If I remember correctly, Sonic 2 was the same deal - the Special Stages got super hard in the middle before getting easier again near the end.

I'm struggling more with finding big rings than doing the stages.

I love Sonic 2 but holy shit, fuck those special stages. The number of times the game throws blind curves at you is amazing. Like how the hell are you supposed to react to some of those bombs if you dont know they're coming? And the fact that tails has the reflexes of a geriatric old man makes them even more infuriating.
