Me too. I was enjoying the first few very story-driven campaign missions until it opened up and I realized that you have to do the same thing in every mission again and again, only more efficiently every time. That's when I realized the genre is not for me.

>>388654980
You get one in the begining of the mission dumbass
>>388655134
You could build walls in warcraft 2 multiplayer.
The problem was that walls weren't a structure of the team in warcraft 2, so the AI couldn't deal with it which is why they excluded it from singleplayer.

By far the most well known RTS there but that doesn't mean it gets to escape the relative niche nature of their PC market.
There is a good reason why AoE1 got Yamato people before Romans, though. The games did well worldwide and Microsoft had no problem marketing stuff to their biggest Asian userbase of the time.
The only game for them to play during LAN parties in college (where you get PCs, spare time and everything on a single network all together and set up already).
Even made several fan game clones of it like the Touhou RTS games.

Sometimes life throws you a bone.
>>388652859
post yfw it's just your overdue Scout you lost somewhere that got killed near the enemy base at castle age.
You will never play an Age of Empires-like game with:
>huge towns and building-maintaining focus
>build armies and explore/expand
>fight off barbarian invasions and enemy nations
Basically, an Age of Empires + Civilization cross over, with the same layout and controls from AoE but with huge maps and a slower building gameplay.
Feels bad.
>>388681035
Well, can't complain. It's my favorite video game franchise.
>>388681241
AoE is already Civ + Warcraft, as stated by the devs themselves.
>>388681337
But the scale is so small, building is way too straight forward and simplistic and the matches are way too short.
We can go deeper than just rushing or booming!
What time era do you think AoE4 will cover?
Personally I can see it going something like this:
Era: 1830-WW1 (roughly the same as Victoria II) aka the Age of Imperialism
Locations would be around the world, mostly in areas affected by Imperialism, such as Africa, India, East Asia, Indochina, the Pacific, and Latin America. North America can also be represented.
Timeline would start right after the Napoleonic era, with the aesthetics thereof (flashy uniforms, muzzle loading muskets, etc.). As time progresses so does the architecture and the uniforms and weapons of the units. By the last age, most soldiers are wearing drab or khaki uniforms, caps or helmets, using bolt action rifles, etc.
Potential nations on release:
Great Britain
The United States
France
Germany
Japan
Russia
Italy
Gameplay changes - resources are now raw materials (gained from wood and iron mines), precious metals (gained from diamond, silver, and gold mines), and oil (gathered at oil wells).
Instead of native tribes, there's indigenous villages, which are a cross between villages from AoM and Tribes from AoE3. While it may be possible to build your own town centers, you can either build for cheaper or only on a village. What culture the village is will depend on its effects, whether its a passive bonus, gives a researchable tech, or provides a recruitable unit (for example, a Nepalese village grants the ability to recruit Gurkhas).
Gameplay would otherwise be similar to AoE3, but with the emergence of new technologies (the Gatling Gun, the Maxim Gun, Faster loading rifles, revolvers, ironclads, dreadnoughts, and ultimately tanks and possibly airplanes).

Africa Expansion - Algerians, Zulu, Sudan
Other Europeans Expansion - Netherlands, Belgium, Spain (for Spanish-American War)
Native Americans Expansion - Sioux, Apache, Navajo (or Nez Perce)
Latin America Expansion - Mexico, Colombia, Argentina

Austria-Hungary would be nice, as would Poland. The Ottomans will probably be included as well. I'm personally most excited for the naval aspect as this particular era saw a lot of rapid advancement in naval tech as well as some cool looking ships. I'm also expecting a Crimean campaign as that would be perfect for showcasing the advancement of tech and the change of warfare in the 19th century. My dream would be a WWI Jap campaign taking place against the Germans in the Far East but that's a part of history that will be forgotten forever.

