I like KH1 way more on a conceptual level. It didn't execute every idea perfectly but I hate how KH2 cut so much stuff out. It turned from an action-based JRPG/action-adventure to basically just an action game with EXP. A lot of the charm got drained out. I replayed KH1 a few days ago and there were so many great little details, a lot of love went into that game. You see that a lot with a franchise's first entry, the developers really go all out and have a bit of everything, not everything works out but it has a special quality to it that gets whittled away in the sequels in the name of "streamlining".

It's not a debate. II is by far the better game to play. It lacks in story, writing, cinematography, and characters but more than makes up for in the gameplay, aesthetic, and feeling of adventure.

While KH was indeed better in terms of story and concept, that doesn't make it a good game.

While I respect the opinion of people who find the original's more grounded plot appealing, there is no question when it comes to gameplay. 2, FM in particular, is the highest point of combat in this series. You can meme about mash triangle xdd all you want, no other game in the series gives so many fluid options for approaching combat and customization over how your combos actually play out. I'm not saying the original has bad gameplay. I'm not insulting anybody's beloved Osaka team. But I don't think 2FM will be topped, not even by 3.

First one was better. It was simple but robust in terms of gameplay, blocking, parrying, dodging and parrying all felt good to do and you had to master every skill by the end. KH2 turned it into a QTE fest where you just mashed attack until the triangle button flashed and then you started the cutscene.

The plot was way better too. In KH1 you are a kid with a wooden sword saving his friends from the darkness. It was so pure and visceral that anyone can relate to it. KH2 tried to be dark and edgy and 2deep4u. It went from having the, and there's no better way to put it, simple and clean feeling of being a kid searching for his friends to being an angsty teen who nobody will tell anything. It sucks. Instead of being a hero for a simple and understandable reason like friendship, you are just in some organization and it's just your job. It's impossible to really side with your character because your character is some soulless 9-5 douchebag now and everything is a dream in a dream and nobody will tell you anything and there's no real reason for you to be going out and doing anything. They completely replaced everything good about KH1 with dozens of shitty flat characters who's only appeal is that they're bishie. And instead of having a simple motivation tied to a plot that is understandable while still having secrets to reveal as the game progresses, they just decided to add in as many elements of mystery as possible. Every single character has some different fucking agenda and nobody will tell you anything at all.

In KH1 I wanted to go to the next world because I was excited to find what was there both in terms of a new gameplay challenge but also the hope I might find my friends or a clue towards the plot. In KH2 there might as well have been a beat-em-up style flashing arrow forward because there was no other motivation to see what comes next because it's always going to be just some fuck in a trenchcoat who doesn't tell you anything and then you fight

KH1 level interactivity and exploration with KH2 gameplay, and platforming abilities would be amazing

It's a shame Flowmotion had to exist though, which made stuff like high jump, double jump or glide useless shit, which means you can't experience things like the excitement of finally being able to get that hard to reach chest you saw in the early game anymore

KH2 went too action and focused too much on KH original characters. The plot became way too convoluted by this point, as well. It just didn't feel anything like the original so it felt like a completely different thing.

I wasn't really sure about it but after finishing it I can safely say that (at least out of the ones available on ps4) DDD is the worst game in the series. It took all the problems that BBS had and multipled them by 10, and then got rid of the one fun thing that BBS added.

Like what? I'm pretty sure it's mostly vanilla with no added effects. I kind of remember people talking about the color grading being changed but I don't know if that's true.

When you emulate you can use shader mods, higher aspect ratios, higher field of views, higher resolutions, or remove the ugly depth of field. It's going to look better than it does on PS4. And my fav part about emulating is enabling the turbo mode for KH2 which makes combat faster.

These games are fun but they become a shitshow once you can fly imo, completely ruined it for me.

This sums of my feelings about KH1 perfectly, and why I think CoM holds up well too for the same reasons. Nomura just can't help himself, and continues to cheapen the universe. Now we have like dozens of near gods wielding these amazing powerful keys traveling through time and space. The stakes just feel a lot lower.

In KH1 you see the main character's world and everyone he loves get annihilated. You had a reason to care! I mean at least the gameplay is still fun.

In dream drop distance you start with an ability called "flowmotion" which is if you dodge roll into a wall then you can just fly all over the place and do dumb shit.

It'd be a not-completely-awful movement upgrade if it was tweaked a fair amount and made late game, but in DDD it's awful.
DDD is also the worst kh game handidly.
