Are stories in video games important?
>>
Good videogames always blend a variety of elements, some more prominent than others. The important thing is that the mix is just right enough that it works for that game in particular.
>>
What I would consider the ideal in video game design is mechanics so thematic that they're essentially inseparable from "story" as they're a significant or even primary vehicle for worldbuilding. Moreover, I certainly don't play any games because I like pushing buttons but because they're conceptually appealing, and that's a concept very closely related to "story", especially if the game features a heavy degree of emergence.

the most important part of a GAME by far is the GAMEplay

The story is not important at all, look at Tetris, most people don't even know it has a story. Or Blackwake, no story.

Stories are an optional feature but pleasant if they're done correctly.

I would say that worldbuidling and lore are more important than the story. If a game goes after a strong story then they usually only add complementing features to that story(voice logs, hidden scrolls, letters, etc). But if a game has strong worldbuidling and lore then even if the story isn't your cup of tea you can still immerse yourself in other aspects of the world, this is a reason I love side quests as opposed to main story quests.

no theyre like story in porns, they are there just to make something have sense but they dont matter at all
>>
Story is like mayonnaise for a salad. Salad can benefit from mayonnaise, but most salads do just fine without it, and too much mayonnaise ruins it.

it highly depend of the genre and the player
I love when the story is very important in a game, yet mount & blade would be disgusting with a story
>>
the most important factor in a game is gameplay, then its replayability/lasting appeal and if its fun and not a convoluted repetitive boring mess, then graphics and soundtrack come together to create a mood/atmosphere and later the story comes, story is the least important thing in a game, like you can see in doom you dont need a story to make a game excellent to play, story is good if its done right to make you engaged but if you have a story like 99% of all those AAA games then those things are just ruinning ur game, by the end of the day game stories are on par with B/C even D movies, which means they all SUCK REALLY HARD

btw a game that benefited from a good story was wolfenstein new order, game already had a amazing gunplay, great soundtrack, good graphics and tons of replayability, that amazing story with such engaging characters made the game even better and its one of the few occasions that i didnt skip a cutscene, which is what i do 99% of the games i play

>Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important

It does have a story, though, it's just not a pre-determined one. All the things from lords reminiscing about battles you fought together (many of said details having zero mechanical relevance) to simple fact that there's a world map to provide context to battles (that, mechanically speaking, are the bulk of the game) play towards creating a compelling emergent narrative, and since they don't exist in a vacuum without developers deliberately putting those worldbuilding elements there, I think it would be foolish to discount them as not storytelling just because it doesn't work live in a movie. I for one play M&B for the story.
>>
no. you could remove the story of literally any game and it would instantly shoot up in quality 10000%

games should have 1 thing and 1 thing only in them. GAMEPLAY

there should be no graphics, no sound, no text of any kind i just want to PLAY THE GAME
