Press F to pay respects, where can I get a cheap PS3?

Do the old fat systems die often?
>>
>>388749584
Did it actually go kaput, or is it just the hard drive?
>>
All fat systems are ticking time bombs. They use the least energy efficient chipsets and Sony cheaped out on thermal paste. If you want a PS3 to last, get a slim model. They generate up to 50% less heat and noise.

As to where to get a cheap PS3:
>eBay
>Craigslist
>Pawn shops
>Facebook selling listings
>>
My one YLOD'd for the 3rd time last week, but got it repaired again. I'm not letting it go.
>>
>>388749584
>Do the old fat systems die often?
Extremely often. I don't know how long you had yours but mine died very early on. Repeatedly.
>>
>>388749832
t. guy trying to monopolize the fat market so he can refurb and sit on them all then do a massive markup and trickle maneuver a few years down the road.

Everyone doing this is going to be made for life.
>>
Had mine since launch and it's still going strong
>>
>>388750078
who the fuck would want to buy a fat ps3 at a mass markup? they're already at low dogshit prices. they're on the verge of death by now. either the bluray drive motor is on its last legs or the thermal paste underneath the heatspreader is so crusty that it makes your mommas shit stained panties look lame.

Or you could not be a tech illiterate and just re-apply thermal paste.

My launch ps3 is still doing well. Gets a bit loud yet never gets hot.

Replace the thermal paste, if you cant do that your opinion doesn't matter.
>>
>>388749584
>My PS3 died today
YLOD?
>>
>>388750571
it's not just the thermal paste on the cell/rsx, it's also the the paste under the heat spreaders. besides your fat system will eventually die anyways because it's a fucking power hog that will kill the power supply inside.
>>
>>388750695
Yes it is.

Sony used cheap thermal paste but if you have good thermal paste then the system will probably be fine if you didnt use it much which was easy back in 2006-2010
>>
>>388751345
still would never recommend a fat ps3 to anybody unless you're a old console collector.

Nah, I got my first fat in at launch and it lasted for 5 or 6 years. I got my second pretty soon after during the PSN blackout and it's lasted ever since.

Slap a 500GB HDD in that bitch and you're good for a lifetime. My first one only died because I was retarded and kept it in a closed area at a party and it overheated.
>>
>>388751345
>if you didnt use it much which was easy back in 2006-2010
Wasn't easy for me. The PS3 replaced my PS2. In those 4 years I played at least a thousand hours of Phantasy Star Universe on it. Nevermind the hundred+ hours playing the .hack//G.U. series. And countless other PS2 games which were still coming out at the time.

Plus loads of PS3 shit. Hundreds of hours in Burnout Paradise. Loads into Pain. Folklore, Noby Noby Boy, PS Home, Yakuza 3, Motorstorm 1/2 and so many many others. Early PS3 stuff is horribly overlooked and forgotten (especially the digital-only stuff).

Then theres all the hours I spent using it as a music/videoplayer, and running folding@home...
>>
>>388751480
Either way the slim is best for cfw.

Fat is for ps2 disc compatibility and asthetics
>>
>>388749584
I've had 3 PS3s die on me, 2 fats and a slim.
>>
Slims are alright but if you play a lot make sure it's well ventilated. My GPU partially melted despite good ventilation because I used it for FFXIV. Super slims are decent despite being ugly and noisier than slims
>>
Go to your local mom and pop game store to support small businesses and take in that atmosphere. It wouldn't be around forever.
>>
>>388751859
The vast majority of fat models can't run PS2 games.
>>
>>388749584
>Do the old fat systems die often?
Very often. Not sure if it reaches RRoD levels but it has to be close
>>
>>388749768
It's an overheating issue
>>
>>388750672
It sounds like a wind turbine when you try and turn it on, so I'm pretty sure it's just overheating
>>
>>388753158
Fat PS3s are so old now that the cheap and sloppily applied thermal paste already dried up. So even if the system is dust free and well ventilated, the cpu and gpu can't transfer the waste heat to the heatsink properly which leads to overheating and possible system failure.
>>
>>388749584
I've seen plenty of fats die but I never seen super slims or the late model slims die.
>>
F

Never had a PS3 die on me, but I know your pain. Almost every PS2 I've ever owned suffered laser failures. Think it was 3 fat models, a slim my cat knocked over, and a fat model infested with german roaches when I left it at my parent's filthy house.
>>
>>388754417
No joke, roaches love PlayStation consoles. The interior is dark and warm. They have so many tiny vents to get inside and outside. Perfect for breeding many babies.
>>
>>388749584
There's some cheap ones for about 100 dolans on eBay
>>
>>388753518
Why are PS2's still doing fine? Do they not have "thermal paste".

