I've been pirating for a decade without a VPN and never gotten one of these

It is physically impossible for anyone to prove you did it, if you got taken to court all you would need to say is "Sorry your honor I was doing maintenance on my home network that day and my router was unpassworded as a result, someone must have leeched my wifi to download the copyrighted work"
>>
>>388803135

>>
Net neutrality is dead tomorrow
>>

Most American ISP's do this now though anon
>>
>>388803135
I've been pirating shit for the better part of the last 15 years and never got a single C&D letter or alert like that. Let me guess, you're just being retarded and downloading some new blockbuster movie or western AAA game off a public tracker like Pirate Bay or something. Those are the only things copyright jews try to go after people for.

>>
>>388804154
It's pointless for stuff like indie games or anything Japanese (except maybe Sony or Nintendo) because they don't have the resources to deal with it. However, for western AAA games and movies they have a whole legal and copyright division sitting around to do this sort of shit.

So if your taste in games and movies is shit then you're significantly more likely to get a C&D letter.
>>
>>388804392
This is why I'd never touch an AAA game. I don't need 50 gigs of cinematic garbage clogging my download speeds. Comcast bumrapes me enough as it is.

>>
>>388803135
Kinda interesting, I pirated my whole life back in Brazil, games, tv shows, movies whatever. Always a public tracker like TPB. Of course my ISP never cared.

Moved to the US recently, I'm with Centurylink. Put some things up for download, such as Game of Thrones, Inception. I kid you not, within 3 days I got an e-mail telling me of 10 different DMCA complaints my ISP got and forwarded to me. Been behind a VPN since and it's fine now, but just saying this kinda shit does really happen.

Want me to post proof? Happened to me a few days ago.

The key is, your IP is public, the more public the site is and the more popular the torrent itself is, the more likely someone will be watching it. In a lot of countries nobody cares, and to be honest, it usually isn't the ISP's fault, it's the Cable Channels being a pain. They will force the ISP to take some sorta action against you by law.

>>388807294
Oh you don't have to defend yourself. In fact we are entering a very interesting age where there's a lot of CP produced by... kids. Who just record themselves with a phone and put it online. The ISPs themselves don't care. The people who owns the copyright on whatever you download monitors peers from popular torrents, send notices to ISPs associated with the IPs they find, and the ISP either tells them to fuck off or they have a person they pay minimum wage to warn you and sometimes read from a script why bittorrent is the worst thing ever and you shouldn't use it or you'll get a virus.

IPTorrents is the most popular "watched" private tracker. But really I think it's only on super popular shit, like if you try to download the latest episode of Game of Thrones a few hours after it aired.

In my personal experience, they targeted, on a public tracker:

Rick and Morty (yeah yeah I know, pickle rick)
Inception
Band of Brothers
Top Gun
Rogue One: Star Wars
The Wolf of Wall Street
Game of Thrones (twice in the same day)

Centurylink actually forwarded me all the messages they got from the companies. Most of them tried to scare me with "you will be sued" and "your ISP will be forced to terminate your service".

My favorite though was this gold mine: "If you click on the link below and login to the Rightscorp, Inc. automated settlement system, for $20 per infringement, you will receive a legal release from the copyright owner, WB."

Warner Brothers wanted me to just pay $20 (per torrent) and be like "Let's just forget this happened, eh?"

>>
Free games from every generation of consoles and pc at the best quality and not paying twice for mp access.
>>
>>388808573
You don't, really. Think of the other peers downloading a torrent as other "people". Anyone could be just there to watch who else is downloading. On a public tracker like TPB it takes very little effort for anyone to just connect and watch. And for shit that a company cares about, they will be watching, like this guy says:
>>388807242

So a Private Tracker is better. But it's not safe either, someone could easily also be in there. Your ISP could also not care at all about the companies bothering them. There's a lot of factors, but I don't think you can just "tell", it's all about chance.

They don't take you to court, if they did they'd just drown you in fees.

