I calibrated 5.1k MMR around 2013 when ranked finally came out. Capped off around 5.7k primarily playing Visage and Post 6.79 Earth Spirit

Put the shit game down around near the end of 2014 because patches kept shitting on the game.

But in the end, the game was always shit. I only stuck around because my friends played it like zombies.

That doesn't really make the gameplay all that different.

Dota has better itemization and is a bit slower paced (speaking of reaction times as a "skill") and a little more strategic, but not enough to make a big difference. Both of them are still the same game, the same WC3 mod with some WC3 mechanics still being carried over.

The skill requirement of Quake is vastly overestimated. It's definitely more technical than the average shooter and way more technical than current day shooters, but the mechanical depth is fairly shallow.
You have bunnyopping, rocket and strafe jumping as your movement techniques and none of these take that long to master, so most of the game's challenge comes from maintaining map control with projectile spam and outsmarting your opponent when racing for power-ups.
Not to trivialize all this as it is a genuinely great game with a decent skill ceiling, but good reaction time and precision will carry you. There is a reason they call it twitch shooter.
Don't want to start shit here, but most people who glorify Quake very likely don't play it today and probably never invested very much time into it to begin with.
