I got my gaming PC in 2011 for $1500 including things I didn't actually need like a 1TB HDD which was big at the time, a new case and monitor that I didn't need and a sound card which is useless for games. The "core" PC needed for playing games was under 900$ It still plays new games on medium/low and I could easily buy a cheap graphics card and bump them up. I never pay more then $20 for games and I don't have to pay for online gaming or pay $80 for extra controllers. I have it hooked up to a 40" TV so it is also maximum comfy.
