DOOM is good. Great levels, great music(Harbringer and Damnation are good shit), and overall a fun time. Especially love for how essentially being storyless, the stuff that doomslayer ends up doing really tells you his character

DOOM is miles better though, for the gameplay quality and for the sheer content that stretches on for miles. Discounting online and gameplay mods which are a whole other planet, from the top of my head you have Alien Vendetta, Speed of Doom, Hell Revealed series, Scythe series, Valiant, Ancient Aliens, Epic series, Going Down, Sunlust, Plutonia series, and Jenesis. Whatever type of DOOM you like, you will find it(slaughterwads, short adventures, tough but small on numbers), and that's what makes it better

The one on the right shows both power and struggle. He is slaughtering demons while being dragged down by one, his clothes are torn and his skin is shredded. There is a clear effort by the demons reaching out to him to kill him. He is clearly mortal and his comrade in the background cares about him. This is what it should be like to play doom. You slay demons at the risk of losing your life.

The left is just some dude in full armor with a bunch of demons standing around waiting to be shot. A good representation of the AI in new Doom.

I think both are good games for different reasons.
The original pathed the way for FPS as a whole. It's still fun, it's still fast, and it's still pure.
New DOOM does a good job of reimagining classic doom for the modern world, and especially the current game climate. Obviously, this comes with some 'slights' to the original game - things like runes and weapon mods. A necessary evil, in my opinion, that doesn't taint the game. In fact, I agree with the decision. It offers more choice (which people like) and more variety without adding a nauseating amount of weapons.

All those were good aditions, but really lacking the detail and consitency on the maps and their progression of the first game really made me feel like i was playing a community map pack instead of a full game, also some of the Doom II maps have some very basic design, literally beginner square rooms and shapes, first doom at least has some architecture and complexity on it.

Despite Hexen being Heretic's sequel they're two completely different games. Since you played Hexen I don't need to explain, but Heretic is so similar to Doom in terms of gameplay it could pass for a user wad; it's basically Doom with a fantasy setting and an inventory system.

I want to get into playing the older ID games like Doom and Hexen and Heretic and stuff, but how do I do this properly?

I've had a fair amount of experience playing normal doom through steam, no other launcher or whatever that stuff is called. I played without using a mouse, keyboard only, not sure if that's normal. Mouse control seemed kinda garbage.

I keep hearing about things like gzdoom or zdoom or whatever. Can someone give me a rundown on what exactly I should download to enjoy these games the best? Is it against the original spirit of the game to play with a mouse?

Doom 3 was a departure from what made the series great, largely because Carmack was over making "quick" engines and had a hard on for lighting at the time, so Doom 3 had more of a horror focus as it's the best way they could maximise the lighting engine.

None of the locked arenas is a fucking corridor, there is hardly any fighs in corridors, go replay the game or stop talking crap you have no idea about. Doom 2016 fucks up by making ammo capacity so small you HAVE to use the chainsaw or finishers to replenish. In DOOM you have more than enough ammo for all of your weapons from pick ups and shoot monsters from beginning to end. Not to mention that the hotkeys are completely fucking broken, not allowing multiple weapons to be applied to the same number. I want to hit 3 to toggle between shotty and super shotty. fuck you 2016 Doom

Doom 2016 has just arenas with absolutey no encounter design whatsoever. It's boring as fuck and traversing the levels from beginning to end is entirely linear. I DOOM you have to go in different directions, backtrack (very small amounts) and unlock doors and change rooms so that they're different the second time around. Not to mention the way that monsters are placed to have hand crafted encounters from beginning to end. DOOM has some of the best encounter design in any game ever made

Either you lack reading comprehension or you are a moron. I clearly stated they were two different things. Going from one set peice locked arena to another is typically done with a narrow corridor filled with fodder enemies that you can execute to help you prepare for the next locked arena.

The reason why I point it out is that that's the only major difference the game has in level design to the procedually generated games which follow the same locked arena formula, like Paranautical Activity, Ziggurat or Immortal Redneck which came after it.

And again, locked arenas which you had to kill all enemies to progress were used extremely sparingly in Doom, really only limited to Boss levels in fact. So the design of them is largely irrelevant.

Then why call it a corridor shooter at all? Not my fault your whole post is contradictory or you are just a fanboy spouting terms you have no idea what those actually mean, corridor shooter means most of the maps are just designed around linear map design and corridors with even combat happening in narrow paths, most of the Doom arenas are open and are designed to keep the player moving to different parts of the map, combat is anything but something you would see in a corridor shooter.

Not in Doom, you get locked in arenas, but before that the maps are actually pretty open and require you to do more than simply moving forward, some have platforming, other have keys and others require you to trigger something first. There is hardly anything mediocre about it, tech is top notch, map design and combat is pretty elaborated, gameplay is polished, gunplay is solid. Doom 4 is a quality made game, only a pleb would claim otherwise. Doom 3 is mediocre because it's identity crisis, it doesn't know what it wants to be, a linear story telling game with literal jumpscares or a follow up to a classic fast paced shooter.

No, giving it different paths and combat happening in non linear parts of the map is what makes it not linear. Classic Doom wasn't exactly an open game either, levels have different paths but some also requiere you to find keys first in order to progress. But even so, i'm not comparing Doom(2016) to classic Doom, to me classic Doom level design remains unmatched and was made by literal geniuses, but claiming Doom 2016 has linear level design is simply being ignorant.

Then why even have ammo in the first place? Why not make every gun have infinite ammo? In the new Doom, which weapon you use is a tactical decision between using the best weapon for the situation you're in or conserving its ammo for later, and long fights are more intense because you start running out of ammo for the higher damage weapons and have to either play conservatively with backup weapons or make an aggressive move for the chainsaw/melee kill.

It increases the tension and rewards more skillful play - besides which, there is actually a rune that gives your weapons infinite ammo as long as your armor stays above a certain value, again rewarding skillful play.

I love both of them. Nightmare runs are very satisfying on D44M, and just general WADs in Doom are great. There's literally no reason to not like one version or the other, they're all great.
There are no bad doom games, at all, the worst of them 3/RPG are mediocre 6/10, everyone is just super touchy because they're fags.

D4D attempts to add D4 features as closely as possible.
D4T on the other hand, is "lightweight" version meant to keep Doom 2 gameplay. Also comes with working MP and bots.
I already clocked 3 times more time with D4T than I have with Doom 4
