Try Dead Space & Dead Space 2.

It hurts me inside when I see a horror thread and read shitfest like soma, amnesia, slenderman, outlast and other pieces of crap like this? You want horror? The first Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, all Resident Evil until Code Veronica including it, the first 2 Siren, the Fatal Frame series, Alien Isolation, the first 2 Dead Space, another one with Roses in name which I forgot right now for some fucked up reason, the first 4 Silent Hill games. You have a big list anon, just don't fall for the nu-"horror" maymay, you would loose too much.
>>
>>388436502
it's decent
more like a thriller with some jumpscares rather than outright horror
voice acting is great, it looks nice and even has some gameplay to it

Will there ever be a horror game series as visually dense in its design as Silent Hill series (1-3)?

When I'm laying in bed and I'm too spooked to sleep I remind myself that the only reason anything would attack me is for two things: Food, or sex. That's all a monster would want.
There's easier ways to get food, so that leaves a rapist ghoul. I'm into that. The spook washes right away. Be safe out there.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

They really should remake Resident evil 3 and give it the RE1 remake treatment.
Shit would be intense if Nemesis spawned more often and you had to escape from him and hide.
Liked what they did with Crimsonheads in RE1.
Fuckers where annoying even if you pretty much only had to focus on burning the bodies of the ones outside the save rooms in the mainsion.part.

It's a definite possibility but a rapist is much more likely. Animals are driven by those things. That said if a monster hasn't been found yet it's likely very intelligent, so the dolphin thing holds up I suppose. Still, I'm not scared to die. I'm scared of being tortured or some ghost taking my soul to spooky ghost hell, that sort of thing. If something like >>388434273

Depends on what type of horror game you want. Horror isn't just about trying to scare you shitless, it's more of a theme. Either way Darkwood is a recent release which I finding pretty good so far, albeit it can fell slightly repetitive once you're in the late game.

Obviously all the classics are great, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame (not a fan, ghosts don't do it for me, but other people like the series), Dino Crisis, Alone in the Dark. Then there's the more obscure titles, Rule of Rose (great plot and theme, dogshit combat), Obscure 1/2, Haunting Ground, Afriad of Monsters, Cry of Fear etc.

What kind of game you really looking for? Combat? Jump scares? Survival? Walking Sim?

Dead Space is not a scary series. Its a horror themed action shooter, basically re4
>>
>>388444757

The first game at least tries to be sort of a horror game. Its got some good atmosphere and sound design that can make for some tense/uneasy situations.

DS2 was full on action. Coincidentally, the only kinda spoopy part was when you were back on the Ishimura.
>>
>>388443147

>>

>Something about the backgrounds and monsters design that makes it look both repulsive and attractive

You are right this is very intentional. Especially so in the monster designs. Many of the monsters are meant to look gross. The lying figure monster for example has an supernatural fast crawling motion that almost makes it seem insect like. The radio even makes a cracking kind of sound to enhance this effect when it is crawling around on the ground. Making for a spooky and disgusting looking monster design.

>>388444757
1 and 2 had some good horror moments but the thing about these games is that they do a few things that take away from the horror aspect imo and make it more as you said horror themed action.

- The combat is really good.
- The games throw tons and tons of monsters at you which makes it feel very action packed.
- The environments in both of these games are the same through out the game so eventually it loses some appeal when certain areas are too dark/grey looking.
- Some areas in the game look like they were made particularly to fit for gameplay purposes. Which ruins immersion a bit.
- Sometimes the game seems cool as fuck. Which can only hurt a horror game imo.

I mean the games still are tense though and I think they do action horror really well. This is likely why Dead Space 3 flopped. The games were already actiony but probably at the limit before it becomes too action game like. Dead Space 3 basically crosses that line. Which makes it lose the appeal. Similar to how people credit RE4 but not as much for the following games.

Soma is the most depressing game I've ever played desu

That fucking ending man

if you want to go for a classic survival horror vibe, go for White Day

Jump scares aren't scary they're startling. True horror comes from implications and wonder. What exactly do these unknown beings want from you, what are they intending?

no need to, the game is very easy. it's just poorly executed

Barely a horror, only a few jumpscares and even those are overhyped by music. Other than that, atmospheric as fuck and very stylish. A little too heavy on post-processing is all.