I'm not too good at computer. Does this mean I should periodically re-apply thermal paste every few years to the desktop I built?
>>
F

I just cleaned the dust out of mine, reapplied new thermal paste, and put in a new hard drive. Its definitely running cooler. The first time in years that I've actually heard the fan kick down in speed. If you got YLOD you probably need a reballing unfortunately.
>>
>>388749880
Mine is still kickin' it. 60gb BC
>>
>>388754649
>>388754417

Same thing happened with my friend's DirectTV box. He shook it and they started running out.
>>
>>388754793
All computers that use up a considerable amount of power have thermal paste applied on the CPU. PS2s use less energy than PS3s, less energy consumption = less waste heat. The more waste heat, the more cooling and heat dissipation you need otherwise you overheat the thing.

Generally you should replace your thermal paste every 5 years in a desktop but usually by then people throw out the whole thing and buy a new PC. Fat PS3s are about a decade old now, imagine how crusty the paste is by now. Bad combination with PS3s big energy consumption.
>>
>>388755290
Yeah I've had my ps3 for probably 8 years.

Is there a tutorial on how to do this with the PS3?
>>
>>388755510
there's a gorillion step by step tutorials on youtube showing you how.
>>
>>388752991
Sounds like it could do with a clean and a system reset. The fact that it's the older model and it lasted this long is quite impressive.
>>
>>388755510
Just look up how to take a PS3 apart. When you remove the heat sink off the cpu/gpu, there's the paste. There's also paste under the heat spreader of the cpu/gpu that should be changed too but you have to be extremely careful otherwise you break your system.
>>
>>388755510
I have found this to be the best walkthrough. Systems vary but just organize the screws as you pull them out, take pictures of assembly, and put a small peas worth of thermal paste on the heatsinks - no need to spread, pressure will do the job. Be sure to run it a lot for a week or two after applying new.

lower power consumption means almost 0 overheating.

Remember that the Xbox360 and PS3 were too powerful for their times and really ran on untested cutting edge technology even better than the best PC hardware at launch. There's a reason why the things always broke down.
>>
>>388756773
Fat PS3s ran with a 90nm CPU and 90nm GPU.
For comparison, the latest slims run at 45nm and 40nm. It's like a 50% difference in energy consumption and heat generation.
>>
>>388757156
not to mention that fat ps3s had PS2 hardware inside for backwards compatibility so it had to power that too even if you weren't using it.
>>
>>388756446
they've made it so after so many years you have to re-confirm your email address.

Had a European launch ps3 and after a little over 3 years; it got the ylod. That's the timeframe when most of them got this issue. (plus/minus, depends how often you played or rather boot up the system which causes temperature fluctuations)

For some reason it got never the media attention Microsoft did with the rrod even though it was just as bad, maybe a little less prevalent and more predictable but still...
>>
>>388752293
True.

The 40/60GB 2006 launch ones can.

The rest of them used to be able to via emulation but sony disabled that.
>>
>>388758570
>For some reason it got never the media attention Microsoft did with the rrod even though it was just as bad
fat ps3 had like a 10% failure rate, original model 360 was over 50%.
>>
>>388758657
>>388752293
there's ps2 games on the psn store that play through a emulator and it works on all model ps3s.

if you got a custom firmware ps3, you can use that same ps2 classics emulator to load ps2 iso files. compatibility varies but some games work flawlessly like SSX Tricky which never released on the PSN store.
>>
Since there seems to be a couple of electrogeeks here I want to ask what's wrong with my ps3, when I insert a disc it starts making these jaggy sounds and then eventually pushes the disc out (halfway). Been like this for about a year now, mainly just want to know if I can fix it or not.
>>
I could reapply the thermal paste, but I don't have the tools to do so right now. I'll just drive to my local ps3 repair shop.
>>
>>388758819
>emulator
Big difference, fat PS3 natively played PS2 games off the disc.
>>
My launch 60GB ps3 is still kicking. New thermal paste and a 500GB HDD and im having fun playing persona 5.

Its wierd, I always do well with launch consoles.

I have a 360 arcade launch with no hmi and it works and thats my 3rd 360(first was a slim that overheats after 5 mins and a halo 3 360)
>>
>>388758570
360 got way more media attention because it was fucking destroying discs inside the dvd drive. any movement while the disc was in motion and it would fuck it up and microsoft were like "lol just buy another game copy"
>>
just get a 360
>>
>>388758657
The European fatties got either the emotion engine (ps2 cpu) or the graphic synthesiser (ps2 gpu) removed, can't remember which one. (to save costs, but still had to pay 599€)

Most PS2 games were partially emulated, unlike the first NA consoles which had also a bigger backwards compatible PS2 games library. But later even the yanks got the same European butchered bc until it was completely removed.

