It adds to the meta game by making healers more important kills and its a better solution than just health packs or health regen. But usually requires very little skill on the part of the healer. Most of this applies to tanks too.

I feel that healers are shoe-horned into the game because of their game mechanic. Often times the game has to throw out bullshit like Nano-machines and Christian magic to include a mandatory healing mechanic into the game. Sometimes the game even has to break it's own rules for healing and resurrecting mechanics to build a proper story. Characters who get sick or die in a cut-scene miraculously lose the ability to be healed or rezzed in the name of the story. Sci-fi settings end up having world-saving nano-bots or healing rays that cannot be used outside of combat just so they can include a healing mechanic into the game. No game tries to use more down to earth healing mechanics because it takes too long and they assume no one will question why healing mechanics can't be used in non-combat situations.
