Pressing Circle makes you recover after getting with a Bravery attack but after you get hit with an HP attack it's a hard knockdown so don't get hit by those. Dodging and guarding is absolutely useful and definitely quick enough to avoid or block even Tidus' attacks so it may be your connection. The way to avoid getting ganged up on is to stay near your team this is a 3v3 after all.

I tried playing as Cecil, then Tidus, then Cloud (just pressing random mostly). So far, guarding seems to take like 3 secs of holding the l1 to work. And once i had guard up and the opponent just slice it past like nothing.

Every attack is a different job. Master them and they get additional attributes. Chocobo feather buffs you team based on how many jobs you master.

Well, WoL didn't get a real design until the late 90s remakes of FF1 anyways. Up until then it was just fighter, black mage, white mage, and either monk or red mage that was the FF1 party depending on who did the art. Garland and Sara were the only notable characters from there.

FF2 was a pretty hard break from what they did in FF1 and it's actually surprising that it didn't kill the franchise right then and there given how many people didn't like it. However it had a full cast of heroes and villains alike with a multi-layered story and pretty much set the stage for everything people love about FF.

Teamwork. Summons are usually cast at the same time so it happens instantly. HP attacks against the wall are difficult considering a teammate is always nearby to stop you.
