I don't mind the ugly Gen 3 art as much as I do the "music". The filler is bad as well.

Thank you! I'm so tired of some people here who just shit on older graphics just because they don't like it. Fire Red graphics were okay but I just simply prefer the original's graphics.

There's like a couple tracks in ORAS that sound anywhere near as ambitious as the previous remake soundtracks, and many tracks outright scrap parts of the original compositions and sound way flatter as a result. The Marine Museum is on the better part of the scale.

Then you have shit like this.

Dunno, while I am largely annoyed by mindless genwunners, I do like the general down to earth feel of Kanto. It all seems rather believable, and thus somewhat suitable to a childhood adventure.

I'm sorta rambling. But let me try to make an actual point: Kanto, more than any other region, seems to be designed to be an adventure game map. Sure, it is not entirely non-linear, but you get to make some choices where to go next at certain points, and you have to progress the game by exploring, atleast more than in other games of the series. Remember how you have to go out of your way to find HM Surf and Strenght, despite them being crucial to completing the game? In Kanto, HMs felt more like powerups in a Metroid game. In most other regions there would be a roadblock, and then the game would hand you the key to that roadblock in the form of an HM, so the HM wasn't rewarding to find.
This isn't anything amazing in Kanto, but it is a nice touch, and of all the regions, I feel Kanto has the most amount of "game design".

I know it might've felt like it, but that's impossible. Gold/Silver came out in Japan at the very end of 1999, and everywhere else in at least 2000. Crystal was about a year later for everyone. Childhood memories tend to blur together like that.

gen 1+2 graphics are objectively shit
you only like them because your nostalgia goggles are fused to your eyes

I will never understand why they won't make a difficult Pokemon game that is more adventurous and the battles difficult than the kid shit that they still churn out that follows the same tired fucking formula. Other Pokemon IPs are good and show they can make good games that aren't the boring schlock that they still make. Sun and Moon was really bad.

I never played gen 2, but the music still makes me nostalgic as fuck, especially azalea town. Goes to show how great the compositions were, especially for a gb game.

There was a lot of water in Gen3, but to be fair it was completely offset and then some by giving you the pokemon equivalent of a rocket-jetski for the surf animation. The only thing actually wrong with the water was the same thing that always has been and always will be wrong with caves and grass too (and not specific to Gen3 at all): the fucking random encounter rate.

On that note I'm baffled by how Gen3 gets so much shit for all the water when the pure cancer came in Gen4 with the SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW battle system and god help your fucking soul if the area had ambient weather you'd be there for one metric eternity just to make it ten steps.

Ahhhhh shit. Now I have to go play some Gen 2. Emulated, unfortunately. Maybe one of these days I'll hit up the local retro-games store and buy a GBC and a copy of Silver.

I absolutely loved the Time/Date Day/Night system in Gen 2 and every game that doesn't utilize it is in my honest opinion a step behind it. Couldn't believe they got rid of it in fucking Ruby and Saphire.

This being said, while I prefer the aesthetics and stylings of Silver/Gold over SS/HG I think SS/HG are the better games and are a necessity in a DS gamer's collection.

the other game was about fighting demons or death gods or something (it was a sequel iirc) and you meet this god lady who can join your party, you get to a point in the game where enemies refuse to fight you unless she is in your party so you can not advance, her story line takes over and is op compared to people i your party

Play randomizer nuzlocke version.

You walk into grass on route 1, literally anything can pop out, and whatever it is you have to catch it and fight with it whether you love it or not. If it faints it's gone forever.
>>
>>388680636
Like, as in if you knock out a Beedrill instead of catching it, you can never get another Beedrill?

Sounds interesting, but I'm not too keen on changing the experience of Silver. Silver runs deep for me, it was my first Pokemon game and I'm a big nostalgia fag about it. Would welcome something to make the game more difficult in terms of enemy levels and the like though. Still, Silver and SS was a LOT harder than fucking X/Y turned out to be. The Elite Four in X/Y were pushovers.

