Basically, they've decided to design a car with the world's best engine. They succeeded, the engine in the car is an apex of human achievement, but in so doing, the steering feels loose and the interior is covered in loose cut felt instead of polished leather.
Did the design team succeed in their goal? Absolutely. Does that mean the car is good overall? That's up for debate and personal taste.

Experimentation of your own design. Why do you need 20-30 meals anyhow? Stockpiling food is never needed unless you are bad at the game, and even then it isn't needed.

This is the only one I somewhat agree with. Like most open-world games, the game is afraid of 'empty space' and decides to spread out all the content to fill the entire map. This isn't an argument against the shrines themselves because they ARE still well designed, just short.

BOTW has several instances where things could've been vastly improved. Of course, nintenbros will never admit they exist. This game is good but it isn't as good as nintenbros make it out to be. I can answer all three of these at the same time: the game is all about experimentation. They want you to try all kinds of shit. Try using different weapons, different foods, and going to different areas using different tactics to find the shrines, which generally have different ways of solving them.

Durability and the cooking system both increase the depth of the game. You have to make more decisions in regards to how you're going to play, and the adjustments have an impact on things. Two of the same named dishes might have different properties because of the ingredients chosen.

I actually dislike the shrines but the design decision is clear. Spreading them throughout the world encourages exploration, and lets them set up different themes and design them separately. It fits the game, even if I don't like it.

The only decision I think was a mistake and not just a matter of preference is the weather system. It's cool how in the zora domain it's always raining when you get there and you need to play differently, but in the rest of the world all it means is that I have to waste time waiting for the rain to pass, and that doesn't do anything except slow things down.

The past 2-3 years of gaming have been very mediocre. Only 1-2 titles stood out each year. I'm only on pc right now but there was nothing outstanding, period. Even though I enjoyed BOTW, a lot of you guys overhyped the shit out of it. Zelda has always been among my top game series but I won't let a bias like that get in the way of my judgment.

I like it but I definitely miss the old style dungeons. The divine beasts are pretty boring and short and all have the same design style along with the same palette swap blight bosses.

The entire, baseline concept of the game is free-form, what Nintendo calls "Emergent" gameplay. To basically allow the player to go out and find their own fun, Minecraft style.

Getting into a long dungeon, getting stuck on a puzzle and being unable to do anything else because the game's progression hinges on this one puzzle isn't fun.
If you get stuck in a shrine, you can easily back out and try another one that might be more fun, with zero impact to your enjoyment of the overall game

Did they ever fix that weapon durability garbage or at least introduce an unbreakable weapon? If it wasn't for that shit I would have loved it but as it stood it literally killed it for me.

Zelda is one of my most absolute fucking favorite game franchises of all time, I've been playing it ever since I was a little kid playing "grandpa's gold game" and drawing maps with him on graph paper and BoTW is just a straight up fucking 7/10.

If they were slightly more durable or could be repaired I wouldn't care, but having to go through a pocket of shitty swords to not have to use my good stuff is just a pain in the ass. There is absolutely no excuse why the "legendary" weapons you get from the other heroes couldn't have been unbreakable.

The inherent problem with this argument is that Nintendo can't, or won't, create puzzles that actually make you think, so there was never the risk of getting stuck to begin with. It's understandable, the series is Action-Adventure with Puzzles, not a pure puzzle game, but what really makes my cerebrum hum is why an Action-Adventure series has some of the worst Action combat and a constantly recycled Adventure.
BotW's crutch is that it isn't a puzzle game, but the entire gameplay aside from the horribly rushed and recycled Zelda aspects (I.E. the Main Quest) is just puzzles... but they're not any good. The only other option would be clearing out Bokoblin Camps and exploring Hyrile
hoping there is something interesting around the corner because that's what fuckhuge open world games do: They bait you with the anticipation of your imagination. Hyrule is the blandest, most underdeveloped, lore-less low fantasy world in fictional history.

Naturally, this is an adhd type of game so it can take you days or weeks to get through each. Most people also do the thunderblight first since you'll see a lot of Zora telling you to go meet the prince. Of course, not everyone goes the same way but it's safe to assume that a large majority explores the right side of the map first.

Yeah but were you actually stuck trying to figure it out, or was it the physics just dicking with you. I think I found like 2 golf puzzles and they were pretty straightforward, just took a minute and a return trip because thanks weapon durability. I wasn't really stuck, just annoyed while doing trial and error.
The Constellation puzzle is more in line of what I'm thinking of. It's not much, but it makes you look at it and actually figure it out, instead of being a generic physics puzzle that has one of four solutions (usually spoiled in the title of the Shrine).

In Horizon, like every other open-world game, the landscape is just something you traverse to get to the next waypoint.
