There's one basic problem with topdown urban games and that's you being unable to see with enough time what's in front of you when riding fast.

In a modern GTA, you can go through a city at 200+kmph without hitting a thing if you have fast reflexes. In a classic GTA, you crash against stuff.

Maybe they should use on-screen indicators of off-screen stuff, like in some modern shooters there are indicators if there's a nearby grenade or something like that. It would tell you where the vehicles your character should be able to see (but you, as a player with a topdown view, can't) are.

Only a retard would ask that. It's sluggish and imprecise, especially without first person view. The lack of strafing makes it even worse. GTA 1 and 2 are borderline unplayable solely due to the shitty controls.
