I think i do, there was a lot of crazy and weird maps back then, we even had some iraq maps which had osama pictures in the walls and shitty allah akbar music playing in the background, also huge maps like one that you spawned in an aircraft carrier and the enemy flag was in some island.

I love Champions I don't get why people hate it too much. I am really impressed they managed to bring in all the different movespeeds from every Quake game and have it feel balanced. You should also learn the maps and the way your favorite hero builds speed. Because when you take all the important stuff like armors and 200 hp lifes and your enemy doesn't, you don't die immediatly if you make a mistake, unlike your opponent who has to play very carefully.

In more team-based modes it doesn't matter as much because you die very quickly in those anyway. Still good to have map knowledge so you can figure out the fastest routes to your own base to deliver the objective, etc.

Not gonna lie the netcode at times is shit. Rockets don't register and there's a memory leak issue. The free to play version offers one champion with the ability to unlock more champions with favor. You get favor from playing matches and completing challenges. In the time I've bought the champions pack I think I've unlocked 9-10 champions to own from backpacks.

Some guy defending it on the previous thread said that dud rockets happen "1-5%" of the time, which is an insane number, 1 in 100 rockets not doing damage is nuts considering I almost always fire all of them from a pickup, and 5% would mean 1 in 20 are a dud, which is even more insane

Keep in mind, this happened on QL very rarely, and on UT too. Playing over the internet is always going to have weird things happening, but QC has them happening way too often

The genre died because it was never that popular to begin with.

It's basic market theory. Quake didn't sell nearly as well as Halo. Halo became the standard, everything tries to be like Halo. Cod comes out and sets a new standard, everything tries to be like CoD. Each of these games reached higher and higher sales target. It got to the point that mediocre games like Medal of Honor CoD Ripoff Edition sold more than arena shooters ever did.

Nobody changed, the market just grew, and is it grew it tended towards whatever would bring in bigger and bigger bucks.

There was never any evidence anywhere in existence that something like Quake could be as popular as something like CoD.

I started playing Online FPS with QuakeWorld in 1997. Back in the beginning everyone was a casual noob, and you got to play with a wide assortment of people of various skill levels and video game tastes. Because the original "arena" shooters weren't made with the intention of jerking off people's skill centers. They were just single player FPS assets rearranged in a Vs. Mode format. Aspects like speed and tactical depth were just byproducts of developers experimenting rather than an intricately crafted project to distill the ultimate top-tier professional environment. That's right, long ago arena shooters were about as full of casuals as current shooters are now, and they were better off for it.
I can't imagine going back to those old games now with the direction their audiences have taken, inbreeding every outsider aspect of the community to the point where it's a nightmarish parody of its former self. At least not by myself. And this is the big problem we're facing: word of mouth hype isn't going to work because a scattered trickle of players will just end up facing an unnecessary environment that people like myself were lucky enough to avoid. Your choice is to either play games with restrictive mechanics or games with restrictive communities. The only solution is to try and recreate the environment these shooters had when they were first release, and that requires a mass influx of newcomers that can sustain themselves and make a space that the original online FPS adopters did. And the one thing that can make that a reality is AAA marketing and advertising, something that can only be done by corporations outside of our control.

Already did that, grabbed the resources from the /vr/ doom thread OP, soundtrack is great and I love the gritty look of the game, I had my doubts about the guns and combat from the gameplay I've watched but I was so fucking wrong.

The gunplay and combat is slower than Doom, that's for sure, but the guns feel good to use and the combat has its own dance to it. Doom is like a waltz with anywhere from 5 to 15 partners, Quake is more like a mosh pit with 6 and it's harsh.

