That was Episode 3. It was literally called Epistle 3. And even if I was a believer I'll and despite Laidlaw's tweet I'll at least agree this makes Ep 3 extremely unlikely which makes HL3 extremely unlikely.

However, you're forgetting the Combine can't get to Earth so easily any longer and I think they're pretty much cut off, their Dyson sphere(s) are likely in another galaxy/dimension/universe such that they would literally need to capture the Borealis and reverse engineer it *here* on Earth in order to call for reinforcements.

On the other hand, because *plot reasons* Gordon and Alyx seem to be the only ones who can survive even just a few Combine for any period of time the remaining Combine would pose enough of a threat already, but eliminating enough advisors would be cutting off the head(s) of the snake and without more the soldiers are literally less than the most basic of grunts.

The governments of the world purposely threw the 7 hour war and have been acting in secret throughout Half Life 2. They are more powerful then they let on and this is why Earth has developed technology even the combine do not have yet. They operate in secret and after the combine got a whiff of them, they lured them to Earth to feign their own deaths. Gordon arrives back on Earth after the US has gained enough power to remote detonate dyson spheres or some shit and is about to seize galactic power from the hands of the combine.

Assuming that it would follow what Laidlaw had planned out then sure the story would be pretty good. However for it to truly be a successor to half life 2 it would have to set new standards of fidelity and gameplay. The facial animations, physics, textures, gameplay mechanics, lighting, puzzles, and modding capability would have to all be one step above what is currently the best we have right now. Given that Valve fired all the people that were able to make half life 2 as good as it was years ago I just see no way current Valve could come close.

That sense of hopelessness would've been difficult to achieve in a game. The player wouldn't necessarily feel overwhelming despair since he knows that it's just a game rather than something real; even if things look bad, he'll figure there has to be some way forward. It would be a simple task to show an NPC feeling an emotion, but it's more difficult to make the silent first-person player character to do so. Should Gordon finally speak and say something? Should the player lose control of Gordon as he collapses and drops his crowbar? Should there be a reflection on a glass window showing Gordon's anguished face? I'm not sure how to make it work so the player actually feels the despair himself, and the whole thing doesn't end up looking awkward.
