The world was at a slightly larger scale than the people/cars.
You moved relatively slow (top speed in the fastest car is only ~100mph IIRC).
The reduced draw distance helped hide the world.
Most of the objectives weren't just on the main stretches of long roads and had you going through multiple turns to get to them.

They actually made it feel like three full, distinct cities, and it was still possible to get lost and find new places after hundreds of hours of play. Meanwhile V has a map that's something like 6x the size, but still manages to feel tiny and rarely gives any feeling of exploration.

in open world your escape plan is literally "the opposite direction of the enemy, maybe slightly left or right if a hill or obstacle might conceal you faster". in a building, even if you know it by heart, being spotted and running away isnt a simple "turn around", its possible your in a dead end, its possible your escape route is longer then the route the enemy takes to block it, there might be multiple routes and you may need to make a split second decision.

You need to make a map SMALLER to make it feel bigger, and design quests to teach the player about the details of the area.

Take GTA:VC. The game's starting quests keep you around the same area long enough that you start to learn the intricacies of the city. Then you start to have fun ditching cops with the jumps you learned, or dodging through a narrow pedestrian walkway as a shortcut that you know, but isn't on the map. That way, when shit gets real, you get satisfaction in outsmarting the mission/cops/whatever with the knowledge that you gained in an organic way.

From there the game gradually pushes you to the other side of the bridges, but never at a rate that you feel overwhelmed, or where you don't feel like you generally know where things are even if you don't know everything about the area. Eventually you end up learning the whole city.

Now take GTA:V. It's an utter clustefuck, which, to Rockstar's credit, is just like LA even if the traffic is too light. If I need to get from downtown out to the desert or some fucking mountain, I'm not going to be arsed to figure out how to get there, that's a gigantic pain in my ass, and there's far too much to know. I'm just going to follow the general direction of the objective marker because driving around aimlessly isn't fun.

Same thing applies to fantasy games. TW3 suffered from the "ride roach to place then follow map markers" with the exception of a few quests. JC2 is probably the worst offender. Open world games need LESS space with MORE content that rewards the player for knowing the area.

I wish I could post Runescape but it is either dead space of nothing but walking or have so much shit shove into a single area that realistically can never be a real town (Lumby nowadays) making the map poorly designed. Also the devs fuck themselves over when they literally surround the F2P area with P2P stuff. They can't expand without outright making P2P stuff into F2P.

I put in hundreds of hours going around San Andreas autistically making panoramas with the shitty little cell phone in game, and I can say without a doubt that you're full of shit. The game has some nice little locations that make you go "oh wow, that's neat" but there's nothing really breathtaking about any of them. Blue side advantage on the map is mostly because they nerfed the ever living fuck out of dragon. Taking dragons is basically a negative objective at this point - you get mathematically more value from stealing two jungle camps and pushing a wave yo tower. Back when it gave 1k gold divided to your team it was more worth it, and even further back when it gave XP purple side actually had advantage in high elo.

Even then, most of the modern blue side advantage is because modern riot is absolute pants at champ design direction and counterpicking no longer exists in the game, so blue side gets advantage of first picking a strong champ and purple side getting last pick no longer allows them to hardcounter their matchup of choice.

I think the first Suikoden was kind of a proof of concept that the Konami team used to see if they could make an RPG. It is still quite good and it is the shortest one so it might not be too much of a hassle to get through, and the novelty of carrying your save file over to the sequel is neat (which reminds me, you may want to try to play the first 3 games on the same format. Carrying your file over isn't super important for enjoying the games, but it is still better to have the option than not).
Still, I'm not sure I could honestly put Suikoden 1 quite on par with FF6.

Suikoden 2 I think is the game they wanted to make all along, improves in every single aspect over the first, and is possibly my favorite game of all time. I'd rank it significantly higher than FF6.

Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest games of all time. Suikoden 1 is a fun adventure that you can 100% in like 18 hours, and will make Suikoden 2 exponentially more fun on top of that. I still love Legend of Dragoon because it was my (baby's) first JRPG but I in hindsight I can see there's a lot wrong with it. Suikoden 2 is still objectively a fantastic game. FF6 is great too, but Suikoden 2 is in a class of its own.

Hoenn and Sinnoh both felt like adventures through a world. Unova, Kalos and Alola are just theme park rides. I guess that's what happens when the games are no longer based in an area the developers are familiar with.
