I was that kid but I actually did it, even though I switched to drums and bass and didn't look back two years later

GH helped instill a good sense of rhythm in me, seriously

this, just because it sounds cool doesn't mean the chord progressions arent easy as fuck, its like saying the guitar wanking on The Four Horsemen is hard because it sounds complex

Because it the section where the song first really picks up is indeed a lot harder on GH than irl

Not denying that but my point is that for a game called "Legends of Rock" there are so many to choose from so it's really weird they picked Tom Morello. The guy is good, no question, just not a legend.

I loved GH2/3 as a teenager but after the series died I got into JP rhythm games and it's hard to go back to GH/RB/whatever other Harmonix piece of shit after that. The songs are fun but it's hard to take seriously since the accuracy windows are super chunky and the scoring system sucks, plus how strict they are with over-strumming is just annoying frankly. >>
>>388546001
The mainstream craze died, but that's all. The truth is the games being popular was because they were essentially video game karaoke. The fad died down for most and the actual fans of the genre turned out to be much smaller than what you could profit on while licensing 50+ mainstream pop music tracks. That's basically why the only rhythm games that exist now are Asian in origin where for whatever reason licenses don't murder you or they just write new music or hire musicians to make new music.

The catch is that they don't try jew you hard like western record companies, overseas localization is the biggest issue tho.

>>388546849
Nobody gives a shit about lyrics translations or whatever.

What I don't understand is how you can possibly license 200 songs worldwide and sell the product to like, what, 100k people?
>>
>>388546934
It's not really about translation but licensing, Nips are a bitch to deal with song licensing.

Thats why a lot of games get different songs when they get localized.
>>
>>388546934
There's probably a deal made since they're using the miku and friends vocaloids. Plus they're not these giant company backed producers.
>>
>>388546934
Like I said for whatever reason licensing music in Nipland isn't murder on your profits. They make money only selling to Japan, that's how good it is. Bringing those songs to the west can be a huge pain sometimes, but even then it's not so expensive you'll go broke.
>>
>>388546934
Most Vocaloid releases are done through doujin labels that charge very little for licensing.
As a result nearly every rhythm game at the moment has a bunch of Vocaloid in its songlist since it doesn't cost a whole bunch and is popular.
>>
>>388547176
Exactly. And then Sega goes back to the producers and says "uh so what about a worldwide license" and they're like "ok i'll take 5000 yen and company lunch" or something.
>>
>>388547427
Also you're talking about these game engines that effectively haven't been changed since 2009 so they're not even spending much development time on it, maybe a few new assets here or there but tons of shit reused to hell and back and animations and charting with charting being the actual time consuming thing. They cut a lot of corners where they can.
>>
I always found rock bands HOPOs bullshit to hit and found them really difficult to tell them apart visually playing the song for the first time. GH always felt more fun to play and the charts were more fun too.

If they had just kept Rock Band 1 updated with new tracks, it would still be alive today.

But, they had to shill for more instruments, and delete everyones acquired song lists in favor of a new game design.

You can have good rhythm and shit timing. A lot of songs have weird ass time signatures because they were made by jamming around. The rhythm is great but the timing changes.
In guitar hero you're not making music you're just following along and pressing buttons at the right time to match a prompt. That's timing.

GH and RB are easier for sure but they do things to be as intentionally awkward as possible and are needlessly strict compared to Bemani games. Bemani charts are harder but don't punish you for hitting extra buttons, instead they just cause you to hit notes way early and fuck up your accuracy because the game is about accuracy. GH and RB are not about accuracy, they don't have precision scoring and their hit windows are wide as fuck, but they heavily punish over strumming and hitting extra notes and the scoring system is as such that streaks are more important than accuracy. You can be sloppy as fuck as long as you hit every note, then it doesn't matter. It's not about accuracy, it's about FC.

>>

The songs were amazing though, fucking DJ Hero 1 had 10 Daft Punk mashups made by Daft Punk themselves, they had tons of great mixes done by world renowned DJs, it was an amazing game and an incredibly innovative gameplay style twisting the standard Bemani structure into one more about turn table control and accuracy and it worked very well. It didn't take off because the market had become so oversaturated that no one could or even wanted to keep up with it anymore.

going through and modding my setlist really shows how gh3 is capable of handling outside changes to the code and filesystem. The ui doesn't fuck up when you have like 3x the normal amount of songs. Blank songs don't get displayed in the setlists. The game doesn't fuck up animations when trying to load nonexistant lyric files. If you have rumble enabled and flip starpower the crowd clapping and controller rumbling still syncs up to the beat.

it's almost as if they intended to make the game accessible to midders

nigger GH/RB went on for 3-4 years after that South Park episode came out.
everyone claims oversaturation on Activision's part, which isn't completely wrong, but honestly the games just ran their course. it's not like they could have changed the gameplay in any significant way, so all they could have done with the series was add more DLC.