I work as tech support, they send people over semi-often to 'ensure their wifi is safe' if using ours, after they're told and confirm they understand it, if it happens X times they'll just drop you because it's not worth the fine that the ISP takes, in smaller/medium ISPs (what I work for) this is more obvious.

Honestly OP should just get a fucking seedbox though, the number one way they catch people is from people reporting you that are also pirating it 'in order to catch people'. They post your IP and bam, there you go, your IP has to follow up.

You could claim there are reasons you need an open network and if you have your own router behind theirs (you should) they'll never know what you're using for your wifi settings or such, not that they'll check even if you are using theirs.

Private trackers or seedboxes are both good answers to this, I prefer the seedbox method but private trackers if you don't mind your ratio is fine too. Also, really the legal problems come from uploading not downloading if it really goes that route, just saying.

>>388803950
Verizon and Time Warner both do this, you've just been lucky or practicing decent torrenting habits, OP probaly jumped on TPB and downloaded from first page or some shit. Do it, you'll get a message quick.

If you're not making a profit or financial gain from the copyright infringement you're classified into the civil copyright infringement category.
Civil copyright infringement is ezpz to prove which is why it's the choice of the MPAA, RIAA and vidya gaem publishers.

Go read up on some cases before pretending you know anything about how copyright law works.

I actually did this earlier today, on accident.

I signed up for comcast a few days ago, set up my service and everything today. Noticed that my connections were timing out constantly, somehow my modem was connecting to theirs wirelessly even though I was using a wired connection.

Got into their router settings, saw what the password was, canceled my service and got my refund. They've got a faster plan than me anyway.
>>
>>388809276
Is a Seedbox really worth it? I've been thinking about that a lot but on a Private tracker I get about 1.7 mb/s behind a VPN (out of a 2 mb/s) max. On a Seedbox I'd get the torrent downloaded very quickly wherever it's at, sure, but then I'd still have to transfer it over using FTP or something, wouldn't the speed be even worse than simply covering it under a VPN?

They do, they drag your ass to small claims court with $15 to $150 filing fees which you will pay when you lose.

Most of the time it's just not worth the effort trying to individually go after small infringers.
That doesn't mean they can't do it to make an example out of you.
Roll the dice if you want, but don't pretend that small copyright infringement actions haven't been taken.

One I have is seedbox.co or something, I used whatbox for a long time and it was okay but was about double the price of seedboxco's cheapest one.

Yes you'd still hajve to transfer over FTP, it's about the same speed just use CuteFTP it has a multi mode that's great as it will split it into about 20 files and download those then remerge them essentially. I've got Gigabit internet so it works great, but even on slow speeds it's great.

It also means that you can torrent it right then and there, seed (if you want), then download it overnight. Not htat you can't do that with torrenting directly, but it's already 'yours' and you don't need to worry about peers when you go to actually acquire it.

Whatbox has really good tutorials on setting up FTP as well as 'one click seedbox downloads' for chrome/firefox, so I can go click a magnet/torrent link and the seedbox will download it, then I just go check on it at night and grab it.

The downside of course is cost, it's like $10~/mo

>>388809643
It almost never reaches that, and it's super rare, like you said it's just to make an example, unless they can prove it's you (they usually can't unless the ISP really plays ball) you're gucci.

IF you're behind your own router the ISP won't have info on your MAC address so you're usually okay, if you're only using their hardware there's a chance of actual problems, but it's rare enough you'll run into this.

Well you do have gigabit internet so that makes a lot of sense. I think for me my method works best, as my download speed isn't that amazing. I'm already downloading it at near max speed with every torrent anyways.

Having a seedbox would just be redundant I think, it'd be a marginal speed gain. I'd drop the VPN for a seedbox, so I'd stop paying $10 a month so I can start paying $10 a month. Storage is another concern. I have about 4Tb of files to seed, so having a seedbox I'd need something big enough to hold that much and keep seeding at all times, I think those are more expensive. Already got an external here that fits all that so yeah.

