Let's be real here - by "indie" they basically mean "any game that we can afford". Suda said back in February he wanted Monokuma from Danganronpa in his new game, and Kodaka was more than okay with it.

It's a series that's ostensibly a parody of the gaming industry and gamer culture. Travis is a pathetic loser who's only motivation in life is to be "number one", so he kills his way through a bunch of colorful bosses with reckless disregard, despite them being more interesting and developed as characters than he is. The ending of the game is a giant pisstake because he keeps getting a bunch of shitty twists piled onto him to the point that he gets pissed off and ditches the game. In the second game they try to build a more personal story around him as a character which is still cool but ultimately lacks a good deal of the satirical bite that the previous game had, probably because Suda didn't direct it.

Had no idea how they'd drag him out for a sequel since his story ended with the last game. Crossing him over with other games is one of very few concepts I see making sense.
