It was made by one single person, over 5 years, from 1999 to 2004, and released for free when every other kind of "indie game" back then was flash stuff on newgrounds.

Another World doesn't have vertical aiming but it has that quick-draw-or-die feel and lots of frantic mashing. Very cowboy even if it's sci-fi. Like Cave Story it was also made by one man and was incredibly influential, definitely moreso than Cave Story. Time seems to be forgetting both though.

The dog fetching isn't TOO bad since it has you advancing further and further into the map for each dog, but I will agree that the Plantation fetch quests were just killing time especially because you have one of the boosters at that point, so there aren't any big obstructions.

But the entire underground prison and last cave segments were really good.

They do...? I will admit the fetch quests could've been better thought out, but I don't recall people wanking over it. They usually talk about Hell.

The main problem is that Pixel made doors and obstacles cleared only by progressing the story (ie. defeating a boss, talking to someone) and all of the weapons were pretty much optional. If he made another game in this style, it could apply elements of Metroid, so that the weapons and tools are what open up the obstacles and doors, this will also justify backtracking and exploration.

But other than that, it was a valiant effort for a one man job.

Actually, now that I think about, the First Cave was VERY Metroid, how the bricks on the right would obstruct your path in the beginning, but once you get the Polar Star, you can destroy it and move on. The game should've had more of that, just on a more advanced and difficult scale. For example, the Bush Lands could've had trees or spiky vines that could've been burned with the Fireball.

No, think about it. Typical JRPG fare you progress in the direction the game tells you. Paths unlock because of ~narrative reasons~. You have the option of backtracking through areas to reap small rewards if you want.
A Metroidvania though, that's very specific. Those are about gaining new tools that enable you to advance through old areas toward new ones with new tools. Backtracking is the name of the game. Cave Story really isn't fundamentally about backtracking so calling it a Metroidvania is misleading to new players. Frequently I see people complain along the lines of, "It was good, I guess, but it's not much of a Metroidvania," as if that's somehow a complaint, all because people don't know beans about genres and mislabel things.

The Switch version also adds in unfitting and sorta ugly fluid physics and a shading system. I think these are both optional, but it just shows Nicalis' philosophy that quality means excess. It's perverted. Not something that should be financially supported. Not that I'd play a Nicalis port even if it was free due to the speed thing.

I just finished it on Switch, and while I'm not a super expert on the nuances of Cave Story's ports, I liked it a lot. Personally I love convenience factor of the Switch being able to play on the TV and as a portable. There's some QoL improvements as well, like skippable cutscenes and carrying multiple dogs. I would recommend it, but again, as someone who doesn't know much about what was changed from the original.

His engine's time is bound to framerate. When he chose to move to 50fps, the game was made slower. I don't know how far into development the change was made. Probably when he was sending builds out to his internet pals for feedback. The thing is, the game is noticeably balanced to the decision to make it slower. 50fps Cave Story is a better game than 60fps Cave Story. 2) Download Retroarch: https://www.libretro.com/
3) Launch Retroarch.
4) Go to [Load Core] > [Download Core] > [Cave Story (NXEngine)] to download the NXEngine core.
5) Go to [Load Content] and navigate to where you saved Cave Story. Select "Doukutsu.exe".
6) Enjoy. Be sure to set the framerate to 50fps in the pause menu.

100%'d it and am very close to 100%-ing CS+ on steam, the last few speedrun cheevos have just been sitting there for years waiting to be beaten, I really should sit down and get those last few achievements when I get the chance next.

Anyway, I remember the jacket run being a pain in the ass. The tentacle boss with the RNG arms is a huge PITA, you just gotta get lucky and make sure you're making every single second count when his eyes open up.

It's difficult, but if you have the Spur and a lifepot it's fairly manageable. Just remember to upgrade that rocket launcher on the way to Balos and you'll have him, his second form gets shattered from rocket spam.

Also I love Cave Story. I fucking only played the game because I saw the Curly Brace on /v/ and I love pale skin girls. I saw the game's graphics and realized there wouldn't be much in the terms of fan service, but stuck with it anyways. After I adjusted to the game's floaty platforming I started to love it. Beat it, and then beat it again right afterwards to get that good ending. Pixel really just understands game design, Kero and Cave Story prove this.