Gen 2's OW wasn't much better and you have as big nostalgiagoggles as they do there, but the in battle gen 2 sprites look great and hold up even today
>>
>>388680967
The rules are every time you walk into a new route, you have one chance to catch a pokemon. You are only allowed to catch the pokemon you first meet, so if you mess up and kill it or run out of pokeballs, that means you have to push through to the next route for a new chance.

Nuzlocke is horribly hard, but be glad because bad things need to happen to you in order for you to judge your own happiness.

Suddenly every gym is a massive challenge again, and getting that badge is so, so satisfying.

Randomizer is really not a big change to the main game play of Silver. All that changes is that all of the pokemon you encounter in the wild are scrambled, but they can be scrambled according to tiers - route 1 will still have very early level pokemon, just not only the boring usual (hoot hoot, the ferret thing, ect.)

1). Download the randomizer
2). Download the ROM of whichever pokemon game
3). Select the settings you want, which are all explained, easy to understand
4). Select save, the ROM is now randomised
5).load into whatever Emulator and play
You'd have to follow the nuzlocke rules yourself, but that's super easy too.

Because for as much as it has problems, and there are problems, it's the first game in a long time that really tried to shake up the formula. There are boss Pokemon now. Not just trainers who's Pokemon or fed a couple more rare candies than normal. Hm slaves are finally gone and thank Christ in heaven for that because hm's were the worst. Even though I don't like that the MCs Quest got put on the back burner Lillie and gladion were the strongest Pokemon characters in a long time as far as what their motives were and what they were willing to do to get it. As our team skull who's the first evil team in forever who weren't looking to take over the world for some stupid reason and arent feared by the populace despite being capable of being annihilated by 10 year olds.

Pokemon Sun Moon did plenty of things right. That's why a lot of people like them. It's just that they also did a lot of things wrong like get rid of PSS for the stupid ass battle tower and the million billion cutscenes and how obvious it is that you're being railroaded across a certain path. Also being able to cure off status ailments outside of battle. I know what they were going for but that reduces planning for entering a new area and Pokemon already has a little planning as it is.
>>
>>388679671
>Sun and Moon was really bad.
Even worse when you consider that it was supposed to be the 20th anniversary celebration of the franchise.
Shit was so bad I downloaded RPG Maker and Pokemon Essentials to try and make my own game instead.
>>
>>388681764
I did a Nuzlock challenge once. Some weird shit starts happening when you do those types of playthroughs. For me I started Charmeleon only for him to die halfway through the adventure. My heart sink through the floor but I did continue to challenge. You know who ended up being my MVP? Fearow. There has never been an instance outside of that run where I voluntarily used Fearow.
>>
>>388680617
are you talking about Masafumi Nukita? I can't find much about his other games and would be interested to read about what you're talking about

Nah, it's 2D. The sprites are made using images of the 3D world models from directly above though, essentially turning the pseudo 3D style of the DS games into a 2D tileset.
>>
>>388680967
As an alternative to a Nuzlocke run, there are romhacks out there that make the game more difficult. They're very well done and don't make it hell mode but it's not a cake walk either.

I don't even think the M&L remake looks bad, but who the fuck asked for it? Why is it necessary?
>>
Not exactly remakes, but I hate how Gen V zooms in on the sprites so much, both in the overworld and in-battle. I can't appreciate the supposed beauty of Skyarrow if the game keeps focusing on a low-res backsprite of Hilda, nor can I enjoy battles with them moving around like puppets all the time. I'd take static sprites over the unnatural movements of BW sprites.
Doesn't help that it started almost all the problems modern Pokemon games have, but everyone ignores it by saying BW/BW2 did it better or by claiming the BW2 postgame negates every other negative aspect
>>
>>388669915

Good post.

I want there to be an option to turn off the Pokemon-Amie boosts like increased evasion, auto-Focus Band and randomly shaking off status effects. I'd love to pet and brush my Pokemon and take part in these things that obviously boost the roleplaying aspect of the games, but the fact that doing so makes the battles even easier kills the chances of me ever touching that shit.

