barney, eli vance and dr. kleiner all survived the black mesa incident and knew freeman
in fact, all three of them are based on generic character models from the first game (although barney ended up getting his own expansion)
last time freeman was seen, he was going into a portal to an alien world and disappeared for like 20 years
him surviving and coming back (without having aged a single day) is kind of a big deal

explain
>>

Because Opposing Force isn't cannon. Also, G-man shenanigans.
>>
>>388681095
Although its stated that escapees that aren't Gman protected (Alyx, Gordon, Adrian, probably Eli too) were all hunted down and murdered by the government, Barney wasn't associated with Gman at all and he just drove the fuck out with some other scientists, thus it's not impossible that more (out of the thousands of Black Mesa employees) got out

Gordon was the one who kicked it all off, and he saved a TON of peoples' lives on his way through BMRF especially with the way he basically carved a path straight through soldiers and aliens which means people he didn't even directly save would have been able to make their way out of the facility just because the path is clear and there's less soldiers locking the place down. To the survivors of Black Mesa, many of not most would owe everything to what Gordon did, so his legend would have probably been passed between those who stayed in contact. Not to mention his actions had an irreparable effect on the entire world as a whole

Gman was interested in him from the beginning. Did you pay attention to the intro? He was cultivated by Gman just like Gordon was, and kept around because he's an unstoppable force of death.

Barney is the only protag who survived Black Mesa entirely through his own merit alone. AND he survived the government cleanup squads that went after the rest of the survivors too

I'm not. Just replayed them back to back. Longer, more varied, better level design and much more natural progression. OpFor's idea of progression and environmental puzzles is shooting the powerbox above the electrified water or escorting the medic to the engineer then walking the engineer to the door to go on.

OpFor is godlike, but gearbox did not make a better shooter than valve

I just started OpFor, how come the military was looking for Freeman specifically? One of the soldiers was bullying a scientist and demanding him for Freeman's current location.

>>388682620
oh and not to mention its plot setup. HL starts as trying to escape but slowly becomes clear scientists need you at lamda complex, then on the way you do a couple things to set up their plan, finally arrive and realize what the interdimensional horror is and go kill it. OpFor is confused, you're just trying to escape the whole time and then you encounter a security guard in a warehouse who tells you theres a huge monster downstairs. You fight it and it ends.

Its very odd and abrupt like they ran out of time

Blue shift. They also updated the first-person and third-person gun models. I can't remember 100%, but I'm pretty sure it carried over to Opposing Force.

Back in the day, you'd have to copy them over to your HL1 folder and replace the defaults with the new ones you got from Blue Shift. I think they normalized it once Steam came out, provided you had a Blue Shift key. The funny thing was that Blue Shift didn't come out on Steam until like '05 or '06, but OpForce was on there from the start.

He wasn't at first but as the game goes on he becomes enamored by Shephard's ability to adapt and survive. It's the same reason he takes an interest in Gordon.

They're incredible people that can alter history if put at the right moment. Humanity is just a pawn between 2 otherworldly forces, Gman works for one, the combine are the other. Humanity is just part of a proxy war for these two societies and people like Gordon and Shephard can further enable it.

They don't care, they made it up as they went along and don't even bother going back to make sure dialogue matches their own game history. They make it up as they go along. The series as a whole is basically cool ideas strung together and loosely related to each other. They had a cool idea for a game about escaping a research facility during an alien invasion. That was Half-Life. They had a cool idea about fighting for the resistance in a world where humanity had fought and lost against aliens decades ago, that was Half-Life 2. They had a cool idea for a puzzle game involving portals, that was Portal. They're technically in the same setting and share continuity, but there's not much in the way of real relations.

You can if it's not just a "hit g to spam grenades for easy kills" button. Make it still a weapon, with a hotkey to temporarily switch to it. Less of a hassle to use, doesn't change anything for people who don't like it. Only problem is kids will think the button doesn't work and whine about it.

Obligatory elevator holdout fight, the hospital part, Alyx being a useful and non-annoying sidekick, Valve finally figuring out the proper amount of rubble and debris and gravity gun-able objects to sprinkle around so it's an actually viable weapon instead of a glorified puzzle solver, it's tight, fast paced, short enough that it never drags (except maybe the GO AND GRAB ANOTHER GROUP, GORDON part) and is just overall great across the board. this thread is the biggest clusterfuck of retards i've ever seen in a thread on /v/. stfu and go play hl1

Hl2 and episodes never had the same effect on me as Hl1 did. The story was weaker, more bizarre and felt more scripted. HL2 told the story as you were playing. So many HL2 moments were just standing around waiting for scripted animations to finish.