I can't recommend Darkwood enough. It has the top-down style that will remind people of 'Hotline Miami' but this game really is incomparable to anything else on the market. It's done horror in a way that is perfect. I've yet to play a game in the last five years which has caused me to pause multiple times or feel a true sense of unease. It absolutely sucks you in and takes you to where it wants you to be. It was created by several dudes who 'were too scared to play most horror games' and 'really don't like jump scares'

Fucking damn shame what happened I've finished every silent hill and this scared me more than any of them

It's okay to be bad, no one is judging you.

you miss the point of my post. it's very easy, just boring to play. very good graphics and design though
>>
>>388448485
Yeah I'm thinking of picking it up just for the atmosphere and rutger hauer

I find the bigger problem with DS1 to be that it relies entirely on scripted jump scares and little else. The only part I found actually scary is the military necromorphs. The Silent Hill games continue to scare me every time I play them, but after playing DS1 once it never scared me again because I knew that every jump was going to be in the same place every time, and there's little to be scared of outside of that.

Why is Mario so fucking boring? You jump over the first mushroom and then just wait for the next one but he never comes. Great design and controls but totally boring game.

40 minutes of TEW 2. Looks slightly more open and the crafting system is a bit more complex, there's a RE3 vibe to it.

Also Laura is showing up in different forms out to get you bad.

I ended up softening to the original with replays so I'm planning on getting this day 1. Just hope they don't paywall the fucking ending again.

Petty insults will do nothing for you. Youreargument falls shortly on your poor choice of how you played the game rather than the design of the game itself. Maybe if you were a bit more bold you'd have a greater time, but alas, you simply don't have the skills to do so.

>I find the bigger problem with DS1 to be that it relies entirely on scripted jump scares and little else.

I think this is due to the games combat system and general level layout. It is a very similar game to Doom 3 actually. Even in its atmosphere. Both games I would say are more action horror themed then survival horror. Even that nu-horror that anons here are talking about is far removed from the action horror that those games go for.

I think an important thing for horror games to have good horror is some of the following:

- Restraint in the amount of jump scares.
- Needs good atmosphere.
- Needs good sound/music

These three I feel are key to good horror and SH pretty much mastered all of that.

fuck man I might Just have to replay dead space, been a few years since Ive played through it
>>
>>388441958
After all these years that game still makes me feel uneasy and nervous, hell I literally feel fear when I play it doesn't matter if I'm swimming in photons or not, they knew how to make a good horror game, and that is it.

Does the rubberbanding alien get annoying?
It looks cool but don't like idea of a stealth game where the enemy decides if it wants to walk over to me and kill me or not
>>
>>388436502
Hated it. Walking simulator, the atmosphere gets old quickly because EVERY attempt at spoop has a scare chord or some sort of loud, abrasive noise attached, story is retarded. I'll probably catch some flack for this, but Rutger's performance wasn't very good.

Soma, Amnesia, and Outlast aren't in the same tier as Slender. Outlast is decent, Amnesia is really good, and Soma is great. Alian Isolation is the best horror game since Silent Hill 2 and a modern masterpiece.
>>
>>388452236
It really is a masterpiece and a great example of pleb filter

If you hate isolation your opinion is worth less than nothing

You know what would make for a really good horror experience?

VR Horror with VR Contacts.

They're secretly installed into your eyes,
then the vidya dev activates them and you will experience visual hallucinations that only you can see, based on your profile. Even if you lied about not being afraid of something, and thinking and believing you are not afraid of something, they would just do Trial & Error stuff to see what you are truly afraid of. Future versions of the VR Horror give you ear and odor mods along with skin mods to truly make you feel fear. That or you die from an infection very slowly and you start seeing actual real non digital hallucinations.

It's a masterpiece but it has pacng issues at the end. The actual content is still great, but there's a whole lot of it which isn't the best thing for horror games which rely on pacing just as much as visuals and audio to keep up a consistent tone. That said I'm not sure anything in the second half deserves to be cut, because it's all good and has a ton of really memorable moment. The length is the only flaw, and it's almost backwards to consider more good content a flaw. For some people it can drag, but I thoroughly enjoyed it beginning to end.

You HAVE to play on at least hard mode, anything under that neuters the alien's AI and ruins the feeling of the game. The AI is tied to difficulty, and it's actually fucking mortifying on hard and above. If you have the chance to play it in VR it's easily the scariest experience you'll ever have in a game. It's super well optimized and is jaw dropping gorgeous, particularly the fire and smoke effects which are bar none the very best in gaming so far.

Overall, fantastic game and the best piece of media from the Alien franchise that's not the original movie. It's a brilliant love letter by fans who truly understood the source material.

>>388453848
Well that's good to hear, Alien was always the only movie in the series I enjoyed anyways.

i beat silent hill 1 on psx. some time ago, probably a week. i didn't feel fear nor creepiness, i didn't even flinch at any moment. but, i had nightmares once i started, i had to beat the school 3 times because of a saving problem.
i still visit that school in my dreams.
its peaceful now.
quiet.
