Its just because youve been here for a week. People talk about the dreamcast here all the time, its even argued as the best console of its gen

No one really bought it
As you probably can tell by Sega current state

dreamcast has such a great library for a console that only lasted like 2 years. idk about other regions but here in europe it pretty much died in its peak. games like headhunter, shenmue 2, crazy taxi 2, etc. were all coming out when the system was pretty much on its deathbed. most consoles final games are some shitty sport games.

I'm currently playing through Grandia 2 on my Dreamcast, being able to just burn games onto CD's is great but that's a portion of the reason why it died so quick despite its good library

>piracy killed the Dreamcast
This is a false narrative. People forget that the Dreamcast only lasted until 2001. Broadband internet to download shit quickly and CD burners were not nearly as ubiquitous as they are today. Also, I doubt 10% of Dreamcast owners at the time even knew piracy existed for it.

I never had it as a kid because we were a nintendo house/I was 6 when it came out and my folks wouldn't buy us consoles until they were basically last-gen but i remember reading up on it fervently once I had SA2B for Gamecube. My house mate bought one a while ago in anticipation of our moving in together because he loves arcade games and we both love fight games. In May of this year he opened it up and did the necessary prep to be able to play burnt discs so now it's the second or third most played console in our house. We have a stack of roughly $1300 worth of pirated games we cycle through on the reg. Pic related is what we've got, and I've still got 9 more to burn, plus the six or so actual original games he's got, and the three his friend promises to send him, including hydro thunder and shenmue

Dreamcast sold more units than the ps2 in 2000 though

>>388812795

The Dreamcast has an early 00's charm. It was also the first of it's generation of consoles. Looking at the Dreamcast and it's library of games is like looking at an episode of the Jetson's. You are looking back into what Sega and it's developers thought the future of gaming was going to be. Cutting edge graphics, deep story lines, engaging gameplay, innovating new ways to play and interact with games, online gaming. The Genesis was similar in a way, with their online game download service, and strange peripherals. It's a shame Sega scrambled to get their shit together last minute like they did. The Dreamcast was great. It's too bad I didn't get to play one until only a few years ago.

That wasdue to the PS2 marred by shortages, they only made 500,000 when launch US it still didn't help DC and the PSone, a remodeled version of the original PlayStation, was the best-selling console in the U.S. at the start of the 2000 holiday season, 5 year old tech was crushing the Dreamcast's ass.
>>
>>388814964
Shut up...
>>
>>388814716
it didn't beat the Psone and there were polls that year showing most were buying PSone because PS2 was sold out.
And it doesn't change the fact that demand for the PS2 wasn't going to keep Dreamcast alive. Even if the new head didn't kill it softly it's a safe beat it would have just be bruised in shame even harder trying to keep up with the better/more popular Gen 6 tech

>>388814924
I'm not saying piracy didn't exist. It obviously existed. I'm just saying it wasn't so widespread common knowledge, and the tools weren't as widely distributed that it actually had an impact on sales.

The Dreamcast sold 10 mil hardware units. I'm going to assume that maybe 100K actually knew about piracy for it at the time, and that's being generous. It's probably closer to 50K.

that's a very stupid argument. it's library was small weak and even if you don't count all the post Dreamcast ports the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube had not only larger libraries but more variety and creativity. What did Dreamcast have? A pile of arcade game ports? a very few decent 1st party titles?

>>388816796
Not entirely correct. Sega gave permission to Yu Suzuki to use the name Shenmue and its characters, but they didn't give him or Deep Silver any ownership, so they cannot do a remaster, remake or what have you.

On the other hand, Sega of Europe registered not long ago the website shenmuehd, which implies Sega themselves may be planning to do a re-release by the time 3 is wrapping up.
>>
>>388808840
Same problem every Sega console had, it had a fantastic library of action/arcade games which have 0 appeal to unskilled children. Although Sega consoles had some high quality RPGs they didn't have nearly as many as the SNES, PSX or PS2. The Sega touch of intense, arcade action means nothing to kids that don't even notice frame rate drops in Contra 3.

Children don't actually care about getting CRAZY MONEY high scores or getting a JET rank on every level they care about just being able to get through the game. When people talk about games they loved as a kid they don't talk about autistically playing the same level over and over again to perfect it they talk about if they "beat" it, the music they liked and their favorite characters.