>>388682270
I was thinking maybe a little bit earlier. 1800-1917. This lets the player build up towns naturally in the first half of the game and ww1 is all about defending them. Perhaps instead of trade caravans you can construct rail roads that run around the map. They can later be used to move soldiers around quickly as long as the lines are connected and the trains are running.
Maybe include Ethiopia as a civilization? Even though they never expanded particularly far, they still were able to beat Italy in a war. Unlike China which would pretty much be a joke of a faction for the time period.

I pray that Relic will try to do something new with more powerful processors. I want to see ships that behave like real warships rather than just larger units. Give them turning radius and reliance on wind until engines are developed.
Poland, Austria, and the Ottomans would all be great civilizations to play. I hope they don't try and push meme-tier civs like the Zulu or god forbid keep the Aztecs around. I'm all for playing what-if, but there should be at least some adherence to reality, especially now that we are entering a time period much more defined than "The Middle Ages"
>>388684178
With China though you can see the collapse of the Qing, as well as the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion
>>388684445
You can't really have Imperial Africa without ZULU references though
>>388684572
I guess. I have no idea how you would balance them though since they pretty much refused to modernize and as a result got their asses handed to them in every single conflict.
What setting are you hoping for in AoE4?
Personally I'd be so down for just a bit past AoE3; let's say 1800-1914.
>>388684850
I hate 'modern' settings in RTS', so either more past history or go full robots/aliens/etc.
>>388684445
I think if they want to move into this era they should take some influences from the Cossacks series. Firearms should cost coal/someotherresource to fire, ships should be very expensive, slow, but able to delivery a lot of firepower at the cost of tremendous resources. Same goes for artillery.
>>388684742
If they're going to work with this era they'll have to find some way around the technology gap. Otherwise a ton of eastern and middle-eastern nations won't make any sense at all.
>>388684675
By all means keep them in as a minor civ that you can recruit like in Age 3. I just think it would be silly for them to have their own full civilization slot.

how do i get good at this game?
i'm stuck at the joan of arc level where u need to go through the city and take some villagers to the other side
i played like 300 hours when i was a kid but never tried to get better at the game
i just liked to build towns
>>388692057
anon, the only reason the majority of people played these games as a kid was the comfy town building.
>>388692057
Go slow
Use unit counters; Form unit groups to specialize them.
I forget if you have priests in that mission, but don't feel bad about sitting around and healing up
If anything, sometimes it's good to just shoot people with archers and hold back your footmen
>>388692057
Look up fast castle guides to youtube and practise the shit out of it until it's second nature.
Once you have that down pat you can focus on learning things like tactics and shit and whatnot.
Don't fuss too much over the missions most of them are just loads of bullshit that either pit you against odds that require perfect map knowledge and exploitative tactics against the AI, or ambushes that wipe out your limited supply of men. The campaigns were made when it was expected for you to have 25 saves for a single mission and fail about 50 times until you figure something out.
Saladin's final level for instance which is one of the hardest missions in the game where you're supposed to immediately start building a wonder and defend your prebuilt city from attack from multiple crusader armies is best handled by NOT building your wonder immediately and instead sending all your units up the left side of the map, wipe out one of the enemies instantly before it builds anything, then quickly plop down two castles where their base used to be and then ferry all the units from the other armies into it. RTS campaigns are just bullshit that require bullshit to cinch a victory.
>post yfw AoE4 ends up being "Starcraft 2 with swords"
>>388692057
>>388688312 speaking here
First, learn to type correctly
Second, if you will play with this 'Comfy city-builder' mentality, then AoE2 is not a game for you and you should stop. The campaigns are supposed to punish you for having this gamestyle, forcing you out of your comfort zone, don't be surprised if you get crushed. Man the fuck up.
Third, what >>388692293 and >>388692514 said
Fourth, study the mechanics of the game, do your homework
Lastly, practise, and a lot; grind many hours of playing so you can get the mental speed and agility to keep up with the harsh game
Sorry for sounding like a cunt, but this is what you need to do
>>388692514
not him but I think the aoe2 campaigns are just dumb hard to the point of being poorly designed. there are absolutely RTS games with good single player.
t. grew up with age of empires, starcraft and warcraft
>>388692526
I'm more worried about it being "19th Century DOW III" at this point. Czar Alexander will put down the Decembrists with force fields.
>>388692930
I grew up playing Starcraft and AoE too, and although I agree some missions are very unforgiving, such as the last Saladin mission, the last Joan of Arc mission, etc; they are far away from being poorly designed
I politely disagree
>>388693142
The last Joan of Arc mission is actually really fucking easy, it just LOOKS hard. The only hard part comes at the very start as you bust through the defenders of the city wall. Once you do that the city is mostly just defended by small roaming packs of 4 archers or 4 spearmen.
You want hard? Try the fucking Bari missions in Forgotten.
I hate trying to go for fast castle because I hate the idea of microing boars and then I also hate the fact you need to have stone miners ready the instant so you can build a castle
>>388693479
Fast castling doesn't mean building a castle ASAP, it means getting to the castle age so you can shit out knights before anyone else does.
>>388692057
>>388692930
If you're playing HD edition then all the campaigns will be harder than they used to be thanks to the new AI. Old AI was easy as shit to beat, new one actually builds units. I never had trouble as a kid with the campaigns, I've actually lost campaigns in the HD edition cause I wasn't prepared for the AI actually fighting back.
>>388693536