Yeah, Quake is definitely a different beast from Doom, and I feel like a lot of people give it a bad rap because they're so used to Doom's mach-10 running speed, simpler but numerous enemies and all-killing super shotgun that they try to play Quake too much like it and get angry and quit. They try to circle strafe everything to death and that fails the first time a Death Knight decides to give chase instead of using his fire wall or they meet a Vore and learn the 'joys' of homing projectiles. Not to say you can't go fast in Quake- given it's the game that fucking invented speedrunning, you can clear whole levels a hell of a lot faster than the devs intended, even just getting around rooms can be so much faster due to the verticality added of an actual 3D engine.

That being said I'm biased as hell because I like Q1 way, way more than Doom and think sprite-based games look like fucking shit nowadays (especially with the average art skill [read: screencap guns and pixelate the edges] of the average Doom wad), but low-poly with a solid art style and great texturework like Quake uses is timeless.

Yeah I can see there's a massive difference from Doom in terms of its combat but I like how this works, Ogres are fucking genius in their design and they're a lot of fun to fight. My only gripe with Quake's gameplay is the axe is super useless, like I get that your starting melee weapons is shit to make the other weapons feel valuable but god damn Id you outdid yourself with making the Axe as unsatisfying as possible to use. Other than that, all of the other guns I've used have been a joy to shoot, the shotguns are definitely not as powerful as their Doom counterparts but they're still reliable workhorses that get the job done well.

When I make weapons for my doom mods, I usually frankensprite stuff out of pre-existing guns made by the community so things don't look like shit. I'm a big stickler for that.

True, but the possibilities of Quake are so, so much more than Doom that it's almost pathetic. The fact you even mention Half-Life is a testament to what can be done with ol' Quake 1 engine/id tech 2, and the best part is that once you start digging around and learning QuakeC, pretty much whatever you make will run in any sourceport or even the original engine, with the maps themselves being the usual hurdle (map size in units or entity count usually). There's no shit-pissing around with seven different languages developed by some German guy to use in a single Doom sourceport to accomplish one thing, no five different tools to add 'things' to a 'lump' (whatever the fuck that means), no having to use hackneyed port-specific bullshit just to make a fucking 3D bridge- you've got your brushes, you've got (a limited version of) C, you've got your .tga textures, and you've got qbsp, vis, and light. Don't need anything more than that, really.

Unless you want to make custom models. That's definitely a big trip-up for people- there's no drawing a sprite in MSPaint/GIMP/Photoshop and calling it a day with Quake, you've gotta learn 3D modeling, UV mapping, good texturing, animating, and then you've gotta make it all comply with Quake's limits and art style.

The axe is primarily used to open doors and hit buttons that don't work by touching them- remember, Quake has no +use key, and some maps can get pretty stingy on ammo (not to mention if you're out of shells/nails the last thing you want is to use rockets on a wall right in front of you). You can also use it against stuff like Knights if you're gutsy, but yeah, it's pretty useless.

The shotguns are weaker than Doom's, but that's because they're all moved down a tier- the single shotgun takes the pistol slot as your midrange hitscan gun (and is INFINITELY more useful), and the double barrel takes the normal shotgun slot (up-close damage dealer that turns to crap at midrange).

Going further in Quake weapon talk, I actually think the Blaster from Quake 2 was pretty okay, it had crap damage fire rate, but it had infinite ammo at least so you could safely poke enemies to death, and playing Quake 1 is definitely giving the hankering to make a little Quake 1 and 2 themed weaponset for Doom in the future. I've always loved how Quake 1 meshes sci fi with gothic medieval shit and it reflects in the arsenal too.

Fuck, I want to see more games like this in the future.

It can and does happen in something chaotic like DM. Some retard feeds the quad to the guy in 2nd or 3rd place 1min away from the end of the map and he gets 6 easy kills with the LG. If you map skill to numbers, 1 to 10, in DM a 7 player can beat a 10 on the scoreboard, because it's a server with a lot of people and there's no way the 10 can control all of them

Then again, if the skill disparity is huge, say a 9 or a 10 amongst a server of 2s and 3s, it can happen that he will completely control the chaos in his favor every single time
