After the opening attack. If you arent into it by the time youre at the first village dealing with the dogs, just close the game because its not for you. Not that youre wrong for not being able to get into it but its an older rpg.

Don't mash buttons during combat. It's more of a rhythm game.
Bear through Act II. It has one of the more complex investigation quests in RPGs and there is a lot of quests to handle at the same time. Don't worry about it and just progress naturally, most of them resolve themselves during main quest.
After that the game is less of a chore and becomes much more enjoyable. You start to get access to fast travel etc.

I was going to make the obvious joke, "It gets good when you do," but despite it being the kind of opinion that would probably best be suited for a "vidya confessions thread," I really disliked the original Witcher. Story and characters were good, but the game itself is such a fucking slog. The combat is shit, and 3/5ths of the fucking game take place in a terrible swamp with infinitely respawning enemies. The absolute most egregious of those, and the point at which I seriously almost quit playing entirely, is towards the end, when you have to rescue soldiers in swamp caves, but you can't enter the caves when there's enemies around; and as I already established, there's always fucking enemies around because they infinitely respawn.

Old pasta I made. It might be outdated but just make sure you get FCR, the rest doesn't matter so much. FCR is great even if you're playing on easy mode, people tend to say it's only for making the game hard but that's just not true.

If I remember correctly, it "repelled" drowners, meaning they still spawned/came up out of the water, but they wouldn't attack; so you still weren't able to enter any of the caves because enemies were still considered present, even if they were just standing gormlessly around.

Witcher 1 > shit > Gwentstone > Witchman 2 = Witchman 3