>>388693304
>The last Joan of Arc mission is actually really fucking easy, it just LOOKS hard. The only hard part comes at the very start as you bust through the defenders of the city wall. Once you do that the city is mostly just defended by small roaming packs of 4 archers or 4 spearmen.
The last time I played on hardest, my army couldnt withstand the constant attacks of british longbowmen, cavalry and infantry that kept sieging me down. I dont remenber that mission to be 'easy'. Feel free to prove me wrong.
>You want hard? Try the fucking Bari missions in Forgotten.
I actually beat that campaign too, although took me days to do so
What bothered me is that first section of the third scenario, in which I got forced to put my army on the 1 tile gap between the barrack and wood wall to survive
>>388693615
Oh boy I remenber that map too
Such a shitfest
>>388693589
Teutonic knights are actually terrible anon. They're really more of a last line of defence against invaders who have penetrated past your walls and occasionally as something to stuff into rams when you're using rams to siege.
>>388693702
There's basically two 'defending' armies around each of the two gates you have to attack to get in. After that once you're inside there's small roaming packs of patrolling units. You're probably leaving your army to run amock in the city and aggro everything. Once you've penetrated into the city set everyone to no attack and draw out small packs at a time and kill them. Maybe it's just me but I understood that pretty easily.
>>388693569
>new AI in old campaigns
Probably the worst old campaign that gets hit by this is the final mongol mission. An endless fucking stream of units. And they seem to have psychic trebuchets, as if you block the bridge then later when you have to knock down the forest their trebuchets will instantly move to the forest line to destroy your own siege units.
Which kingdom is the worst?
>>388695126
Turks if you have no allies.
Other than that? Probably nobody.
>>388654745
Also underrated vs goths
>scorpions, many of them, cover with halberds, some battering rams and more halberds
Champions and halberds get shredded by scorpions no matter how many you toss at them once you have over 20 or so, which means huskarls are the only option, and while they might rush into your siege its still a slaugther in your favor, only good way to take out scorps+halbs forma goths is trebuchets and mangonels, with bombard cannons and skirmishers being some other options but usually no goth has the research for those to help.
>got super excited about this game when it came out because I was 6 and my older brother convinced our father to procure it for us
>doesnt let me play at first because its too mature but relents
>grow old with the game, can never beat my brother even whilst cheating because its too hard
>forget about it after a while
>find out its been rereleased in hd

>play a match against AI
>get my shit stomped in feudal age by a massive swarm of archers and skirmishers
>read up on it, find out you literally have to follow a prescribed build order to beat the new AI
>uninstall and never look back
RTS is a shitty genre. No one should play this game.
