video game composers are just musicians who couldn't make it in the music industry, just like how video game writers couldn't make it in hollywood.

>>388454073
Pic related is why.
Before the '90s, western popular music was based on the traditional principles of melody, progression, cadence, instrumental precision and harmony. You can see this in the timeless work of bands like the Beatles, the Moody Blues, Yes, ABBA, Fleetwoord Mac etc. Both progressive rock and heavy metal combined aspects of classical music with pop to bridge the two into a fusion that would later define video game music composition.
In the 1980s, the aspect of synthesizers and studio gimmickry along with MTV lowered the expectations of what constituted quality music by distracting the public with shiny technological noises and musicians clad in wacky hairstyles and getups. As a result, a genre known as "alternative rock" was created, where bands such as R.E.M., the Replacements, the Pixies, 10,000 Maniacs, the Stone Roses and so on and so forth stood as a, well, alternative to the mainstream that was being infected with style over substance.
Yet even then, mainstream music still persisted in a standard of musicality even if certain trends were lowering the bar. But as the decade went on, those trends would quickly overstay their welcome, and the public was hungry for something new to satiate them. This was the opening that alternative music had to take the mainstream mantle.
But something went wrong.
That something was Nirvana, a tremendously shitty garage band from Seattle, fronted by a drug-addled loser with not a hint of musical talent. Suddenly, the industry had an idea: use this opportunity to hypnotize the public into thinking an interchangeable zero-talent band devoid of musical value is cool as shit. And it worked. With Nirvana being the new standard, droves of talentless "alternative" bands with no grasp of anything music-related and pop music in the west turned to shit.

>>
>>388456279
Meanwhile, in Japan, the "grunge" trend of non-alternative alternative passed to public by while they held on to more advanced forms of music like metal (real metal, mind you, not the "metal" that plagued America in the form of glam rock), prog rock and classic rock.
This is why there is such a strong difference in the quality of melody and progression between western and Japanese music. Japan still clings to technical composition based in classical theory, while western scores are amelodic "textures" that use tonal gimmickry to hide their lack of musical value similar to the fancy synthesizers of the 80s and the overwrought guitar distortion of the 90s.
If you go back to the early years of gaming, you will see that western games once had a quality of music composition similar to Japan's. But once Nirvana's despicable influence crept from popular music to the rest of the western musical consciousness, the quality of film and music scores in the west followed, as can be seen by the drastic drop following the fourth console generation.

Yeah I'd really like to know too, Song of the Ancients, Wretched Automations and Grandma were definitely Okabe since he has compositional credits for the rearrangements on Automata and Emil seems to Hoashi has he has compositional credits for the rearrangement on Automata but other than that it seems we'll never know.

It tickles my autism when soundtracks aren't documented when there are multiple composers, Square is also really good about it most of the time too. I even own the physical CD for Nier and the credits are nowhere to be found.

My story went Ayumi first, which honestly was a great route and that ending hit hard, made me wanna not fuck it up again, but accidentally got the Kanna route and did that for the second ending.

I then went Ayumi again, and got the good ending. But I was stuck since I had no idea what to do. I checked a guide for Mio's route start and didn't use one after, but Mitsuki was fucking complex as shit. Getting the silver medal and the jewel required a lot of backtracking and just being plain lucky I guess, Kanna's route to get the Hyperstone was similar.

I'm happy the download I had gave me a walkthrough.

Also that fucking Eriko Eroscene came outta nowhere

Ayumi's route was pretty good mostly because I was pretty much related to the main character a lot, so whatever he reacted to I reacted to. Plus it was the first route I took so the ending stuck with me more.

Like seriously, hearing those dripping sounds and the no response made my heart skip a beat, and then seeing the actual scene just made me shocked. Plus it truly wasn't fair for Takuya, he was doing everything right and just didn't have the evidence to prove it, and once Ayumi slapped him I felt bad for him.

I honestly related to Takyua so much. It's a shame I didn't play this game back in 2014 when I discovered it, because if I did I would've been his age just to add onto it. I had an interest in History just like him, I had a dumb sense of humour just like him (the translation was fucking perfect, the humour in that game caught me off guard all the time). Hell, he even commented on a TV being 16;9 in a 4;3 world, and I honestly thought the same damn thing.

In an interesting way, I liked and hated the fact things never went my way. I wanted to go the Mio route first but fell into Ayumi's, then I wanted to do Ayumi again but fell into Kanna's. By my fourth playthrough I wanted to just finish the game at 100%, and I'm at 95% now.

Incidentally, you should give the Saturn OST a listen if you can, it's nicely composed. Wish I could find the Vita/PS4 OST just to compare. Also keep an eye out for that anime in 2018.

Jap composers treat making music for videogames like it is it's own thing, it always has a 'videogamey' feeling to it. Western composers treat it like they're making a score for a Hollywood movie, that's why it sounds generic and uninspired most of the time.