Thanks for the information though.

Roll the dice.

It's quite easy to prove if you're living alone or in a small household. All they have to do is prove on the balance of probabilities that you did do it because it's a civil action.

>If you're behind a router
What happens is that the copyright holder subpoenas your IP address and account information from your ISP.
>ISP doesn't play ball
Yes your ISP's management would certainly not comply with a subpoena and go to jail for contempt of court just so they can protect their 'customers'.

The reason they don't pursue individuals often is because it's not worth their time and they'd rather go after the hosts of the torrents etc.
That doesn't mean they can't pin it on you if they choose to make an example.

Things I get caught for 100% of the time
- Movies released in the past decade
- Bundles of an entire season of a show from certain networks that have been up for awhile (BBC, whoever runs Monk and House, HBO)
- Pop Music

Things you will never get caught for even after 5 terabytes of downloading
- Anime
- Video Games
- Non pop music
- Any software application that has ever existed (still chance of a virus though if you're retarded)

Basically only the MPAA and the RIAA have any ability to mass monitor torrents and ping you for them.

English rules is just as bad if not worse, since companies will knowingly file malicious lawsuits that they otherwise wouldn't have just to hit you with the double whammy if they win, since they can afford to pay their massive legal teams to come down on you. Thousands per music track,

Probably in the tens of thousands.
No video game company has pursued individuals yet, but it doesn't mean some CEO looking for someone to blame for flagging sales won't pursue someone to make an example of.

Here's the thing about torrenting. It's like going to a banana stand and holding the banana farmer and his family hostage at gunpoint. You're stealing the bananas he worked very, very hard to grow and sell. Meanwhile you're also alternately raping his children and wife until you turn your perverse sexual demons on the farmer himself. While you're forcing the innocent family to commit heinous acts of incest and sodomy you are eating the bananas for free. After you run out of bananas you execute the entire family at point blank and defecate on thier remains. Then you go to a coconut stand down the street and see your opportunity to abduct and rape the 74 year old shopkeeper and her husband at knife-point killing both after torturing them for hours. This is pirating vidya in a nutshell.

There isn't all that much reason to have a data cap except to punish customers who actually use their full bandwidth often. If you pay for the usage of the bandwidth then what is the point in your ISP putting in arbitrary caps? Except to have you upgrade to data capless internet for only a small fee.
>>
>>388811961
how much of it do you even look at
>>
>>388811918
Jesus God.

How much did you get charged for?
They offered me unlimited for an extra $25 a month.
>>
>>388811787
Not really uncommon, especially with large families that are always on netflix.
>>

Why on earth would you want FFXV or Fallout 4?
>>

Data caps ara hell on earth now that video games are fucking massive for absolutely no reason
thank god I don't have a cap
>>

It's nice having it on stand-by without needing internet or fearing it's been deleted from an image/video site.

I also make porn captions, so.

Comcast charges for $10 per 50gb slot after cap.

Also that 25 deal is a rip off but if you use the data get it.
>>
>>388803135
There are countless ways to mask you traffic and avoid shit like this, why do people in countries with kike copyright laws cannot into any of them?
>>

No it wont, but atleast we don't have data caps. Who said i have to give a fuck about mussies when i can shitpost here for all time.

>Customer Service TWC
I don't know what magical land where TWC is good for customer service, I spent two hours just trying to say that my cable box wasn't working. I ended up hanging up and trying again, during the whole automated part i was trying to get through it quicker by answering yes when it started to ask questions, it realized I was speaking but didn't understand me dispite getting through it the first time. The second time I did it, the system booted me to someone who spoke probably spanish and had to wait two and a half weeks for someone to show up just to have him say.

>"Oh that's why it's not working, there's a chalk mark saying this is to be brought back to be looked at, I guess the other tech put the wrong box in"

You imply that every person in the states has data caps, the only places you will ever find that nonsense are bumfuck rural areas where there is zero competition, which is an infrastructure problem more than anything

I did my undergrad at Purdue, and they are king kikes of their dorm Internet.