Also related to the roleplaying aspect, although Lillie and her family's story weren't terrible or anything, I found it a little dumb that as you put it, the player's quest got sidelined at times and there didn't seem to be a good reason for the player to always indulge in hanging out with Lillie. It's okay if my character is written as a goody-two-shoes who's going to protect other people from evil teams and what have you, but several times I noticed you go along with NPCs just because even if it has nothing to do with your primary motivation, the Island Challenge, or even just, say, Alola sightseeing. The series pushes journeying across the land to see and experience various sides of the world as a theme, but it sorta loses some of the meaning if you're always forced into things.

>I hate doing off-game restrictions.
To be fair, keeping the gen6/7 Exp Share on is more or less choosing to set the difficulty to "baby" instead of the usual "easy".

I like restricting myself only by shaving off the excess experience points. Only fights with NPC trainers allowed, or wild Pokemon that are so fast you can't run away from them easily. Since I'm already naturally indecisive about my team composition and keep swapping monsters around, it means I might reach the end of the game with a team of lv30-40s, and that means there's at least a chance for the NPCs to put up a bit of a fight.

Same thing goes for HeartGold and SoulSilver. I would like Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire but they got it some of the features so I still play Emerald even though I don't hate the other two. With that said some of the new features are hit-and-miss. Gen 1 desperately needs a real post game. Kanto has no identity. Episode Delta, while I respect the attempt, is borderline fanfiction.

I'm of the opinion that Canto was run by mad scientist. ShinyGold or whatever was great and satisfied my gen2 craving until HGSS came out. That's my only experience with fan remakes though, so I guess I'll go with liking them.
Provided they don't do anything stupidly drastic like changing Viridian Forest to Viridian Desert or shit like that I think I'd prefer them over a straight remake. New maps would be cool, especially in a region like Kanto that seems woefully under-designed compared to newer regions due to the mapping limitations of the original games.

for some reason i find remakes like this very ugly, not just aesthetically but also, weirdly, morally. It's like they just figured that sprucing up the tech a bit and putting in generic coloration makes it look "better" and they didn't really pay much attention to its artistic look. Its why the all stars version of SMB also kind of soured me. These remakes look cheap and ugly and devoid of inspiration.

I think the problem with remix is that they don't take advantage of the leap in technology like they should. What I mean is they didn't have the capability to do the things they did in red and blue that they did in Emerald. So Emerald comes along and you think red and blue would get more than just a cosmetic facelift. I mean the Cosmetic facelift is important but what about more features. Scenarios that maybe couldn't fit in the game before. I mean Emerald has a scenario where you break up a fight between two literal Titans by getting a space dragon to play Mommy. You think red and blue can have a scenario different from just kicking Team Rocket out of Japanese MetLife again. Except they don't, aside for Mount Ember FireRed and LeafGreen are almost one to one with red and blue except with prettier graphics and an updated battle system. Which is cool if you never play red and blue before, but if you did then there's no reason really for you to play this game because you've done it all before. Here's an idea, how about the next time you remake a Pokemon game use the same region but jump forward and time. Maybe change out the gym leaders or expand the town's a little bit. I assume the country would change at least a little within a decade. Maybe a new evil team showed up? Or a new cave was discovered? Just something where I'm not walking the exact same steps that I walked 10 years ago.
>>
All the Pokemon remakes don't really catch the feeling of the originals visually. FRLG comes the closest, but the protagonist redesigns clearly have more RSE design influence than every other updated trainer design and since you'll be seeing them the most it hampers things.

ORAS is the only one that really feels like it acknowledges this and embraces it. It kinda works, except where they recycle XY assets that don't mesh with the new Hoenn look or needed to be tweaked already in XY but remain unfixed.