At most I remember in HL1 having to wait for scientists to open doors, but they explained things pretty quickly as it was a survival situation.
>>
How much time elapsed between the end of HL1 and the Seven Hour War? Judging by the end cinematic where G-man seems to be implying there was a full-scale invasion of Xen by humanity, and that Op4 and BS finish a while after HL1, it's at least not immediate, but I had the impression it was pretty soon after.

Also since you don't seem to see anyone younger than Alyx, that would either imply the suppression field has been in effect for quite some time or that Valve got lazy with the modeling and didn't want to put in kids.

>>
>>388695879
>How the fuck does it take like 2 years to make a few levels that have cooky alien shit
The first part of the game took almost a decade. Xen is supposed to be much larger and better done than it was in the first game.

>>388696016
It's been slower for a while now. I think a lot of people were waiting for Source 2 and it just didn't happen.
>>
>>388696016
Mods for newer games slowed down because of the amount of work it takes to make something look acceptable these days. Doom still has a pretty active modding scene because of how easy it is.

Yes, this is correct. Half Life 2 IS a great game, but it's not because of the story. The story is mostly a mishmash of various sci-fi tropes, vaguely connected to Half Life 1. What makes HL2 great is its extremely well-executed and highly atmospheric game world. Wandering through the overrun city blocks, eerie industrial zones, ruined villages, and rural areas of HL2's game world is an amazing experience. The mood is thick and impressive. The opponents are brutal and menacing. The plot... is more or less just a contrivance that moves you through this world, and the friendly characters are more or less just props there to give exposition and fawn over you.
Still one of the all-time great games, though. I don't think the game's creators should be faulted too much. What they pulled off is already such an impressive achievement that it would be asking for a real artistic miracle to expect them to have also succeeded on the level of plot and character.

they were brainwashed, controlled by the nihilant via these collars they had to wear. you can even see one of the vorts wearing such a hl1 collar in nova prospect as he gets his brain zapped, that model also has some more implant looking things on it, suggesting that the vortigaunt troops from hl1 were more like the trans human soldiers from hl2, brain washed, surgically altered and conditioned to serve the combine

The hype for half life 3 was way too high, even if it was just a 5 minute tech demo it would have sold more than anything, half life is absolute kino

Half Life > Portal > Half Life 2 > Episode 1 > Episode 2 > Episode 3 > Portal 2

This is the canon order, right? Does anyone know where the Portal comic fits into the timeline? I've been wanting to go throught the Black Mesa universe in it's canon order. Also, any other canon material in this universe I should know about?
>>
It's pretty well known at this point Half Life has god awful writing that results into massive logical plotholes. If you played 1, 2, and all the DLC/episodes, you'd realize this. However, it does a decent enough job to have some storyline going. Its story is the kind that you just take at face value, the deeper you deep, the more holes you see.

Eli is the guy Gman is talking to, and also the guy you see right after resonance cascade, the one who opens door for you.

portal 2 happened around the timeline of hl2 ep2, maybe even at the same time, since the combine find the borealis in the end, and learn about the existence and location of the enrichment center. in the portal coop campaign you play a mission helping glados to activate her external sensors, and on the radar screen you can see several incoming blips as the combine look for the research facility.

If it wasn't Gordon then it would've been someone else in the test chamber, shit would've still gone down. Except chances are, nobody would've made it out of Black Mesa and the initial shitshow would've never been contained. Gordon made the best out of a bad hand.

Why was Alyx even there to begin with? Black Mesa was fucking top secret facility that developed weapons for government, it was actually so secret that once shit went down every single scientist who worked there was ordered for extermination, not to mention hazards everywhere and shit. Was it "bring your daughter to work day"? On the day that fucking Resonance Cascade experiment was to be carried out?

I think that's the core issue. Source is just about as far in terms of fidelity as I think you can ask a fully hobbyist team to get, and even that's pushing it a bit. Goldsource, on top of being comfy as fuck, sets a pretty low bar in terms of model detail and texture quality. Everything's an approximation to begin with, which lessens the burden.

HL2 is a brilliant game but the plot is largely a mishmash of sci-fi cliches and pandering.
Doomgates to other dimensions opened and aliens invaded.
You are the savior of the entire world. Everyone treats you as a hero, including this hot girl who makes doe eyes at you all the time.
Everyone important in the world is part of a small group of friends and relatives.
I'll give it props for the interesting treatment of collaborators, though - the humans who work with the aliens. That adds a bit of a genuine moral gray zone and has authentic real-world sort of menace.

>>388701978
The most interesting storytelling in Half-Life 2 is at the periphery. It's the way the world is built, the subtle hints in the art direction and mechanical design, that sort of thing. The way that the Combine's heavy attack aircraft and transport ships are clearly organic beings with parts grafted on. The way that human concepts of government and social structure have been co-opted to serve the needs of the invading force. The main storyline is probably the least interesting part of the setting.