Ah damn, where'd you get them from?

I was lucky enough to find the Yu-No ost online, along with the SUPER SOUNDTRACK which came with it. Super Soundtrack is good, but the original is really great.

Also after looking at some PS4 gameplay, they really ruined the artstyle in a lot of ways. I did like the look of the school hall and the interior of the MC's house, but the coast looked really bad, and the exterior of the house was just awful, and oh man Yukki just looked bad, but Koari looked better. Ayumi looked a bit too young for my liking and the fact she wanted to look "motherly" for Takuya

Soundtrack was nice though, nothing like the original though.

Plus, giving the player a refractor was 4 jewels is ez mode.

They are not singers. Why is this difficult? All songs are music, not all musical pieces are songs.

Notice how the quality of western film and vidya scores took a nosedive around the same time popular music did. These days they're quite literally the symphonic equivalent of Nirvana: basic chords slammed together with zero effort toward building memorable and emotionally engaging melodies or song progressions. Compare the old, timelessly melodic musical compositions of the '30s through the '80s to the unmemorable literally who dreck that came in their wake.

Got them from an anon from /vr/. Don't have the link anymore, sadly. Also, Ayumi was actually supposed to act cutetsy in front of Takuya so he wouldn't look at her as a woman. I'd honestly say the remake got this slightly better than the SEGA Saturn version (the one with voices), since her voice is higher pitched (when in front of Takuya, anyway) and not as motherly-sounding as the SS one. By the way, the "ez mode" you mentioned is in the Saturn version too.

Junya Nakano needs to be in High Tier if only for the fantastic Threads of Fate/Dewprism OST, which is probably the best overall OST in an rpg in the PS era after Chrono Cross.

Oh look, we have a second-year English major. In a cultural context, a full composition is considered a song; whether there's singing or not, silly. Word forms aren't always literal.

Ah shit, I thought it was motherly, guess I read it wrong. She looked much older in the original which I preferred since she looked like a mother, and Takuya had all those weird feelings for her which were understandable when she looked like that. The remake made her look a lot different, almost like a teenager.

I wish I had that ez mode though, I've got all my jewel saves at crucial points, so I only ever have two for each route and one usually gets stuck at a intersection leaving me with none until I get back there, or just go through that intersection until it's all done, meaning I'm actually hurting myself by not having more.

Also, that's fine about the link. I could probably check the archives. I did see a Yu-no thread on there 2 months ago.

Hollywood film scores can be just as melodic and memorable as video game ones, or at least they used to (see: Star Wars, Back to the Future, Conan the Barbarian, Robocop etc.) That it hasn't been like this for a while is leaving vidya soundtracks to follow suit, see >>388469727

/v/ should be fucking prohibited from talking about music. You're a colossal idiot if you think complexity or effort or originality are necessarily correlated to "quality", whatever your definition of it is, or if you evaluate the state of pop music and speak as if you're talking about all music, or if you don't understand that different pieces of music have different purposes. I bet you walk into a club and complain about how the structure is predictable and simple in the music, or you walk into a performance of an experimental extended technique Ligeti piece and complain that it's not captivating enough.
By the way, mr. back in my day, pop music has evolved very little. Fleetwood Mac had the same principles as any pop artist from today. All pop music is and has always been based on defined structure, little ambiguity and tension->resolution. I still hear pop music have verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus structure as it always had, I still hear it resolve to tonal, I still hear it focus on vocals in detriment of instrumentation, as it always has. The problem is on you, not the music (and the fact that you think you're educated on it when you're the average "music today is stinky :(" moron).

>>

It's a cheesy melody, IMO. The bar was to beat beat FF:T soundtrack, and I don't think Suikoden 3 does.
FF:T is more well-rounded and generally beautiful

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs7jIyQR-Gk

There's the 2-disc soundtrack right there. That's over 2 hours of music. Just click around. You'd have to really look to find a single stinker in the whole lot. That's how confident I am about the soundtrack.
Just compare any of these to your Suikoden examples. You should be able to tell how much more complex these tracks are.

If you haven't played FFT, that's even better because you should have a more objective opinion. You should be able to see why someone would appreciate this stuff over the Suikoden tracks. I really like the Suikoden 3 opening track, but the other two fall flat.
>>
>>388473423

Pretty much this. All he was saying was waa waa waa. Why is all pop music I IV V I. Pop music has always been simple. If you want something complex listen to some fucking Debussy's or your local pseudo intellect post tonal music faculty composer.

This is why metal is the superior form of music and, subsequently, why Japanese video game music is superior. Because they use metal (read: real metal, not the nu-metal garbage 'Murrica likes) as an inspiration for their compositions as opposed to pop or modern Nickelback rock. Just listen to the interplay in those classic NES chiptunes. Or how strongly the works of someone like Mitsuda resembles baroque music (aka metal riffs in string orchestra form) instead of the swill that westerners use for inspiration.
