It just drives me crazy because it's clearly an /x/ thread, but there is potential for an interesting video game discussion centered around horror games but there is so little that can specifically be pointed out as wrong. Is it too scary? Not scary enough? Too focused on the scary element and not with the game element? Using horror themes but not really horror? There's so much to unpack with studying the horror genre alone.

The only thing I honestly want to fix with horror is the obsession the horror genre has with Silent Hill 2. Almost every single game made after 2006 tries to include "psychological" elements, when really all they're doing is putting "deep" meaning on trite and meaningless things and then making the "twist" ending be IT WAS YOU ALL ALONG!

As soon as the player dies they're disconnected from the game and any true terror they were feeling is now gone because while the character in the game died they're total safe and unharmed making much of the game's tension impotent.
>Never blatantly show what's scary
As soon as you can clearly see whatever it is that's supposed to be scary it stops being scary. It's the unknown that truly terrifies not ghosts, dolls or big scary monsters. Try to keep them to the periphery or only show them for a second or two.
>Focus on making it creepy
Fuck with spacial awareness, make people feel uncomfortable, turn off lights, play unknown sound effects, never let them feel safe for too long, subtlety move things from where they're supposed to be when the player looks away
>Try to eliminate progress walls and keep the player moving
If your game is puzzle heavy nothing takes people out of the mood faster than getting stuck at some part and then spending 4 hours sitting int he same room trying to figure it out
>Use jumpscares sparingly
Eliminating them entirely will lower the overall tension of the game, but using them too much will have the same effect, people get on edge when they think something might jump out at them, and the longer you can make them feel like that the better

The common fears are one type of fear.
Fear of the unknown is a different type of fear. Plus you have to understand the scale of the audience for the game. If you use one of the most common fears like spiders the only people who will feel fear are the people afraid of spiders but its not a creepy, seeping into your bones kind of fear. Itll be a "aaahh a spydur!! Eeekk" fear and that isnt memorable or worthy of being remembered. A true horror game, not action horror, but true horror game should make the player feel uneasy, uncomfortable in their own homes, theyll get up and open a window or turn on a light. Fear so unknown and foreign that the brain doesnt know how to cope or understand should be the goal. Thats too hard though which is why its never done in video games.

Easy: we give the player a super shotgun as soon as the game starts and assert to them that you can blast whatever the hell even remotely tries to "scare" you in the face, killing it in a hilarious and effective fashion. The game is no longer scary whatsoever, but the game can still potentially be fun. Nobody gives a fuck about the horror, it is critically acclaimed.
