Some designs of sight have to be removed from the gun for battery changes.
I mean unless you've been using it a lot and really not paying attention, battery life shouldn't be a real concern. The sight getting broken could be though.

But...it isn't. They have totally different operating mechanisms. On is a gas operated long stroke piston and the other is roller delayed blowback. The G3 is a battle rifle while the STG-44 is an assault rifle.
The only similarity is that they're German.

For me it's the Dragunov (SVD-63). The first time I saw it was in Jagged Alliance 2 and since then it's just my favourite weapon of all times. The Mosin-Nagant comes second and I'd say third is the TKB-022 or TKB-011 but I've never seen them outside of mods.

According to a book called Tactical arms of the 21st century, the 9x39 SP-6 can pierce Class III body armor at 400 meters and have energy left over to take out a soft target behind it. Wikipedia also has info on its piercing capabilities against steel plate.
