropped it had no spammable AoE so it was torture to play in dungeons. It still suffers more than the other two healers with an unskilled group in 4 man stuff, but a lot of the hate is just residual from SB launch and people not knowing how to play it without infinite MP.

SAM has the most fun AoE, by far the most interesting of the melee. NIN is Death Blossom, DRG is Doom/Sonic. MNK is Rockbreaker and maybe AotD.

If you don't want to deal with annoying optimization things and strange quirks, MNK has the least and would be the most fun. NIN/SAM/DRG all have their frustrating points.

NIN is the most fun if you like bringing threat utility.

SAM is the most fun if you like to see big numbers for yourself.

DRG is the most fun if you enjoy making BRD/MCHs pee their pants out of joy while your melee partner fist bumps you.

I like ninja best out of all the melee too, and everyone always speaks highly of it, but I almost never see them in DF/PF. It's odd. They have a lot of parses on fflogs relative to other DPS and I see plenty of them running around town but I almost never see them out in the wild. Are they just unpopular with the casual masses?

I think it got even simpler to play than it was, although I am still 67 and don't have Bhava or TCJ yet.

While SAM is in no way weak, there's like a <3% difference that keeps them from being in the ultimate speedun meta although SAMs appear in top 10 groups all the time.
