Are rhythm games dead?
>>
Unless they're a tie-in for some long running anime girl/girls, like the Project Diva and Idolm@s (or love live i don't know which one it is) games, yes.
>>
On playstation yeah
>>
>>388601703
Yes
>>
>>388601703
They require skill so yes
>>
I sure hope so, going to an arcade and seeing that all the rhythm games are in a totally different section then the normal arcade machines because the only people who use them fester up a smell of sweat, body odor, and shame. Theres a literal shift in atmosphere and scent once you look in the direction of the rhythm games
>>
Many rhythm games are costly to make due to a lot of reliance on expensive licensed music, both in eastern and western games. Many companies don't even bother trying make them unless they already own the rights to the music they are using, like the Def Jam games, or Konami with its Beatmania/Dance Dance Revolution series. And even for them, the games have to be pushed while the music is still relevant or else nobody will want to play it and the game will flop. For most companies its a too-expensive investment for such an unstable genre. The popularity of VR might revitalize it once the platform becomes more reliable, more prevalent, and less costly.
>>
>>388601703
in amerikka, yes - in japan, no
>>
Got to play pop n music for the first time at gamescom, it's cool as fuck but seems like a pain in the ass to get all I need to play it.
>>
>>388601703
On console and PC: Probably.
In arcade: No.

>>388602456
Konami actually released DDR-A in US recently, legally(real Konami imports, nothing grey market here), with English e-Amusement and everything.
>>
>>388601771
Project diva was successful because the tracklist is all fan-favorite vocaloid songs and you don't need special hardware to play.

What really killed rhythm games in the west was licensed pop music, publishers releasing the same guitar game 5 times in one year, separate franchises which were functionally identical and people just got sick of more fake plastic instrument games in general.
>>
>>388601703
Taiko is still alive

In Japan, god no. They're still going very strong. Mostly with games from Konami's BEMANI branch. New version of Beatmania IIDX is coming soon.
>>
>>388601703
Considering that pic related, the last bastion of story-based rhythm games from the minds of both Parappa and Ouendan (aka my favorite 2 rhythm games), failed spectacularly at getting crowdfunded.

Parappa isn't a rhythm game. It's a retarded button masher that makes no sense.

>Mfw trying to play PArappa with the given notes rather than just mashing my controller
>>
>>388604708
you're supposed to mash them with the meat of your palm
>>
>>388603873
it probably would've done better if it was animated instead of just slideshows images with qte
>>
>>388601703
yes and this is good.
This shitty genre introduced qte bullshit.
>>
Why do people like rhythm games, they're just gigantic QTEs
>>
>>388601703
Seems like it, can't say I care though. Not sure why I'd spend the time to get better at a rhythm game when I could just use that time to learn the real deal.
>>
I got a game on my switch called thumper it's real cool at least the last few levels on youtube I only got it since the genre was rythm/horror and I thought wtf so I got it and actually smiled when I played it

Osu isn't fun, you've tricked yourself into thinking it's fun just so you'll fit into the osu community made up entirely of ironic weebs who still think filthy frank is the funniest shit ever in 2017
>>
>>388604743
"crowdfunds work better with a demo" has been proven over time to be complete nonsense. It's all about brand recognition and marketing.

It was never more alive. Only the people who don't like actual rhythm games think the genre is dead.
>>
>>388606162

>when DDR was hot

you mean the faggotry that killed arcades? only rich kids could afford to play this shit to an autist degree

if you enjoy a game enough to become good at it, you'll buy the home port and blow money building a controller to simulate the real thing
>>

How could you be that autistic OP ? Do you really think that, with all those eastern rhythm games that come out each year, the genre could be dead ?
>>
>>388603425
I can't wait for IIDX 25 Sbarro
>>
>>388607028
It's pretty damn dead in the West. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are dead, Amplitude '16 almost didn't get funded, I honestly have no idea how Harmonix is even in business still.

Who else even makes rhythm games in the West? Anyone?

All the Eastern games enjoy very minimal success in the West, if they even get localized to begin with.

>>
>>388604717
The entire point is to follow the beat and freestyle. The button prompts are the general flow and you expand on them.
>>
>>388607147
For sure rhythm gaming is dead in the west, only kept alive by a couple arcade houses like Round 1 that import current eastern rhythm games.
>>
>>388603873
To be fair, the actual reveal/Kickstarter were handled in such a godawful way. Seriously, they couldn't have possibly handled it worse if they tried.

I remember when DDR was cool and then 9/11 happened and it was never cool again. Rhythm games will be popular again if VR ever stops being a meme but I doubt it.

to be fair, they weren't going to hire actual lyricists if they dont have the funds for it, which we can clearly see.

But fuck man, I really wanted to see where they would go with it. I see what they were going for, and I like it, but I wouldve preferred to see something more though.

I know they didn't have the funds to go out and find an actual rapper or anything like that, but making a game that entirely revolves around rapping, and then showing terrible rap verses with the excuse of "we'll hire a rapper once it gets funded" is like making a kickstarter for a movie with a shit trailer and saying "Oh yeah we'll hire a director once we get funded lol"