Very little people know that. Look it up.
>>
>>388759061
I already know that. But still the emulator works great for some games never released on PSN.

check list here:
http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List
>>
>>388759349
No I know what you are talking about but I thought that was the case for all fats past the 60GB releases.

Either way unless i'm wrong, sony disabled ps2 discs for every ps3 that didnt have any ps2 hardware correct? If not then at least the fats that relied on software emulation.
>>
>>388759579
you can still put in discs for 80gb fat ps3s, the slims and beyond are where they stopped the ps2 disc support.

if you have custom firmware, you can re-enable it and play the games through the official Sony PS2 classics emulator
>>
>>388758841
sounds like the thing inside the bluray drive that sets the disc down is broken or the motor is faulty. you would have to replace the drive.
>>
>>388749584
Is PS3 emulation a thing yet? There could be a day where it's exclusives won't be playable anymore. Saturns are also dying at an alarming rate.
>>
>>388760039
Yeah there's a emulator in development.

Also yes disc drives will all eventually die but thank god for custom firmware which lets you play any games including disc exclusives on a USB or hard drive.
>>
I'm considering getting a used PS3 fat.
I don't really like online games that much and don't care about achievements so I might as well install CFW.
Should I get one?
>>
>>388759349
I want to explain myself better.

The first PS3s got actual PS2 hardware in it. Yanks got both the cpu and gpu while the PAL launch fatties only had the CPU (I think) and had to be partially emulated.

When they removed bc (removing the actual ps2 hardware in the ps3) it became fully software emulated and you could only play the ps2 games which were/are on the psn store.

PS1 games were always completely software emulated on the ps3, even on the fat ones with ps2 hardware in it. Because unlike with the complex ps2 architecture, it is super easy to do since the ps1 hardware was so straightforward. That's why both slim models can still play the ps1 discs.
>>
>>388760913
Personally I wouldn't trust used consoles at all because who fucking knows what the previous owner has done with them. For all we know, that shit could have a roach nest inside of it.

I would aim for getting a slim PS3. Much more reliable and cooler/quieter. If you really want to play PS2 games then buy a real PS2. They sold over 150 million PS2s worldwide, you're bound to find some at rock bottom prices by now.
>>
>>388759816
>the slims and beyond are where they stopped the ps2 disc support.

That's not true. When they dropped the price of the 60GB model from 599 to 499 they removed the backwards compatibility. It was still a fat ps3 at that point in time. They didn't even begin to shrink the Cell processor. It started with the first slim, from 60nm to 45nm I think.
>>
>>388749584

>sold fat PS3 because it sounded like an incoming housefire
>bought "broken" Superslim for €20 because I had spare parts
>turns out only the software fucked up and reinstalling the firmware did the trick

My question is: Do Superslims fail a lot? Should I also replace thermal paste? I'm pretty much using it as a Bluray player only by now but I don't want it to die.
>>
>>388761954
you could still insert ps2 discs insid a 80gb ps3 and it will play. however compatability won't be perfect so games will either run or instantly crash.
>>
>>388760913
Get a slim for cfw as doing it on a fat may require you to soldier if your console stores its firmware on a NAND chip.

>>
I have 2 younger sisters who use mine for crash bandicoot and a couple others and they always leave it on when they're done. Fucking infuriating. Although I'm surprised the ps1 crash games even work on the slim PS3. I remember taking my fat PS3 apart about once a week to reseat the heatsink with a heat gun and they've got me fucked up if they think I'll come home and fix it for them once it dies
I love that my little sisters play video games, reliving crash with them is one of my fondest memories of the last year

this is why i cant buy into consoles. at least if a pc part dies you can always replace it because there is always gonna be parts available both new and used. with these consoles, eventually they are gonna die out and you are pretty much fucked. its already happening with the original xbox. shit like disc rot which to be fair wont be a real problem until years from now puts me off as well.
>>
>>388762908
my og xbox is more than a decade old and it still works. the disc drive is broken now because it's a given all mechanical parts wear out overtime, but with softmods you can play every single game on the xbox through a hard drive. something that's widely available everywhere
>>
>>388762679
A ps3 will do

Apart from the psp games which are optional, TOD, ACIT and Quest for Booty are only on ps3.

The HD trilogy & deadlock are available for ps3 but ive heard bad things.

I just then bought a used fat 60GB and then re-applied thermal paste and put in a new HDD.

Craigslist and Amazon. Search for slim models. Avoid fat and super slim.

Yes. They acyually have an even higher fail rate than the original model Xbox 360s, but it takes them years to actually fail.
I reaply wish Sony woukd just quit PSNow and do Backwards compatibility on PS4so this problem could be solved.
