Haven't played it, is it a proper sequel to Quake III or do the champions fuck it all up?

Been watching the Quakecon footage of it and it seems to be pretty on the mark but iunno.

The champions abilities are pretty low-key, and can be avoided by anyone with half a brain. Some are pretty useless, too, like the robot

It's VQ3 with some extra abilities and most characters having some form of movement from another Quake game (Q1 bunnyhopping, Q4 sliding, etc.). More like UT99/2k4 with the Racial Abilities/Statistics mutators.

The champs add variety but dont get in the way of skillful play. The major amd most valid complaint cirrently is hit detection issues on rox and rail, as well as lag spikes and frame drops for some. All in all its worth the money if you love Quake and are willing to put up w some dumb shit while the game is worked on. Otherwise wait for release, which will be f2p.

That's what I've been gathering from footage, seems they've handled the champion skills pretty well. Only fear I have is that, as far as I know there's still some elements of the free to play model in there, which might cause an escalation
in new champion's skills to entice more people to drop cash on those new champions.

All in all, pretty happy to see Quake back though.

The starting character is one of the most well-balanced in the game, and so far most of the newly added characters' abilities have been meh at most.

Champion abilities are more like small "boons" that are useful at doing specific things or having specific purposes and less about being a super game breaking ability. None of the Champions abilities will wipe out the entire team of 4 in an opposing TDM game unless they do something stupid like everyone standing in a line against a charging Scalebreaker for an example.

I personally like using Galena because I play a large amount of TDM and Sacrifice and her totems can be affected by Quad damage
