It plays just fine, the clincher for me will be the level design.

Nah, the demo demonstrated they had a solid grasp on how the movement should feel and the tutorial level was pretty decent albeit simple. Movement and level design are the two most important things, in a metroid style game so I think it'll turn out well as long as they maintain that level of quality for the whole thing.
