So yes, it was a plothole before the retcon from Super which contradict what the Old Kai said back then, but it's not so bad if you considere that the man is a little senile.

Anyway, Toriyama wanted to fuse Vegeta and Goku like Gotenks, but the idea was stolen by the Toe to make the movie so he used the potaras to make a new fusion. If it was a standard fusion, the time limit would have explained it perfectly.

Problem with that is that he made Gohan too strong and the power creep was too great so he had to use him. In truth, adult Gohan was never going to be as memorable or good as kid Gohan. With kid Gohan you have the role of a child having to grow up fast to help his friends in dire situations, even if he was scared. His rage boosts also work better because kids have less better handle on their emotions. Plus seeing a meek boy turn into a raging monster is a better contrast than dude just becoming a chad.

There's enough info on the game now to put those fears to rest. There are a ton of movement options, and lots of responses to those movement options. You can switch characters mid-combo, there's lots of variety in terms of characters with these new guys, each of the new characters has a pretty well-defined role, etc.

There's depth and lots of it. It's the lack of visual depth that still propagating these fears. The game is certainly beautiful, but many of the characters and stages look very similar, the characters have similar looking moves, and the movement options aren't able to be very visually different.

I would be willing to bet money that it's another Persona 4 Arena / Ultimax thing, anon. Auto-combos that change based on which normal you start with, homogenized inputs to make the game easier for those unfamiliar with fighting games to jump into, a decreased amount of command normals so people don't accidentally get something they didn't want. It's an intentional decision in order to reach a wider audience. It has nothing to do with the actual "depth" of the game, the game will be as deep as they intend to make it within the confines of the systems they've created. Read the manga. It's really easy to see why DB is considered a masterwork by some. Akira Toriyama had some really good technical ability for most of the manga's lifespan. Pacing is usually great, especially in comparison to the anime adaptations. Then you can look into movies if you want, or look for clips of how the anime handled your favorite scenes/fights, etc.

There are some decent Z movies if you want to go back and watch more, even if they aren't canon. After that, you can choose whether to watch Dragonball Super from episode 28 onwards or read the Super manga.

People will argue a lot over the whether the Super anime or manga is better than the other. But personally speaking, I find both to be disappointing in different ways. At least with the manga, you don't have any glaringly bad visual stuff like in the anime. But at the same time, the pacing/story feels pretty bare bones and more like a quick outline of story events that happen in the canon. I myself watch the anime and read the new manga chapters every half year or so, since it only has a monthly release.