It came out at a time when hardware was rapidly evolving at an extreme rate and by the time the PS2, Xbox, and GC came out, the DC was inferior on almost every aspect from its dialup only connection to the GD-ROM ect ect.

Not to mention that many third party devs were still miffed and refused to do business with them such as EA which was a blow to potential revenue sales.

There was no chance Sega had with the DC, the competition was just too strong and they weren't in a position to fight back whatsoever. They really fucked up horribly with the Sega Saturn and the Sega CD. That's where their problems began.

It did fail but not on the market end but Segas where they manufactured as many Sega CDs as sold Sega genesis systems of it's lifetime. That was a horrible business action because:
1. Not every sega genesis system owner will want and/or can afford the CD
2. Not every sold system will be in working order
So while it had a good installment group the over manufacturer systems ruin any chance at good profit shares.
>>
>>388818831
That's not really true though. They had a lot of shade thrown their way over the FMV meme. I mean, the fucking thing had less of a decent library in the west than the TG-CD. Let that sink in a moment.
The saturn's raw dumbassery hurt them far more since it was an all-around fuckup across the board, but believing people weren't down on Sega over the CD is flat out retarded.

Except it did. When you constantly release new hardware upgrades like the Sega CD and 32x all you do is leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. Why do you think the PS1 dominated the Sega Saturn in Fall 1995?

>b-because they had a sloppy release by launching it in May 1995!

Many reasons, management, but also just the general attitude. I remember several of my older cousins (from different families) getting PS1's in Christmas 1995. This was after two of which owned a Sega console. Many didn't see the Saturn having a credible library compared to that of the solid lineup PS1 had to offer.
>>
>>388819079
>FMV meme. I mean, the fucking thing had less of a decent library in the west than the TG-CD. Let that sink in a moment.
70% of games on the Sega CD were not FMV games. The only FMV meme is the retrospective one perpetuated by AVGN and his e-celebrity ilk.

>but believing people weren't down on Sega over the CD is flat out retarded.
Nobody was down over it. I was fucking there, you weren't. Sega CD was always seen as a premium product only for hardcore gamers, like the PS4 Pro. Considering its absolutely immense cost (twice the base unit, and still requires the base unit) it did very well to sell between 2 to 6 million units. It was not a commercial success, but it was not a flop either. A "meh" product rather than a bad one.

There is a temptation for younger generations who only know about these add-ons from a historical context to lazily put the CD and 32X into the one group. Only the 32X was a piece of shit.
>>
>>388819218
>Why do you think the PS1 dominated the Sega Saturn in Fall 1995?

You answered your own question there. No need to go into wild uninformed speculation about the Sega CD.
>>
>>388819326

>Sega CD was always seen as a premium product only for hardcore gamers, like the PS4 Pro.

By all means, please tell us what hardcore games were on the Sega CD that were worth the purchase.

Also the PS4 Pro was an upgraded PS4, not an accessory to the PS4 like the Sega CD was for the Genesis.

>it did very well to sell between 2 to 6 million units.

Nobody is denying it didn't sell at all. But first off that's a large gap between 2-6 million. 2 million isn't that great if the production matched the amount of Genesis's sold. And its barren library didn't help their reputation. It did not whatsoever help with their image and people took note of that when it came to picking and choosing a next gen system in 1995-1996.

> one perpetuated by AVGN and his e-celebrity ilk.

You're acting as if anyone who disagrees with you watches AVGN. Last time I watched an AVGN video was maybe 9 years ago and even at that it was something I browsed over since I never found him that funny to begin with.

Final Fight CD
Snatcher
Keio's Flying Squadron
Lords of Thunder
Robo Aleste
Shining Force CD
Slipheed
SoulStar

That's just a handful.

>2 million isn't that great if the production matched the amount of Genesis's sold
There's no evidence Sega produced as many CDs as Genesis consoles. Sounds like one of those Youtube urban myths.

>And its barren library didn't help their reputation. It did not whatsoever help with their image and people took note of that when it came to picking and choosing a next gen system in 1995-1996.
The library was not barren, and you would know if you actually looked at it. It just wasn't that large. The average gamer didn't even buy a fucking Sega CD so why would it make a difference for a mainstream console war like PS1 vs Saturn?
>>
>>388811318
Have you actually played both versions? It's hard to find a DC port that is actually better than DC. The ONE example I can think of is Shenmue II, but for everything else, whether it being framerate, resolution, or bugs, DC version is the best version.