Like Silph Co invented the teleporters that saffron gym uses. So maybe they found a way to spread that technology to the other cities. But maybe the player character has to go on a mission to the power plant to connect some thingamabob to whatever is needed to turn it on. And then this can function as a replacement for hm2. Instead of forcing you to put a fly Pokemon on your team you can use the teleporters to jump from City to City. It works because you can get it off until the second half of the game when you actually make it to Saffron City and Silph Co. And you can maybe make it so you have to get a city key to unlock each City's teleporter so you can't teleport to cities you haven't been to yet. Also Silph Co invented the goggles that let you see ghosts. Maybe something can be done with that? Maybe there's an evil team that uses psychics and ghosts to affect trainers and Pokemon and you use the goggles to help in some way. I only bring that up because I always found it weird that you never needed the goggles again in any other game even though you have to jump through hoops to get it. I'm sure with time and ingenuity you can come up with a lot of things that can make the game easier in and out of battle. Like how in Gentoo they had a machine that can make Pokemon angrier with just sound waves. So instead of the boost items maybe you have some sort of Soundwave thing that can make your Pokemon more aggressive and they hit harder but they take more damage due to being reckless or more susceptible to confusion. I mean you'd have to work with it to balance it, these are just things coming off the top of my head. Maybe whatever evil team you fight is using this kind of tech stolen from Silph to make Pokemon that were normally weak and make them stronger like the totem Pokemon. So you fight a guy who can use his whatever machine to give his Pokemon higher crit rates without setting up.

She's a huge fucking shit. Her character would almost work if they straight up put her backstory in the game, maybe make it so there's actually a Draconid village in Meteor Falls to learn about their culture and her circumstances instead of barely alluding to it, but nah, too much work. Let the fans read interviews. Even then she'd still be extremely abrasive and it would just become a full on idiot plot.

She made a good reaction image, though.

>>388680617
It was a friend of his who did said character. It was one in Oreshika 2, I think Nueko was the character's name? They even patched that game to make her less important the backlash was so big.

Nukita was one of the writers for the Pokedex entries in SM, which is why you have stuff like Lucario's entries treating it like a pack predator or shit like Gengar's entry which is just embarrassing.

>Should you feel yourself attacked by a sudden chill, it is evidence of an approaching Gengar. There is no escaping it. Give up.

I also theorize him suddenly leaving Game Freak for a job at Sega during SM's development might be why the game doesn't have a National Pokedex, since Game Freak wanted new entries for every single Pokemon.

Fuchsia City also has the Safari Zone so maybe over time the city evolved to be kind of a national park. I mean technically speaking the park is already there, they have a Kabuto right next to the PokeMart along with a few others on display. Maybe Pewter City is some kind of Museum or place of History. And they use the teleporters to gather things from the seafoam Island since seafoam Island is totally uninhabited and yet right around the corner from a major gym. Viridian City seems like it should be more important considering it's at the front door of the Indigo League, the centerpiece of TWO different countries. I'm just throwing ideas off rapid fire.

While that's a valid complain I don't think that undermines the good on the games since they where created with "the problems" in mind, sure BW are linear but they still let you explore surrounding areas to gyms and have side dungeons to explore. That's like putting down OoT because it started all the bad trends on zelda.

If you actually do decide to do it I'll be first in line to play it. Mainly because as much as I bitch on gen 1 I actually like it a lot and I don't know how much of that has to do with nostalgia. If I had to guess what your mission would be maybe it wouldn't be collecting badges but routing the evil team out of Kanto. After all a lot of the scientist in Silph Co were in League with Team Rocket when you stormed it. Maybe one of them with mad at Silph Co for some reason and split off. Or maybe they was always on Team Rockets payroll and in an effort to get power quickly he ignored safety standards. Which while he can make some technology like the sound thingy that made the Red Gyarados or Mewtwo it also makes him a danger to everyone around him. Maybe instead of collecting the badges you just route the high-ranking members of whatever his team is from each City. For example to explain why the teleporters aren't working when you start the adventure you can say that something he made put the ghost in Lavender Town in a huff which is made it impossible to access the power plant. So first you have to get access to the scope lens from somewhere. And then you have to climb lavender Tower. Except the sound wave thing, or maybe some other thing like you made the spirits mad or something, has made the Pokemon there especially dangerous. So it culminates with a boss Pokemon that has some passive buff. Like haunters pokedex entry says it enjoys eating dreams so maybe every X number of turns it makes your Pokemon drowsy. And either you can use your own sound wave thingy to increase your own Pokemons aggression that makes it more powerful and less susceptible to sleep but it takes more damage, utilize berries, or emphasize switching in order to beat the challenge. And beating the area here unlocks the way to the power plant that may have opened up over the years. But then some other challenge awaits there. I'm sure you could come up with something way better than me.

