On November 22nd, 2002 a game simply labeled "The Greatest RPG ever made" manifested itself inside Essen Cathedral, Germany, while the bishop there was holding Mass.
By the grace of God, it appeared just as the Bishop was breaking the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was a modern miracle and a sign of His plan.
Piranha Bytes employees were in attendance and gracefully received the gift as per God's wishes. 7 holy days and nights later the game was copied and sent out into the world where it would be cherished and loved by the chosen few who were destined by God to play it.
Fast forward to the modern time and some say the game is still talked about in secret and in hushed forums, where simply uttering it's name brings joy to those who know of its greatness. "Once in a lifetime experience," "perfect game," and many more praises have beset it's cherished form. But one simply stood out. "Greatest RPG ever made." The game now had it's disciples to spread its word of truth forever more.

How come Gothic is so bad? Controls are clunky and combat is very annoying, but I'll admit story is pretty good. Arcania fixed controls but messed everything else

For starters it needs to be based off of table top games and allow you to dictate the story through the world around through various means and each decision you make should have an effect on something else within the world.
Examples would be Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Balder's Gate 1 and 2 and Planescape: Torment.

There have been plenty on Kickstarter but yes with nu-Bethesda and nu-Bioware you probably won't see an AAA RPG ever again.

Combat takes time to get used to. But once you realize how to game it, its pretty great. Much better than elderscrolls combat by any measure.

Endgame mage is probably the strongest, but earlier on is tough because of lack of mana. You'll probably have to invest into combat somewhat early on. Most go for the 60 dex 1 handed master sword early. Make the correct runes later, and mana manage properly and its pretty fun.

I'll let you in on a little secret and small reason as to why this game is amazing. Simply put, the lack of women. Much like The Witcher series Gothic is a male driven power fantasy. Sleep with prostitues? Check. Male protag? Check. Mostly male cast and humor? Check, check.
