Regardless, Persona was registered because it's a term that's not wholly original to media and Atlus needed to secure the American copyright without any sort of bullshit allegations clogging things up.

Jet Set Radio, Puyo Puyo, Super Monkey Ball and NiGHTS (the i is important) are wholly unique terminology where Sega can point to their own products as the first commercial use to stop any dispute of rights.

Same thing with Doom. It's registered because anyone could easily make a game called "Doom" and claim that id didn't invent or popularize that word as a title.

Aside from games there's stuff they licence like comics, toys, lunchboxes, etc. that people still buy. Its like people forget that a lot of IPs make money outside of their games. Also the Games usually sell more than enough to keep the series alive because every time someone says they're no longer a Sonic fan, several new fans show up in place of that old one, so there's always a cycling fanbase that'll buy the game and consume the other licensed materials of the franchise.

In Short, its a franchise that makes money because its so welcoming to newer audiences as time goes on.
