Tomb Raider is basically a cinematic platformer in 3D, also controls aren't bad, once you get used to them Lara is very agile and can easily do complex stuff, the movement has a learning curve.
Tomb Raider 2 and 3 also added new levels, weapons and ways of traversing the enviroment for Lara, they aren't only graphical updates.

Why do HD graphics make games look so much less interesting? TR2 looks like total shit graphically, but that cave looks far more ominous and interesting to explore than the 2017 TR cave.

I can't really explain it, but the early TR games, as well as games like Thief and Deus Ex, have this wonderment about them that modern games just cannot replicate. I'm guessing it's because back then level designers were less concerned with making things realistic, and instead focused on making them interesting.

Not the same way but of course they do age, camera quality, special effects, sound quality, pacing is very different today than movies from just 2-3 decades ago and even more so older movies, fake looking sets, bad makeup, color "correction" etc.
