Makoto was a jolly good boi that admired everyone else. Hajime was pretty neutral and only after the initial first impressions did he start having his own thoughts on people like Teruteru and Nagito. Kaede is like that right out of the gate

Her obsession for protect everyone caused her death. She could escape thanks to the "monokuma first prize" where the first killer can go away without class trial. She refused it because she wanted to leave with everyone and decided to stay even though she knew the high possibility to die.

The idea of the mastermind being amongst them wasn't really even a thing in DR1 and 2. Just the idea of a 'traitor' who the existence of which could be called into question because it was Monokuma who brought it up.

Also neither had the 'break' early on that Kaede and Shuichi had of finding the mastermind's base, so there was no opportunity to take the fight to the mastermind until nearer the end. Which is kinda surprising when you think about it, since Naegi's LCK powers should have him tripping over secret passages and things from the get go
