What's the deal with chromatic aberration?

It's a stylistic filter, like film grain. I don't like it much but fortunately most games have the option to disable it.
I never understood it, it makes things look ugly as sin and unnatural. Is there some utility to it? Like its a work around against anti-aliasing but nowhere near as taxing? It would explain why some games on consoles have it like Bloodborne.

An obnoxious stylistic filter that luckily didn't take on like brown and bloom.

it is red and it is blue
are you actually asking what it is? It's a visual defect originally caused by the inability of a lens in a camera to properly refract all the incoming light to the same focal point, and developers decided to reproduce it in games for artistic effect. Same with film grain, black and white color palletes, and depth of field to an extent, they're all limitations of recording equipment, even though there's no real reason to reproduce these defects in a video game.
its completely worthless. the first time i saw this shit in a game i thought my gpu and display were fucked up because why on earth would a game purposefully separate the image into color channels and misalign them on purpose, its practically a simulator for astigmatism.

>why on earth would a game purposefully separate the image into color channels and misalign them on purpose
Because it's artistic and makes the colours "pop".

additional cheap aa method

This along with the other posts about it being "artistic". You can thank consoles for that as well as games using a massive amount of motion blur, its an easy way cover up aliasing among hiding other things.

Let's just pretend Crytek didn't popularize modern motion blur and chromatic aberration in the initially PC exclusive Crysis.

i only like that stuff if im watching a hd youtube vid of reviews or combat skill vids, but when im playing i have to turn that and stuff like motion blur off, its distracting as fuck when playing imo

Crysis 1 didn't have chromatic aberrations. Crysis 2 did.
