You should also note that Shephard being deployed that late makes no sense. The whole point of Shephard not engaging scientists is because he never got the order to kill Black Mesa's personnel on sight. Thus, he would have been deployed pretty early, crashed and be unconscious when the HECU get the order to kill everyone on site, and stay unconscious for much longer so it still fits with Shephard getting to see Gordon go through the portal.

If the author of the video corrected that, it'd be quite good.

You can see on Blue-Shift the two soldiers commenting about how Shephard's team "didn't make it", which implies that he was one of the first ones of the HECU to arrive, but got taken down. I don't mean to imply HL2 was supposed to take away from the first game.

It's just Half-Life was released in a time when it' simplistic and shallow (by non-rpg and modern standards that is) story didn't need that much thinking. It was going for the very 90s "Super advanced science facility in the south-west US with heavy ties to government contracts for top secret military tech". The intro even makes light of the "just a tad too cold air conditioning" and uniformly suburban employee housing so closely tied to this trope. And it worked, it was a great success.

But Half-Life 2 released in a time when Half-Life already changed the game of FPS narratives, they couldn't get away with rehashing campy pulp sci fi tropes again. So they thought back to the first game, carried over some references (vortigaunts, the G-Man, Kleiner and Barney, Freeman and his HEV suit) ditched the setting and base for the game and instead focused on a cosmic horror approach.

I just replayed Half-Life today, and holy shit does the game turn to dicks at Surface Tension/Forget about Freeman. No wonder I didn't remember anything of the game between Questionable Ethics and Lambda Core, it's a horrible trudge through some of the worst map design in the series.
Forget about Xen, that's the real shitshow and it makes me want to never replay the game again.