I started it back when rumors started going around about 20th anniversary remakes of Red and Blue; figured I'd try my hand at my own take on them. Dropped it due to other shit getting in the way at the time, but this thread's rekindled my drive to work on it.
Pallet Town and Route 22 are the only areas I'm content with so far; really don't like what I did with Viridian City and Route 1 feels too short. First optional area will be Viridian Lake, which will mostly be a hangout spot for NPCs, but after getting whatever item I replace Surf with you'll gain access to some grass with a rare chance of encountering Squirtle.
Berries were an obvious choice for an addition, but another thing I hope to implement is the PokeGear from GSC. Tying into the phone in that, I'll be adding relationship values for major NPCs (gym leaders, E4, Prof Oak, etc) and getting them to certain points will unlock events to do with those characters and reward items like evolution stones, hold items, and eggs of rare Pokemon.
>>
>>388691815
Gen 4, while the second special split was very needed, didn't really change much and the stuff that it did add got stupid. Like having the game revolve around Pokemon who embodied time and space. Or actual god.
>>
>>388691815
Gen 3 and Gen 4 make the transition era, arguably Crystal is the start and Platinum is the end. Masuda had a clear plan from the start for everything from RS to DP, and Platinum is an extension of it because the head of DP English localization told the head writer of the game the plot was shit and he wanted a retake so to speak.

Gen 5 onwards is the modern era. One could probably argue HGSS could be a part of it, but that hinges entirely on the changes to the Legendary plot.

Sounds cool, although I'm not completely sold on that relationship stuff based on what you said. Even if it ends up being a nice fangame, I don't think I'd be interested in grinding out some NPC friendship values after the main game just to see some fanfiction events involving them. With that in mind, I'd probably try to make all of those things plausibly achievable over the course of the usual singleplayer adventure of collecting the badges and beating the league.

I'm just surprised to hear things about (presumably) Ogasawara that I had not already heard before. (I really admire the dude's work in localizing gens 1-4.) The stuff about Masuda doing pre-planning for gens 3&4 as a whole I already knew about from Game Freak interviews, but this localization tidbit was news to me and I would ask for sauce on that.

>>388693907
Cyrus, the Team Galactic boss, was an autist kid who grew up with uncaring parents and ended up liking technology & machinery more than interacting with other people. He then founded Team Galactic with the front of a company that was researching new energy sources, but it was basically his personal cult led by admins who wanted to suck his dick and grunts that were idiots impressed by his speeches. His goal was to use the power of Dialga/Palkia to create a new universe for him to live in, one that didn't have human emotions which he regarded as an imperfection and source of conflict, etc.

Silly stuff.

>grinding out some NPC friendship values after the main game
Perhaps "values" wasn't the best term to use. There'd be no grinding involved; it'd be more along the lines of
>beat Brock and exchange phone numbers
>he calls you after you beat Lt Surge and says "1v1 me again fgt"
>you beat him and he gives you a Hard Stone
>if you haven't done Silph Co yet, he'll now show up and help you with that by standing around pretending to help other NPCs or some shit
>after this you can talk to him in Saffron Pokemon Center and he'll give you a Metal Coat and tell you to rematch him again after you've beaten the E4
>beat him then and he'll give you an egg for some rock/ground shit not found in Kanto
So maybe a sidequest chain would be a better description? Just little somethings to keep characters relevant throughout the game, if the player so chooses to humor them.

