Kratos believed that his sister was the best possible chance for the world to reach peace. After she died he kept following Mithos because he thought he inherited her will.
After he realized Mithos was actually just nuts he had already committed atrocities that he couldn't forgive himself for so he abandoned his humanity for a few thousand years.
At the time the game starts, he and Mithos had already had a massive falling out and he was living on Earth for a human lifetime before he shows up to rescue Lloyd.

Because he his friend married that guys sister and since he brother-in-law turned traitor he felt he kinda had to make-up for it.
Then he realised he had a son and spent the entire latter half of the game putting everything together that would allow said son to kill his boss.
