I just started vanilla XCOM 2 as my first fore into the genre/series. I've only played 3-4 introductory missions of the story where you're still learning all the different types of missions and am really enjoying it so far. Should I expect more of the same, and if so, is it worth doling out the shekels for the DLC? Also, some have suggested it's worth playing through the game once without Chosen installed, true?

War of the Chosen is a full blown expansion with new story content complete with new allied units and enemies and bosses and added mechanics to the base game along with double Mission Timer and double Avatar Project timer. Shen's Gift adds a new unit type for you to use. War of the Chosen is a must, Shen's Gift is good because WoTC buffs the unit that you get from Shen's Gift.

Ignore Anarchy Children and Alien Rulers.

I recall early on people complained that the game forced you to work at a certain pace, there were a few mods that removed this for players that wanted to be prepared before things escalated too much. Was this ever patched?

Mini units. Focus on heroes. Near impossible to lose units. Easy as fucking shit. Every mission is a rush mission and every objective (even getting fucking gear) is a rush because THEY ARE TOO FUCKING STUPID TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE OVERWATCH AND REPLACE IT

I am really liking it. They randomized a lot of the really annoying repetitive missions. I fucking hated doing the blacksite every new game but now its faster and more randomized.
