When that first sample video came out with Audrey and the single mother arguing over hair people were shocked because you had cute anime style girls talking smack. It was culturaly shocking and we were disgusted, but weirdly amused and interested.

Then the game came out and the characters were endearing. People realized western-setting girls could be cute in video games, too. Plus it's not often you meet flawed endearing characters like Audrey.

From what I remember, the only time the girls interact with anybody other than the player is during the character introduction, when you go around places and meet them talking to each other. The whole thing needs more dialogue.