Considering those are days it has been AT LEAST 2700 years.
>>
>>388703158
Pretty much. The plot exists to provide context to setpieces and levels. To give you a reason to be going from place to place and to show off the still fairly impressive facial animation technology. Outside of that it's nothing to write home about. It's well executed but it's nothing special.
>>
>>388702650
>>388703158
It's really just Freeman reacting to shit happening around him until they go fuck up the citadel
The plot probably suffered when they cut huge sections during the endless beta period. Valve's huge focus on gameplay back then meant they would have picked sections for interesting gameplay rather than story

They didn't write it 'as they went along', they had a good idea of what kind of story they wanted at the very beginning but found that it was too cinematic and too politically incorrect for its time.

This wasn't the only game of its time to do this. Halo 2 had beheading scenes of heretic aliens cut out because it became "too real" according to the devs.

>too politically incorrect for its time

the original story included things like child slavery not just implied but also seen in game, and was meant to be a lot scarier. Don't think there was any kind of suppression field, and there was also supposed to be a 'manhack arcade' where citizens kill fugitives using remote controlled manhacks for entertainment- completely oblivious to the fact that they're controlling real manhacks.

This was supposed to be the first chapter.

also it was meant to give a much clearer 'stalker + psychopass' vibe, as everyone even in the cities needed gas masks and at the very beginning of the game you were supposed to see the city 17 wall and almost immediately after a train getting attacked by gargantua and those two annoying fuckers from HL1 (the ones that spit acid and the other ones that have that ground pound) as the train enters city 17.

Only difference I can think of that makes it less desolate is the change from eastern euro architecture to US architecture, think new york apocalypse

Yeah i know, you don't have the brain power to come up with anything, especially to think of ways to solidify the argument you started. You contributed absolutely nothing to this thread, while i dislike anon's shilling videos, he still contributed something relevant to the topic at hand.

>witnessed by only a handful of people
>never heard of since for at least 15 years years
>said handful of people assume that he must totally be alive despite the lack of any evidence for over 15 years
>shill this story to everyone they meet for over 15 years
>the entire human populace buys into this tale with no questions or skepticism
>believe that this one person can single-handedly do what the entire human race united could not
>original witnessess spend every waking moment of those 15-20 years prepared for the hero's reappearance at any time in any place
>so much so that they one day instantly recognize his face from a blurry CCTV feed and leap into action to save him
You can ask your audience to believe in the impossible, but NOT the implausible...

It was a bit messy, but that totally added to the alternate dimension feeling.
If done-over today, they might go for one of those Marvel trips they've been doing in the movies instead (Ant Man, Dr Strange), which can be interesting if it's turned into some form of gameplay (think Shattered Horizon meets PixelJunk Eden).

also in the Xen levels they literally realize you're there to kill the Nihilanth which would free them so they never attack you when there aren't any floating Controllers around

That's a blatant lie, you fight vorties alien grunts, and all the other aliens constantly. There may be like one or two vorties that ignore you.
>>
>>388723373
>In Xen, Gordon comes across a number of Vortigaunts working in the Mines which, despite being aware of his presence, are not aggressive towards him unless attacked first or they become startled by nearby gunfire. They do, however, resume their normal hostile behavior while in the presence of Alien Controllers. Here, they are able to heal themselves by using Healing Chambers if they become injured.

Why were the Black Ops called in to kill the remaining HECU team anyway?

The ones who boarded the helicopters already made it out? Why do they care if the ones left behind are stranded in Black Mesa? It's not like there weren't plenty of marines already unaccounted for who weren't silenced?

what's the point, might as well say all his videos are fake too and he just scripted them himself and none of the were from Valve.
>>
>>388724679
notarget only works until you shoot the npc in question, have you ever used the command?
only ai_disable completely freezes npc's, and that's a source command.

>>388725583
i'm not that anon but, notarget only works until you trigger an enemies combat response. It's used for enemies that have their back to you, and such, but once you shoot one of the enemies, the command get's overwritten. Now if you use it in console, the overwrite only works on the npc you shot.

You've never played HL1, those vortigaunts never attack until you attack them first, block one in totally or wait around for several minutes.
>>
>>388730086
Yahtzee is a legit retard though. He despises multiplayer because playing against other people is too hard, whined about lack of difficulty in modern games only to call demon's souls shit when it came out before doing a 180 with dark souls.

>I completely agree. The little details, worldbuilding, mood/atmosphere and moral gray zones are very interesting. The main plot line isn't.
It's true of vidya in general and every other medium. Even the most lit literature has either banal or over-the-top main plotlines.
"Complex" convoluted plots is what you get from a song of fire and ice. The Iliad and Don Quixote are straightforward. I don't know if there are five book masterpieces with complex plots (War and Peace, what else?)
