shit son, is this a mountain blade thread? was thinking about restarting after not having played for ages. vanilla warband is fine, but I was looking for something epic this time. something that'll keep me busy for months. something where every victory feels hard earned. something where I can play at my own pace.

Not as useful as they should be. The tip of the Spear / Pike has no hitbox outside of thrusts so you can't just form a wall that everyone has to respect.
It's the typical ranged weapon, they do fuck up horses tho.

If you want to powergame, only put attributes in Intelligence. That's because you can upgrade the other with Qualis Gems.
You can get Qualis Gems by kitting an invading army into a large Noldor army.
Best way to get renown early is to look for the "make two lords agree to peace" quest from guildmasters, you only need around 10k, you are rewarded more than that

The best part is early game when you're fighting scrub units. With everyone on foot you have more time to set up formations, set up lines, control volleys etc. Once you get into kingdom v kingdom battles you don't have any time to set formations because the cavalry units are already halfway down the battlefield before you can give orders. Plus, every cavalry unit plays the same, which makes every battle the same whether you're fighting 200 desert bandits or 50 of the lords men.

It is my personal preference to on-foot battles instead of mounted. My best memories of the game were the fights against noncavalry units when you're in the thick of battle trying to hold lines when face to face with the enemy. Cavalry just seems too easy & repetitive and I think the game would have benefited without every common unit having a horse.
For instance, if you've played the jap mod, horses are rare making cavalry very powerful, so the battles are much more intense and tactical.
