I dunno how I feel about the open world. A lot of what I liked about the first one would be so difficult to pull off in an open world game. Hopefully I'm getting the wrong impression. It could just be massive non linear lvls. Like your in a town instead of going corridor to corridor in a sewwer.

Also a lot of people didn't like it but I liked how the first game kept changing and was unpredictable. First your just running away, Then your sneaking around, Then your fighting off hoards, then it's time to run away again but this time you can fight back if you chose. I actually agree with this. However I also think fixed or cinematic camera angles are equally good for horror. This TPS shit is not good for horror. Especially not since these games always give the player too many tools and ammunition to fight the monsters. It is fucking stupid.

What I want to see is horror that is merged with some good stealth gameplay but also has combat if you need to do it. Something like Manhunt but 1000 times better of course. Maybe even use classic Splinter Cell as the gameplay template. Until a TPS horror does that it will continue to be much inferior to first person and camera angle horror games.

I bought first game on both console and pc (there was a reason) and never got myself to properly play that. And honestly i don't really regret it because later i learned that in first hour of the game you can get AGONY CROSSBOW, IS THIS SURVIVAL HORROR OR WHAT and also game ends with stationary machine gun. My friend who have beaten it on release also was pretty dissapointed.

Horror does not equal shitting yourself every second. Horror is a theme in which to base your work in. For example Castlevania is horror themed, but not scary (can be atmospheric when it wants to though). When you shift your work to rely solely on scaring someone, it ultimately turns out shit because the person watching/playing gets used to the scares. Then the dev so focused on trying to scare people, forget to make it entertaining or are too scared to make it entertaining in fear of breaking "immersion". Outlast is a great example of this, it's pretty atmospheric and scary for the first 30 min to an hour, then it gets old and you're left with a walking sim where there's nothing much to do. Newer horror films fall victim to this too as they're so focused on trying to scare people, they forget to make the film interesting/entertaining.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill are great horror games because even if you're not shitting yourself 24/7 they are still entertaining either through gameplay, exploration or story, and poor judgement on the players part can lead to some genuinely tense and scary moments. Going back to films, look at the classics: Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th etc. None of these rely on scaring the viewer 100% of the time, often have goofy moments, and over the top violence to make the film fun to watch even if the viewer isn't scared.

Obviously there's more to the horror genre than I've wrote about but that helps my case in saying; Horror does not have to equal scary.

That said, The Evil Within 2 seems to try and force scares on you which is shit. Just let me play the damn game, and let the scares come naturally. If no scares come, at least I'll have fun playing the game.

We are bitching about the forced monologue. Why does he have to tell himself to run? why does he announce to himself that its a dead end? The player can obviously see these things for himself. No one goes around stating obvious truths to themselves.

Looks good. I can't wait to get the sequel. Looks like it's fixing all my complaints about the first game. The controls look better and tighter. Sebastian can no longer turn towards the camera. The shooting looks like it will feel better. Actual geography so we have a sense of actual progression.

It's kind of fun. It's like RE4 meets Last of Us in the sense that there's plenty of wannabe Ganados to shoot and stealth kill and you can take trap parts to make different types of ammo for your crossbow to trick enemies
