First half of the game is fucking amazing, but the second half has certain downfalls:

>mirage saloon way too short
>oil ocean, fucking why
>lava reef is actually pretty cool
>metallic madness bosses are tedious/easy
>titanic monarch FUCKING WHY
It also feels like so much of the game is unfinished, like the boss rush at the end

it's a tad too short in spots (stardust speedway drastically needed a boost, we needed more actual platforming in MSZ1 rather than just that tiny train segment)
boss design tries harder than basically all of the other 2D sonic bosses, but isn't actually too much better overall
Sega went and snuck in Denuvo and tried to hide it
it's probably a bit too easy compared to S&K

it's pretty good though
really, I don't dislike any of the Mania stages much (maybe CPZ2's layout is a bit annoying, but I might be biased after losing miserably in multiplayer in it whenever we played that stage, and Press Garden definitely felt pretty off all around)

My single favorite thing so far is the Heavy Shinobi boss using so many sound effects from Revenge of Shinobi. That game was my childhood. I freaked the fuck out and had to pause the game when I heard those sounds.

It's a nice and fun game, but there are certainly a bunch of issues in level design, boss design and physics.

Also you can feel that the devs come from the Sonic hackin community, but not always in a good way.

Missing stage transitions make the story disjointed/incomprehensible, difficulty curve is all over the place as is the pacing, final bosses are underwhelming.

It's still pretty fucking great but it's no S3&K. Now that is a perfect game, if you don't consider it cheating since it's actually 2 games.

If you're talking about the checkpoint bonus stages, they're the same speed as before.

The fact that you MUST turn them all into rings and get every single ring to get a gold medal means you'll be spending much more time in each stage now, making them go faster than you're used to from S3&K, where you likely skipped the rings on the harder ones.

I bet you 100 rings the original intent was to have a HBH boss fight at the end of each of the 4 segments of Titanic Monarch Act 2. There's even pictures of them in the background in the hub, with each one corresponding to one path.

I guess maybe they figured the level would just be way too long that way.
