Gordon did all the heavy lifting anyways hes the one whos the fucking killing machine. If anything he works harder with Alyx with him.

It seems totally against G-mans best interest to ditch him.

GMan has no special interest in Gordon, it's just that Gordon was very competent in the few events that GMan was involved in too. Just like Shepard during the events of Black Mesa. He wasn't special either, he just did a good job mopping up and was competent.
But in EP3 Alyx is the one who shows more competence than Gordon, proving herself by making a heavy choice like killing Judith and sending herself and Gordon on a suicide mission into the Combine. At that point she's the one more important as a pawn to the GMan, because she's not afraid to do what needs to be done when it needs to happen and is willing to make sacrifices. At that point Gordon just turns into a side character for GMan.

It's entirely possibly it was weakened by distance but still strong enough to stop him grabbing Gordon. Or, he could have been physically appearing in front of gordon, rather than frozen time talk things he does. We know very little about how their powers, at all.

This was planned out at least 2007, likely earlier. That's well before the bandwagon.

That's not bandwagoning either. Having a minority character isn't necessarily just pandering, especially when it's playing as an existing character who's already shown themselves to be competent.