I can think of a few examples where you are wrong
Ecco the Dolphin Defender of the Future
Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Rez

Alright, now it's time for you to magically explain away how 70% of the Sega CD library was not FMV games.
>>
Dreamcast was the kind of console that was owned by the kid that was defined by video games. He had every obscure console and video game.
Our school was split into groups by the consoles we had because all of us lended games to each other. Then this fat kid that should by all rights be bullied for his hobbies is actually a friend to everyone because he is like the video game Jesus that goes from camp to camp and trade lend some of the many millions of different games he has.

Of course as we grew older and started caring more about social status than our passion for hobbies, that fat kid got bullied into a permanent NEET state.

>Sounds like one of those Youtube urban myths.

Sounds like a lie created by the Jews no doubt!
>>
>the people in this thread enjoyed the DC

>One day video completely stops working

Rip
>>
>>388820340

>All those really obscure games

How many units did these games sell in total and how common were they in distribution? Distribution is key and when you want to sell a game like Keio's Flying Squadron, you best only produce a limited supply stateside because it's the fucking early 90's and anime was still an obscure form of media for the average consumer.

>The library was not barren, and you would know if you actually looked at it

If you sell an accessory for $299 you best make sure it has a decent payoff of games that make the purchase worth it.

>b-but it was made for hardcore gamers!!!

No, Sega wouldn't create a pricey piece of hardware for a very small niche especially with games that didn't look compelling enough for the purchase to be justified. And your PS4 Pro analogy earlier is absolutely laughable.

>The average gamer didn't even buy a fucking Sega CD so why would it make a difference for a mainstream console war like PS1 vs Saturn?

It's called word of mouth you moron. It also doesn't take a genius to realize that the Sega CD didn't have much to offer when looking at a Toys R Us or Sears catalogue. Two accessories that did poorly don't give the the consumer a good perception of a company.
>>
>>388814847
>You are looking back into what Sega and it's developers thought the future of gaming was going to be. Cutting edge graphics, deep story lines, engaging gameplay, innovating new ways to play and interact with games, online gaming.
Yeah, I think this is why so many Dreamcast games have such a strange atmosphere. It seems like they're filled with so much hope for the gaming world.

There was no credible CD based alternative though, if you didn't go full PC. Hell, a CD drive for PC at that time cost more than half as much alone.

>No, Sega wouldn't create a pricey piece of hardware for a very small niche especially with games that didn't look compelling enough for the purchase to be justified
Well that's what they did, what Neo-Geo did, and what NEC did with the Turbografix.

>It also doesn't take a genius to realize that the Sega CD didn't have much to offer when looking at a Toys R Us or Sears catalogue. Two accessories that did poorly don't give the the consumer a good perception of a company.

Not just texture, worse a lot of stuff. Pretty much any game that has a lot of transparency effects is worse on other platforms since the Dreamcast had order independent transparency.
>>
>>388808840
/v/ doesn't like to talk about it, but most of people who currently reside on this board weren't even alive when dreamcast was released

What texture bug? Anyway the PS2 version has extra special effects and improved level design. That makes it the best version.

Wow yeah, that's a great tradeoff for massively inferior everything else.

The textures are almost identical.
>no chao VMU content
Yeah but GBA content

>>388824653

That has nothing to do with visual quality, just makes game engine easier to code
>>

It absolutely does since it wasn't possible to do in even PC shit like DirectX until version 11.

You just have garbage taste

I remember getting one at the store with soul reaver and quake 3 arena.

No, it seriously doesn't have an effect on visual quality. It just means that the GPU can sort transparent objects without the CPU having to waste cycles on doing it. An efficiency thing rather than a visual thing.
>>
>>388827613
Soul Reaver was an excellent port. I can't imagine playing Quake with a single stick though.

Final Fight wasn't obscure but Silpheed sure as hell was, it was also an awful game too. Many people I knew looked at the library who did own a Genesis would usually say stuff like I already own all these games on Genesis, I could just buy a Super Nintendo instead.
>>
>>388808924
>its even argued as the best console of its gen
Only by delusional Sega fans. I had a Dreamcast but the PS2 is the undisputed best console of that gen. The competition didn't even come close in terms of number, quality and variety of games.
>>
>>388815515
It's just because most of their best game got a port on other consoles after the end of the dreamcast and probably why you don't remember how it was good in that time.
