Sonic Adventure 2 is too variable in quality. Sonic Heroes is a stable mediocre for the entire game. You'll have more fun playing SA2 for sure, even if there are worse parts in it.

Heroes started the "playing as Sonic's friends is bad" meme. Not that people didn't like it in the Adventure games, but this was the game that really brought out the "people only want to play as Sonic" bit. Despite the 2D games handling it fine.