This one is basically down to the leader's fucked up ideals, again. Lysandre was an inventor with ancestry in a prestigious family in the Kalos region. He saw this to mean he was more responsible for the people of Kalos than most, so he worked super hard to improve life for everyone. But because he saw that the world had assholes in it who would rather take from others without ever giving anything back to society, he became jaded and founded Team Flare. In order to ensure that nobody had to suffer from lack anymore, he figured that he should genocide most of the region's populace (and all Pokemon, because they can be used as weapons to deprive others of resources) while leaving the 'chosen righteous' of Team Flare alive to rebuild the land. Too bad the Team Flare members were all assholes themselves, either being rich fuckers who paid through the nose to get into Lysandre's sekrit klub (like Elite Four member and newscaster Malva) or aimless youths who Lysandre had rounded up and "offered work" by stuffing them in uniforms. So basically, Lysandre was ginger anime Hitler who wanted to use an ancient doomsday weapon to nuke the shit out of not-France to secure Lebensraum.

There's a LP of Platinum from Something Awful where the translator posted in the thread chiming in on his time with the series and they get quoted at the end of some of the updates. The actual thing said is actually just that when translating DP he told the script writer that a lot of the motivations behind Galactic weren't well-defined, which led to a lot of the new stuff with Galactic and Cyrus. That being the reason for Platinum itself is merely conjecture, though it does sound like something Game Freak would do.

>>388691564
You're missing the point, it's that people use all the problems BW and BW2 had as a negative for XY and SM, but conveniently gloss over it because they feel it's "good" when Unova does it. Constant roadblocks and cutscenes, even in BW2, forced tutorials all over the place, free heals (even worse in BW2, surprisingly) linear region and worsened enemy teams (most notably gym leaders and E4 having small parties) hampered the experience. They tried to divert attention to it by introducing flashy gimmicks and features like N's Pokemon, reused DPPt/HGSS sprites and dialogue, dating an idol, achievements and difficulty modes (which would theoretically fix the enemy team problem, but is handled so horribly that you'll almost never be able to use it before the postgame) but these issues still exist.
They get too much credit for what they really are, the start of the series decline

Pretty sure the concept was there always, they just didn't actually explain shit in the games until SM. Even in the anime series, Korrina's Lucario was going all berserk when mega evolved because she was a shitty trainer and didn't know how to keep it in check.

Z-moves are kind of a reuse of the same concept (drawing strength from the bond between a Pokemon and its trainer) with a more kid-friendly coat of paint, though, you'd be right about that.

They are appointed authorities of the *most popular sport ever*. A Pokemon Gym is a pretty big deal for a town, in the same way as having the whole Pokemon League institution is a big deal for a region (as we saw in Sun and Moon). Gym Leaders can have other obligations besides being a battling expert, like Clay being a mining industry bigshot or Elesa being a supermodel, and they are consistently fairly influential people, but at the same time it's not as simple as 'they're pretty much the mayor'.

Lusamine didn't really do shit on a global scale. She authorized some weird shit in Aether Paradise like creating the sad creature that is Type:Null and cryofreezing some of her own Pokemon, and a couple Ultra Beasts got into Alola when she opened a portal to Ultra Space, but other than that her biggest sin was being an abusive and uncaring mother. If you had just left her alone in Ultra Space she would have died there with her precious mindflayers keeping her company, but you had to and get her back because of Lillie's wishes. Friend of Mineral Town vs Ruby/Sapphire

HM:DS vs Emerald
Magical Melody vs Emerald
Sunshine Islands vs Platinum
Trio of Towns vs Sun/Moon

Pokemon is admittedly caught up. But only because the HM series slacked. But it's not blowing Story of Season away or anything. SoS is a tiny budget title. Pokemon is one of the most profitablee franches in the world. And this is all they have to show for it?
