I've noticed something strange in games lately. They sometimes just drop a tonne of frames and then recover just as suddenly. Are there any benchmarks I can use to figure out which component is "giving out"?

Hmm, yeah probably. From your description I would recommend Kombuster to test CPU and GPU individually, Then, if you haven't found the issue, use Prime95 to stress-test your other components to see what gives when you poke at it.
