Imagine Xbox as a brand having two holders - MS and Nintendo. Both companies add something from themselves. MS has great infrastructure & R&D. Nintendo has not only IPs but also great game designers that know how to make games feel great.

Nintendo can have a part on the hardware as well.
First, their D-PAD, Microsoft just can't into d-pads.
Secondly negotiating components for the system.
They're absolutely monstrous at finding cheap components and getting em for even cheaper, and even with microsoft dictating the specs, nintendo probably can get 50 dollars off the price microsoft would get.