The speeds are Godly; however, they have a fucking ROLLING 24 HOUR CAP of, wait for it, 8 fucking gigs.

I had to space downloading fallout vegas over a few days. And bare in mind this was before Netflix had the shit quality option. Meaning you could only watch Netflix for two hours a day or less.

Go over? They shut your room down.

The ISP would lose business. No one does business with people who attack their customers.

Russi, we recently got a new law, that states that using VPNs to bypass blocked content is illegal. How are they gonna track that is beyond me, but hey, those retards passes the law that states that ISPs should keep all your internet traffic from the past half a year. Considering most of the traffic nowadays is encrypted I wonder how are tge gonna decrypt that shit in case of wild Muhammeds.
>>
>>388803652
I've only ever gotten one once the dumbest part is that it was for a show my roommate was watching legally on Netflix.
>>
>>388813282
>How are they gonna track that is beyond me
They won't be able to, not even sure why they would bother passing a law like this. Had a co-worker who paid $10 monthly for a VPN and would download upwards of 1TB per month and nothing ever happened to him. Your ISP can see your downloading a ton of shit but they can't see what any of it is, there's no way to enforce a law like that.

jokes aside, people need to remember that the US is more than New York, and that the UK is more than England, I'm sick of 1/2 of the threads on this fucking board devolving into pointless country shitflinging. I wish the mods would enforce this shit because it's goddamn obnoxious.

The political method you're seeing now is 'stalling for a big news day', so when things have died down about Net Neutrality and something big elsewhere is going on, then it will be voted on quietly and quickly. If that fails thenthey'll try again later after another period of quiet.
Kind of like paid mods.

Lack of demo is such an outdated justification, with Steam's (and most other online distributors except GOG) unconditional refund systems allowing any game to be demoed for a couple of hours.

Crap products still deserve money IF despite their crapiness a consumer decides that the game is still worth their time, instead of just refunding the game. Sure, I may not exactly like McDonald food, but I'm not going to whine and ask for a refund because it didn't taste as great as a $50 steak.

Software piracy has not always been black and white, but it's becoming increasingly so as pirates increasingly run out of legitimate justifications: but but the game is too old and I can't buy a legit copy! GOG. But but.. demo! Refund system. Seriously, it's over.
>>
>>388803456
I'm now a seedbox master race but when I was torrenting without a VPN the only times I get a notification was for downloading a season or so of Homeland (Showtime) and my dumbass roommate downloading a CAM of a Fast and Furious movie. Never once got notification about any games/music/movies older than six months of Blu Ray release.

Either get a seedbox of 10 bucks a month or at least a solid VPN service for 2-5 dollars a month.
>>
>>388813449
I actually need to find a VPN for myself. The main problem is finding VPN that offers full speed and finding a way to set it up that way that all traffic aside from Steam goes through VPN, since I quite enjoy paying less than double for my vidya. Probably will have to buy a new router, get that shit loaded with OpenWRT and go from there.
>>
>>388813892
You could just purchase one from some VPN providers. I know Black VPN will sell you one for like 100 bucks, and throw in a year of VPN for free.
>>
>>388813569
Only if you are dumb enough to use VK publicly, otherwise torrent and watch all CP that you want, they are too retarded to do anything beyond "he posted CP on his facebook page, gotta lock him up". Just use vpn nigga and you will be fine.
>>
>>388813853
Only moral justifications
1) Not legitimately released in your country or censored/edited
2) Emulation as archival procedure.
3) Software/game is not available AT ALL through digital distributors and physical copies are rare. I have some fond memories of mid 90s NBA Live/NBA JAM games that will never ever see the light of day again due to licensing issues with player union. This argument holds water with old sport titles and licensed titles.

I am in Russia, if they even ship it here, it wont pass customs and after that would get stolen in the post office. It is easier to just do it myself.

>>388813675
